RESEARCH ON FORMULARS USED FOR HERBAL OINTMENT PREPARATION.

FORMULAR 1
Procedure for preparation of ointment base: -
Initially ointment base was prepared by weighing accurately grated hard paraffin
which was placed in evaporating dish on water bath. After melting of hard
paraffin remaining ingredients were added and stirred gently to aid melting and
mixing homogeneously followed by cooling of ointment.

NAME OF INGREDIENT QUANTITY USED

1) Wool fat 1g
2) Cetostearyl alcohol 1g
3) Hard paraffin 1g
4) Yellow paraffin 17g

Procedure for preparation of herbal ointments:

The herbal ointments were prepared by mixing accurately weighed extract
(Salacia oblonga and Curcuma longa) base, using levigation method to prepare a
smooth paste which was 2 to 3 times the weight of the base. The base was
gradually incorporated until a homogeneous ointment was formed. The product
was finally transferred into a suitable container.

FORMULAR 2
Ointment formulation
The medicated formulation of ointment was made based on the standard formula
as described by Paju et al., (2013). As a standard treatment, 20 g betadine
(©Pfizer) 10% ointment were prepared. For preparing medicated ointment, 1 g
(5%), 2 g (10%), and 4 g (20%) of the extract was mixed with 19 g, 18 g and 16 g of
white Vaseline, respectively. All ingredients of the medicated ointment were
mixed in the mortar and stirring constantly until homogenous and form an
ointment preparation. In preparing for the control ointment, 20 g of the base was
taken and treated in the same manner to formulate the medicated ointment,
without the active ingredient. Prior to the mixture, the mortar was heated in the
oven at 500 C for 5-6 minutes.

INGREDIENTS USED: Orange oil, Clove oil, Hard paraffin, Yellow soft paraffin,
Wool fat, Cetostearyl alcohol.
INSTRUMENTS USED: Electronic Balance (Shimadzu, Japan), FTIR (JASCO FTIR

Preparation of ointment by fusion method.
The components were melted in the decreasing order of their melting point. i.e.
the higher melting point substance was melted first, followed by the substances
with next melting point and so on. The medicament (i.e the extract) was then
added slowly in the ingredients and stirred thoroSSughly until the mass cooled
down and homogenous product was formed.
Advantages:
This method will avoid over heating of substances having low melting point.
Preparation of ointment by Trituration method:
This method is applicable in the base or liquid present in small amount. The oil
mixture is taken on an ointment slab and triturated with a small amount of the
base.
