Abbreviations

Described in US terminology.

R = row/round
Mr = magic ring
ch = chain
st = stitch
ss = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
* = section to be repeated
Dec = decrease
Inc = increase

Note
It is recommended that you read the extra notes throughout the pattern. There is many
tips and information that will help you produce a finished product most similar to the
picture.
You can hide each starting tail behind your work during crochet. Ends of yarn at the
end of each part you have to sew in and hide inside the part of unicorn with yarn
needle.
Cast on single crochet either from the back or from the front for the same pattern as
in the picture. It's just a detail, but you can achieve a slightly different pattern, see
below.
When casting on from behind, you will achieve a slightly larger size.
HEAD
Use 4,5 mm crochet hook and Dolphin baby.

R1: 7 sc into a Mr (7)

R2: Inc * 7 (14)
R3: (Inc, 1 sc) * 7 (21)
R4: (Inc, 2 sc) * 7 (28)
R5-R7: 28 sc (28)
R8: (Inc, 6 sc) * 4 (32)
R9: (Inc, 7 sc) * 4 (36)
R10: (Inc, 8 sc) * 4 (40)
R11-R16: 40 sc (40)
R17: (Dec, 5 sc) * 5, Dec, 3 sc (34)
R18: (Dec, 4 sc) * 5, Dec, 2 sc (28)
R19: (Dec, 3 sc) * 5, Dec, 1 sc (22)

Place safety eye buttons and stuff the head. Insert the stuffing gradually and shape the
head with your fingers. Do not overfill the head so that it is not too heavy. You can
tell it that when you press both sides of the head with your thumb and the other
finger, the head is still soft, but the shape of the head returns to its original state after
the fingers are removed.

Eyes: place them between eighth and eleventh row, between eyes is eight sc.

Note: count rows from below so it is from 1st round – magic ring.

R20: (Dec, 2 sc) * 5, Dec (16)

R21: (Dec, 1 sc) * 5, 1 sc (11)
R22: Dec * 3 (8)

For the remaining eight stitches use yarn needle for better effect.
Use only front loop during sewing and sew from the outside in and from the inside
out, see below.

Always fill the head with hollow fiber as needed during closing.
SHAPING OF FACE:

Using a needle and a new end of yarn of the same color (can be light thread or cotton
yarn) as the head, make the eye sockets as shown in the picture above.
First insert your needle from the bottom of the neck towards the right eye. Next, you
make one stitch through two to three single crochets (roughly 1 cm) and return to the
neck. Then you insert your needle in another place on the neck and do the same at the
other eye and go back to the neck where you have two ends of the yarn left.
Pull both ends. This will create eye sockets. Then just make a knot and hide both ends
into the unicorn's head.
EMBROIDER OF FACE:

Nostrils

Using a needle and chenille yarn the same color as the unicorn's head, embroider the
nostrils.
Just make a few stitches (five) over one or two single crochets.
Eyes and eyelashes

Use a needle and black thread to embroider the face. Follow the pictures above.

First, embroider a line across the top of the eye, and then three lines above the eye.

When you are done, bring the other end of the black yarn to the first end and make a
simple knot. Then bring both ends down towards the "neck" and cut.
EARS
Use 4,5 mm crochet hook and Dolphin baby yarn.

R1: 7 sc into a Mr (7)

R2: 7 sc (7)
R3: (Inc, 1 sc) * 3, Inc (11)
R4-R5: 11 sc (11)
R6: (Dec, 3 sc) * 2, 1 sc (9)
R7: 8 sc, ss (9)

Note: keep the end of yarn longer if you´ll use it for sewing.

You make the other ear with the same way and sew both ears to the head with the
invisible stitch or your favorite stitch.

Sew the ears around or stitch through both layers of the ear in one row.

The location of the ears is on the seventeenth row, there are five single crochets
between the ears.
BODY
Use 4,5 mm crochet hook and Dolphin baby yarn.

R1: 9 sc into the Mr (9)

R2: Inc * 9 (18)
R3: (Inc, 1 sc) * 9 (27)
R4: (Inc, 2 sc) * 9 (36)
R5: 36 sc (36)
R6: (Inc, 3 sc) * 9 (45)
R7-R14: 45 sc (45)
R15: Dec, 9 sc, Dec, 9 sc, Dec, 9 sc,
Dec, 8 sc, Dec (40)
R16: 40 sc (40)
R17: Dec * 2, 7 sc, Dec, 7 sc, Dec, 7 sc,
Dec, 7 sc, Dec (34)
R18: 34 sc (34)
R19: Dec * 2, 5 sc, Dec * 2, 4 sc, Dec, 5 sc,
Dec * 2, 4 sc, Dec (26)
R20: 26 sc (26)
R21: (Dec, 3 sc) * 5, 1 sc (21)
R22: 21 sc (21)
R23: 20 sc, ss (21)
R24: ch1, 21 sc, ss (21)

You can make 21 sc in last three rounds without the ending of the round and the
starting with chain if you want. If you want to have straight edge follow the pattern.
At the beginning of the round is the belly of the unicorn and so it is the front of the
unicorn.
LEGS

Front legs – use 3,5 mm crochet hook and Dolphin baby yarn.
Back legs – use 4,5 mm crochet hook and Dolphin baby yarn.

R1: 6 sc into the Mr (6)

R2: Inc * 6 (12)
R3: (Inc, 1 sc) * 6 (18)
R4: (Inc, 2 sc) * 6 (24)
R5: 24 sc use only back loop (24)
R6: (Dec, 4 sc) * 3, Dec, 3 sc, ss (20)

Change the color of yarn. In the next row, it's up to you whether to crochet in the
classic way or whether you make the exchange in an invisible way to make it look the
same as in the picture. Invisible color change is described below.

R7: ch1, 20 sc, ss (20)

R8: 20 sc (20)
R9: (Dec, 3 sc) * 4 (16)

For a better effect and flat ends of the hooves, I recommend to put the circle made of
hard fleece. It is inserted into each leg before filling, then fill with hollow fiber.

BACK LEGS
R10-R18: 16 sc (16)
R19: Dec * 8 (8)

FRONT LEGS
R10-R17: 16 sc (16)
R18: Dec * 8 (8)
Sewing the movable legs

Use a skewer or crochet hook to secure the limbs. Then, with a long needle and
preferably cotton thin yarn, you can start sewing the limbs.
You poke roughly in the middle of the upper part of limbs and push the needle
through the body and both legs. Keep the starting tail longer, it will need to be sew
and hide.
Then you go back through both limbs and body and repeat this 3 to 4 times.
Try to make the stitch on the limbs as small as possible, just over one single crochet,
as you can see in the third picture.
You will have a dimple on your limbs. It's alright.
Then pull the two ends that need to be on the same side to make a knot and use the
needle to hide them into the unicorn.

You can find a detailed description here: https://youtu.be/Z6PHLzjidtY

UNICORN HORN

Use 2,5 mm crochet hook and silver yarn called Starleta.

R1: 6 sc into the Mr (6)

R2-Ř3: 6 sc (6)
R4: (Inc, 1 sc) * 3 (9)
R5-R6: 9 sc (9)
R7: (Inc, 2 sc) * 3 (12)
R8-R9: 12 sc (12)
R10: (Inc, 3 sc) * 3 (15)
R11: 15 sc (15)

You can leave the tail of yarn long a use it for sewing.
Place the horn in the middle of the forehead between eyes and ears and sew the horn
to the head around.
MANE

Use the colors you want Dolphin baby yarn and 4.5 mm crochet hook.

You will need strands for the back of the head

for bangs and a tail.

The back of head: R1: ch 28 to ch 32

R2: start in the second ch, 2sc in each chain across
(the number of stitches will be doubled)

Example: R1: ch 28
R2: Inc * 27 (54)

Bangs: R1: ch 15
R2: Inc * 14 (28)

Tail: R1: ch 18
R2: Inc * 17 (34)

Then sew all the strands with thread and needle to the head and on the bum of
unicorn.
Tips
MAGIC RING:

After creating the magic ring, you will make chain one, see the penultimate picture,
and then you can start crocheting single crochet into the magic ring over both threads,
see the last picture. This is way how I make the magic ring and first round. You can
do it with your favorite way.
INVISIBLE DECREASE:

During decrease use just front loops.

Straight insert your hook into next front loop, then insert your hook in next following
front loop, grab the yarn, pull it through both loops. You have two loops on your
hook. Grab the yarn and pull it through both the loops.
INVISIBLE COLOR CHANGE:

An invisible color change will achieve the desired effect as in the picture.
However, you can use the classic color change.
In the invisible way, you will crochet with both colors throughout the row to the end
of the row.
You start by ending the round with a slip stitch with the previous yarn color and
making chain one with the same color.
You insert your hook into the next stitch, grabbing the previous yarn color, but
finishing the single crochet with the new yarn color. You repeat this until the end of
the round, where you join the round with the slip stitch.
It is better to tighten little less all the time, because in the next round you will use
only stitches of the new color, so that it is easy for you to do.
SINGLE CROCHET – GRABBING YARN FROM FRONT OR FROM BACK:

The way you grab a single crochet you achieve the desired pattern.
The picture at the top left uses the front grabbing.
The picture at the top right uses back grabbing. Below the pictures you can see the
location of the hook, whether in front of or behind the yarn.

Remember! If you will use front grabbing you will get always little smaller project
then you use back grabbing.
INVISIBLE STITCH (sewing an individual parts together):

It´s stitch which tighten both parts together firmly and it´s invisible.

Use pins with a large head or stitch markers to holding of both parts together. Then
you can start to sew. It´s better to use double thread or thin cotton yarn than chenille
yarn. You can use also the end of chenille yarn but I recommend you do it only with
Himalaya brand. It´s the best quality and you can be able to sew it together without
problems.

THE FINISHING (THE CLOSING) WITH YARN NEEDLE:

Use a needle to sew and close the hole. It's a nicer way.
So you don't crochet the last 6 to 8 stitches. You cut the yarn and leave the end of
yarn a little longer.
Make a stitch from inside to the outside and then from outside to the inside.
Go through all the loops as shown, but you use just the front loop.
ENDING OF THE YARN:

Just copy single crochets. Insert the needle from the top to the bottom and repeat it
three to four times. Be careful don´t tighten too much or too little. Finally, lead the
end of the yarn there where you will sew the other parts.
