Stitches/Glossary:
ch - chain
sl st - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
dc - double crochet
tc - triple crochet
< > - make all these stitches into the same next stitch (like an increase)
BLO - back loop only (for the entire round unless otherwise indicated)
invisible sl st - remove your hook and reinsert it into the next stitch from back to front, catch the
working loop around your hook and pull through (see more)
invisible bind off - cut the yarn and pull tail all the way through, skip the next stitch and using a
tapestry needle, thread the yarn under the loops from the following stitch from front to back,
then into the center of the stitch where the tail came out of. Weave the remaining tail in as usual.

Materials & Supplies:

● Worsted weight yarn in white and orange
● 4mm hook
● 5mm hook
● Stitch markers
● Tapestry needles
● Pink fabric paint

Pattern:
In white yarn, with 4mm hook, make the “heart”:
Round 1. 12 dc into magic circle and invisible sl st to join to first dc (12)
Round 2. ch1, <sc, hdc>, <2 dc> x 10 times, <sc, hdc> (24)
Round 3. sc, <hdc, 2 dc>, <2 tc>, <3 tc>, dc x 2 times, hdc x 2 times, sc x 3 times, <2
sc>, sc x 3 times, hdc x 2 times, dc x 2 times, <3 tc>, <2 tc>, <2dc, hdc>, sc,
invisible bind off. (35, bind off counted as one stitch)
In orange yarn, with 5mm hook:
Round 4. In BLO for the entire round: join to the invisble bind off from the previous
round. sl st around and invisible sl st to back loop of first sl st (35)
Mark the underlined sc in the next round as you make them.
Round 5. In BLO for the entire round: ch 4 and tc, dc x 2 times, hdc x 2 times, sc, <2
sc>, sc x 4 times, <2 sc>, sc, hdc, <2 hdc>, hdc, sc x 3 times, hdc, <2 hdc>,
hdc, sc, <2 sc>, sc x 4 times, <2 sc>, sc, hdc x 2 times, <2 dc>, dc (42, ch 4
counted as one stitch)
Do not bind off. In white yarn, with 4mm hook, make the paws:
Round 6. Join to the BLO of the first marked sc from previous round. <ch 3, 8 dc> then
cut the yarn and bind off.
Round 7. Thread the tail from the start of round 6 through the base of each dc from that
round, starting from the last dc, creating a loop. Pull tight to close the hole,
then thread around the now closed hole a few times to secure it before
weaving the rest of the tail in. See photo below on where to thread the tail.
Round 8. Repeat 6-7 on the other marked sc.

In orange yarn, with 5mm hook, make the tail:

This is a modified crocodile stitch, in case my instructions are confusing and you would like
some keywords to google.
● Assuming you hold the hook in your right hand, rotate the work so the heart is facing <3
(Left-handed crocheters, rotate it the other way Ɛ>)
● sl st into the ch space. <ch 3, 3dc, 2hdc> around the chain. See photo below.
● Rotate the work so the heart is facing upwards (♡), and make a sc into the front loop of
the very first sl st in round 4 (the first orange stitch you ever made).
● Rotate the work 90 degrees again, and <2hdc, 4dc> around the post of the tc from round
5.
(For right-handed crocheters, the heart should be Ɛ>, and for left-handed crocheters, the
heart should be <3)

Continuing with the orange yarn we will now finish the coaster:
Round 9. In BLO for the entire round: skip the next two stitches from round 5 (the two
DCs), sl st x 9 times, around the paw sl st x 9 times, skip 5 orange stitches
including the one the paw is attached to, sl st x 7 times, around the paw sl st
x 9 times, skip 5 orange stitches, sl st x 9 times, inserting hook into the ch 3
of the tail and the back loop of the stitch underneath, sl st x 2 times, sl st into
the chain space, inserting hook into the top dc of the tail and the back loop of
the stitch underneath, sl st x 2 times, invisible bind off.
To finish the work:
● Weave one of the orange tails alternately between both sides of the tail to close the hole.
See photo above.
● Using fabric paint, paint on paw pads.
