Batanceven if you live in tighter
quarters, you can surround
yourself with beautiful and
inviting modern farmhouse
elements. For proof, look
no further than this big-
city condo, once home
to dark, boxy rooms and
seemingly endless swaths
of brown. The new owner.
Nick Prior, and his designer, interior architect
‘Amelie von Celsing, wanted an updated vibe
for his place that also felt a little unexpected,
“I like to throw a few punches." von
Celsing says with a laugh. “I really
like to push beyond the obvious.”
She did just that with her redesign,
guided by Nick’s aesthetic. “He wanted
that clean, monochrome style that is so
typical of my roots,” says von Celsing, a
native of Sweden. “Even so, | knew there
was a chance to be more daring.
First, though, came some floor plan
fixes. “I got rid of the walls dividing the
kitchen and living room to open everything
up." von Celsing says. “That let in the
light. i's amazing how tearing down walls
completely changes the feel of a place.”
Then, after nine months of planning
and renovations, von Celsing arrived at

‘and not adverse to taking risks,” she
says. "So I really encouraged him to think
beyond the safer design options.”
‘That permission opened the door to
a design fusion that melds signature
elements of contemporary, modern
farmhouse, and Scandinavian styles.
Von Celsing threw her initial punch in
the kitchen. “Id seen similar kitchen units
with a washed wood finish,” she says,
‘and | wanted to try my own version.”
Getting this farmhouse favorite look,
though, wasn't easy. “I went through
about 15 samples before deciding on
the right one," von Celsing says. *The
finish is put together with layer after
layer of different patinas, then rubbed
down to create a textured appearance.
“And because | don't like samey-
samey, | paired these units with a
completely different style that has amazing
hammered-metal doors,” she says. “I
was so excited when it was completed.
It looked better than I'd imagined!"
‘The mix of wood species throughout the
home finds a suitable canvas in a modern
farmhouse design staple: white walls,

“I go to the marble warehouse and
buy incredible slabs of stone and marble

“They look amazing and cost half the
price of some of the store versions.”
Because smart budgeting was a priority
with this apartment, so von Celsing had to
decide where it was worth spending more
‘and where she needed to be creative, From
the custom table in the dining nook to the
‘one-of-a-kind headboard in the primary
bedroom, von Celsing’s success stories stand
out. They help create an inviting home,
“The wonderful thing about a custom piece
is that it's yours and yours only. And these
pieces are easier to create than you think-if
you have an idea or a photo reference, there's,
usually someone who can make it for you.”
The custom and budget-fiendly
selections all come together to create an
Inviting place. "Nick wanted somewhere
he could relax after a hard day's work,”
von Celsing says. “But the apartment
also needed a level of sophistication for
entertaining. A tricky combination, but

Emma's passions: playing up color, mixing

kitchen, Emma didn't want a one-size-

cabinet boxes from a German company
that she fronted with smoked-oak cabinet

look beautiful but work effectively, too.
Upstairs, Emma went for a textural
approach. The bathroom flooring features

homage to one of her favorite ilustrators,
John Rombola. Emma had one of his drawings

‘embroidery designer create a frame around it.
With a love for reinventing items, Emma
‘gave her sofa a new look, too. "it was

While the city is relatively

a tiny oasis that needed more than a little
help, she jumped at the chance to renovate.

The Idea of building a box with a sleeping

her with a little parental help: “I designed

‘as much living space as possible.”
While it lives large, make no mistake—
this apartment is small by any measure. In
fact, the bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom
only take up 118 square feet. “It helps
that natural light pours in through the
back window and brightens up the whole
house throughout the day,” Emma says.
Creating usable storage was another
challenge, but Emma was determined to
keep the interlor as clutter-free as possible.

BRITISH INTERIOR DESIGNER SUZY HOODLESS’ IMAGINATIVE USE OF
COLOR HAS TRANSFORMED HER TERRACE HOME FROM BLEAK TO CHIC.

62) SMALL SPACE DECORlluring hues is what
London-based
Interior designer
Suzy Hoodiess
dreamed of for her
‘own home. "Even
on a bright, sunny
day, the rooms can
be quite dark, so it
really needed color?
Suzy says about the renovation she and
her husband Erskine Berry and their three
children, Misty, Myla, and Arki undertook
for their west London home, Colors like
cobalt blue and dramatic red chime with
‘dusky pink and pale gray to punctuate the
interior of their Victorian-era terrace house.
Maybe It's because of the kids, or maybe
it's just that 'm attracted to bright colors,"
Suzy says, but bold color choices are a part
of her signature style that she describes as
unique, confident, and full of character. Suzy
has applied her look to her collaborations
with the likes of Osborne & Little and The Rug
Company, along with a variety of other clients.
‘When it came time to tackle her own ‘tall,
thin home," as she describes it, Suzy made
it her laboratory. *All the biggest mistakes
I've made have been for myself Suzy says.
"For a client, have come up with the
most precise plan and installed everything
in days. Here, it's taken seven years."
After buying the four-story home, Suzy was
Immediately drawn to its spaces: The ground
floor with its double-aspect living room that
features windows on three sides and a shared
kitchen-dining space. A study, utility room,
primary bedroom, and bathroom fil out the
first floor. Two bedrooms and a bathroom
take up the second floor, with a bedroom on
the third. "I just wanted to create a sociable
home that would work for a family, but could
also be shut down at night, and not filed
with billions of plastic toys everywhere.”
‘Suzy started by tearing out all of the MDF,
a legacy of a previous owner's DIY over-
‘enthusiasm. "My mother was horrified as 1
ripped out every cupboerd,” Suzy says. "She
said, "You're going to need lots of storage’
| said, 'Not this kind of storage.” Suzy redid
the second-floor bathroom, installing a bath
‘and tiling the room in a glossy turquoise.
Itis now an ideal bathroom for the kids.
‘Then the couple decided to completely
transform the ground floor. They opened up
the space by removing some walls and lots of
doors, and divided the double-aspect ground:
floor room to create a cozy but proper living
room at the front and a sitting room/playroom
in the middle. They also knocked out a lean-to
at the back of the house to gain more space.
By lowering the kitchen level below the living
and sitting room, they created one open
kitchen and dining space. "It has made all the
difference to the way we live,” Suzy says.
‘This redesign also gave Suzy the space
to accommodate a table big enough to
seat her vintage Hans Wegner Wishbone
chairs, bought years ago in Sweden.
“They've been the bane of my life, because
10 of them is quite a lot, but they're really
wide, deep, and comfortable,” she says.
‘Suzy believes color can have impact
whether its bright or muted. She selected

she selected a soothing combination of pink
and gray with a shot of deep rouge to create
‘a cacooning space, "Color is an easy way
to create a dramatic effect," Suzy says.
Against this backdrop, classic designer
pleces collected over many years lend an
‘eclectic, personal touch. “I's perhaps lots of
things that shouldn't really go together, but
somehow they do.” Suzy says. "I just follow
my instinct and do my own thing, To me, it

Creating visual separations between the

space feel bigger. “One of our main
goals was also to take full advantage
of the space by creating sectors that
are integrated and, at the same time,
distinct in their uses,” Victorelll says.
To that end, Victorelli envisioned a
porticolike feature to help separate the entry
from the kitchen and living room. She painted
an archway a contrasting green and built a
bookcase into the “portico” to add storage
and create a spot to showcase prized finds.
Victoralli also created a multifunctional piece
of furniture that works hard as a wardrobe
and 360-degree television support, while
also acting as a much-needed privacy
partition between the bedroom and living
room. And those essential closets? The
architect installed white wardrobes all
around the couple's bed, which not only
provide plenty of room for clothes, they
also create a stylish cocoon for their bed

‘The couple kept their art choices
throughout the apartment intentional by
selecting meaningful pieces along with
rightsize furnishings that reflected their
tastes without overpowering their spaces.
Victorelli says the highlight of the living
area is the mural handmade by a duo of
artists called Land, which gives the space
prominence and personality, while bringing
the entire home to life. In just 344 square

of a decent one-bedroom flat in London,”
she says.
After looking around, she found a
'539-square-foot apartment that she liked.
Even so, moving in was going to be a
bit of a compromise, as it came with no
outside space. “But it’s on the top floor,
so it has lots of natural ight streaming
through, and the layout works well, so
| decided to go for i.” Hannah says.

SMALL SPACE DECOR 185Moving from a two-bedroom house to a
‘much smaller flat also meant that personal
possessions had to be streamlined, “I was so
sad to part with same things, but since that
initial purge, I've operated a strict one-in-one~
ut policy with my furniture and accessories,
she says. Although Hannah didn’t enter the
home with an explicit plan on how to make
it fee! like her own, Hannah knew she was
{going to tap into her interior design skills
to create a bold statement that was a true
expression of her personal style. “With it
being such a small space, I had to be extra
clever with my design choices,” she notes.
Hannah initially replaced the carpet
with herringbone engineered oak. From
there it was a gradual process of injecting
fun flourishes into the space. The first
big change was adding the stripes to
the open-plan kitchen-living space, “It
was a bold move, but I've always loved a
monochrome palette and graphic patterns,
0 it felt fairy intuitive." she says.
Keeping the open-plan living space light
‘and bright was important, but in the bedroom,
Hannan wanted to create a different
aesthetic. “The ceilings are high, and it's
south facing, so I knew the room could take
‘a dark color.” she says. “I wanted it to feel
cozy—like it was a little nest." Hannah initially
painted the walls a soft, almost-black shade
but was then inspired to try color blocking
uring the Covid pandemic. “It was most
unlike me. It usually takes me a long time
to make decisions, and | like to visualize my
ideas on digital mood boards," she says.

bold geometric shapes.” The orange circle
‘on the ceiling came first, closely followed by
the rectangle behind the bed, and the yellow
semicircle on the opposite wall. “I was initially
‘worried that it would look a bit bonkers, but as
soon as | started painting | knew the striking
contrast of the colors worked,” Hannah says,
‘The small bathroom was the last room to
get the daring paint treatment. "I'd already
covered the tiles with special white tile
paint, but the pink design came after a trip
to Marrakesh, Morocco, where | was inspired
by some amazing citcle-patterned tiles in
the place we were staying in,” she says
Hannab likes how it all came together. “As
I ried to do everything in a cost-effective
way, sometimes tasks have been harder and
taken longer. But there's something special
about doing the work yourself. l can truly
look around my home and say, I did this!"*
