COOLING SYSTEM EXPANSION TANK SIZING

Vt = Vs [(v2 / v1)-1] - 3aDt

1- (P1 / P2)

Where Vt: volume of expansion tank Req. m3

Vs: volume of water in system 26.00 m3
t1: lower temperature 6.66 C
t2: higher temperature 38.80 C
P1: pressure at lower temperature 1291.00 kpa
P2: pressure at higher temperature 651.00 kpa
v1: specific volume of water at lower temperature 0.00100 m3/kg
v2: specific volume of water at higher temperature 0.00101 m3/kg
a: linear coefficient of thermal expansion (Steel) 0.0000117 m/m.K
Dt = t2-t1 32.14 K

a. Estimated System Volume Vs:

V = System Capacity (KW) x 0.014 x 1.32

= 1758*0.014*1.32 = 32.50 m3

Vs = V-20% = 26.00 m3
Note: The contractor shall calculate the exact water volume in the system based on final shop drawing layout

b. Pressure at lower temperature P1:

P1 = P(atm) + P(Static) + 30 (for positive pressure at top
of building)

P(atm): Atmospheric Pressure (Kpa) 101.00 Kpa

P(Static) = Building Height*10
Building Height 116.00 m

= 101 + 116*10 + 30 = 1291.00 kpa

c. Pressure at higher temperature P2:

P2 = P(atm) + P(relief valve)

= 101 + (Pump pressure+50) = 101+500+50 = 651.00 kpa

Vt = = 0.52 m3

Expansion Tank Volume = 1100.00 Liter
