Intersemiotic Translation and Recontextualization

As part of your 12th week assessment you are asked to do the following:

In groups of 3/4, choose a text (such as a scene from a play / a short story/ a poem / a video / a
documentary…etc.) and translate it into Arabic/English. Use Linell’s (1998) recontextualization
levels to do the following:

1. Change the audience you are addressing in the target language (adult to children /
children to adult ..etc.).
2. Through Intersemiotic Translation change the mode you are using (from written to
video / from written to audio + music / from film to written…etc.). Using semiotic
complementation is also allowed.
3. Prepare a 10-minute presentation on your topic to be given in Week 13.
4. You can use the following table to help you during your work and presentation.

In pairs, choose a text that is already recontextualized through intersemiotic intelerlingual


translation (a novel to a film / a short story to a play / a short story to a poem…etc.) and do the
following:

1. Analyze the translation in terms of Linell’s (1998) recontextualization levels (Medial /


Linguistic / Cultural / Generic / Ideological)
2. Suggest your own translations when necessary.
3. Prepare a 10-minute presentation on your topic to be given in Week 13.
4. You can use the following table to help you during your work and presentation.
