Lesson Outline
Introducing the Constitution (10 minutes)
• Begin by asking students what comes to their mind when they hear the word
'Constitution'.
• Facilitate a brief brainstorming session, noting down student responses on the board.
• Define 'Constitution' as a set of fundamental principles or established precedents
according to which a state or other organization is governed.
Why India Needed a Constitution (10 minutes)
• Show pictures related to India's struggle for independence.
• Initiate a discussion on the challenges faced pre-independence and the need for a
unified and independent nation.
• Explain that the Constitution was essential to ensure rights, establish a system of
governance, and define the values of the new nation.
Key Features of the Indian Constitution (15 minutes)
• Introduce the Indian Constitution as the longest written constitution globally.
• Discuss key features: Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic, Republic.
• Explain each feature with examples. For instance, 'Secular' means India doesn't have a
state religion, and everyone is free to practice their faith.
