QUARTER 2- MODULE 4

4th SUMMATIVE AND PERFORMANCE TASK

EARTH SCIENCE

Sea Floor Spreading Worksheet

TASK 1: Use the figure below to answer the following questions. (Copy the questions in your
paper.)

1. What feature of the ocean floor is shown at A?

The feature on the ocean floor is shown at A is mid-ocean ridge.
2. Describe the process shown occurring at B, and explain what results from this.
The process shown occurring at B is the spreading of the seafloor. This will cause two plates
to move away from one another.
3. What happens to old oceanic crust as new molten material rises from the mantle?
The old oceanic crust will be the one to be subducted soon when a new molten material rises
from the mantle. And the cycle goes on.
4. What process is shown occurring at C, and why does it occur?
This happens when two plates collide at a convergent boundary, and one plate is too buoyant,
this is driven beneath the other plate, back into Earth’s interior.
5. Where would you expect to find the “newest” rock on the ocean floor?
I would expect to find the newest rock on the ocean floor in the mid-ocean ridge because this
is where new molten material will come out.

TASK 2: Answer the following questions: (Copy the questions in your paper.)

1. According to how the seafloor is spreading Pacific Ocean is sinking, what would
happen to the Atlantic Ocean?
The Atlantic Ocean will expand while the Pacific Ocean is shinking. This is because of the
divergent tectonic process.
2. How does seafloor spreading provide evidence of past plate motion?
Seafloor spreading provide evidence of past plate motion because when oceanic diverge,
tensional stress causes fractures to occur in the lithosphere. This causes the plates to move.
