Bienvenue! Welcome to the second edition of Liaisons! You are joining a


community of thousands of students and instructors who, in the first edition,
have found that Liaisons is a great introductory text for taking those first steps
toward communicating in French and also for learning about the fascinating
cultures of France and the Francophone world. What has proven Liaisons so
successful among students? First, and foremost, Liaisons is an intriguing plot-
driven movie. Filmed on location in Quebec and France, this film is a first-rate
production with a stellar cast of famous actors such as Mylène Savoie (also known
for her role as director of the films Exode and Tar and Tea), Guillaume Dolmans
(known for his role in Marie Curie, une femme sur le front; Road to Roland-Garros;
as well as Heineken commercials), and Johanne-Marie Tremblay (from the
Oscar-winning film Les invasions barbares). Students who have seen this film call
Liaisons a mystery-suspense thriller that leaves you hungry for more. We know
you will enjoy watching this film as much as students before you have!
The Liaisons program will help you acquire a solid foundation of the
vocabulary and grammar that beginning-level students need in order to express
themselves well at this level. The activities have been carefully designed so that
you first develop confidence with the new vocabulary and grammar before being
required to produce it; that is to say write or speak it. Besides learning about the
French language and France and other French-speaking cultures, you will also
have the opportunity to get to know your classmates and your instructors better
as well as learn interesting information from them as you engage in the language
practice activities in your book.
As suggested by the title of this book and film, this program contains many
liaisons, or connections and links. Great care has been taken to ensure that the
film and the different features of the book are linked together. As you learn
French with the Liaisons program, you will also become aware of how language
and culture are intricately linked together as well as see the connections that
