Fact-1: Dr. S. Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1988, in a Telugu middle-


class family in Tiruttani town. He was a brilliant student and won various scholarships
in his life. He attended schools in Tirupati and Vellore.

Fact-2: He received his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Madras’s Christian


College. He is known as one of the most popular philosophers of all time in India.

Fact-3: After completing his degree, he became a professor at Madras Presidency


College and then a professor of Philosophy at the University of Mysore.

Fact-4: He represented the University of Calcutta at the Congress of the Universities


of British Empire in 1962.

Fact-5: He was appointed the Haskell Lecturer in Comparative Religion at the


University of Chicago in 1930.

Fact-6: In 1948, he was elected chairman of UNESCO’s executive board. He was


awarded the highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, in 1954. He was also nominated for
Nobel Prize 27 times.

Fact-7: Teachers’ Day was celebrated in 1962 for the very first time when Dr. S.
Radhakrishnan took over as the president of the nation.

Fact-8: The World International Teachers’ Day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1994
to celebrate the commemoration of the signing of the 1966 International Labor
Organization or United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) recommendation concerning the status of Teachers.

Fact-9: He was selected as the second president of India in 1962 and served the nation
until 1967.

Fact-10: He took his last breaths in Madras on 16 April 1975.
