QA/QC Processes for Steel Fabrication and Assembling

1. Quality Control Plans (QCP)

 Purpose: Provide an overarching strategy for achieving quality objectives throughout the
fabrication and assembly processes.
 Contents: Outline procedures, responsibilities, inspection points, acceptance criteria, and
documentation requirements.

2. Inspection and Test Plans (ITP)

 Purpose: Detail specific inspection and testing activities at various stages of fabrication
and assembly.
 Contents: Identify inspection points, methods, acceptance criteria, and responsible
parties for each phase of production.

3. Material Test Certificates (MTC)

 Purpose: Certify the quality and properties of materials used in fabrication and assembly.
 Contents: Details material composition, mechanical properties, and compliance with
relevant standards.

4. Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Welder Qualification Records

(WQR)

 Purpose: Ensure welding procedures and personnel qualifications meet specified

standards.
 Contents: Define welding parameters, prequalification tests, and records of welder
qualifications.

5. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Reports

 Purpose: Document results of NDT methods (e.g., UT, RT, MT, PT) to detect defects
without damaging the material.
 Contents: Inspection results, defect location, size, type, evaluation against acceptance
criteria.

6. Dimensional Inspection Reports

 Purpose: Verify the accuracy of fabricated components' dimensions.

 Contents: Actual measurements, tolerance limits, inspection methods, compliance with
drawings.
7. Surface Preparation and Coating Inspection Reports

 Purpose: Ensure proper surface preparation and coating application.

 Contents: Surface cleanliness, profile measurements, coating thickness, adhesion tests,
compliance with coating specifications.

8. Assembly Procedures and Work Instructions

 Purpose: Provide step-by-step instructions for assembling components or structures.

 Contents: Sequence of assembly, torque requirements, fastening methods, alignment
procedures.

9. Packing and Shipping Documentation

 Purpose: Ensure proper handling and transportation of fabricated and assembled

components.
 Contents: Packing lists, shipping instructions, handling precautions, identification labels.

10. Quality Records and Logbooks

 Purpose: Maintain a comprehensive record of all QA/QC activities, inspections, tests,

and corrective actions.
 Contents: Inspection logs, quality control checklists, non-conformance reports, audit
findings, and reviews.

Importance of Paperwork in QA/QC

 Documentation: Provides evidence of compliance with specifications, standards, and

contractual requirements.
 Traceability: Enables traceability of materials, processes, and inspections throughout the
fabrication and assembly processes.
 Quality Assurance: Facilitates systematic monitoring, evaluation, and improvement of
quality control processes.
 Risk Management: Helps identify, mitigate, and address quality issues promptly to
prevent rework or product failures.

In summary, proper paperwork and documentation in QA/QC processes for steel fabrication and
assembling are essential for ensuring consistent quality, meeting customer expectations, and
complying with regulatory requirements. They serve as critical tools for managing quality
throughout the production lifecycle and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
