SECTION A:
ANSWER BOTH QUESTIONS (QUESTION 1 AND QUESTION 2)

Question 1 (Marks: 30)

The table below indicates the number of years of experience of a sample of salespeople who work
for Babble Pty Ltd. and their corresponding number of sales over the last month.

Years of Experience (x) Number of Sales (y)

13 21
7 17
2 8
6 14
8 15
5 11

Q.1.1 By completing the table below, and then applying the relevant formulae, (15)
determine the line of best fit for this bivariate data set.

[NOTE: Do NOT change the units for the variables. No marks will be awarded if the
table is not completed]

x y x2 xy

Σx = Σy = Σx2 = Σxy =

Q.1.2 Estimate the number of sales that would have been made in a month by a (5)
salesperson who has 11 years of experience.

Q.1.3 Using your calculator, determine the coefficient of correlation for the data set. (5)
Interpret your answer.

Q.1.4 Compute the coefficient of determination for the data set. Interpret your answer. (5)

NOTE:

ALL FINAL PROBABILITY ANSWERS IN QUESTION 2 SHOULD BE GIVEN AS PERCENTAGES TO TWO

DECIMAL PLACES, UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE.

Question 2 (Marks: 30)

Q.2.1 A bag contains 12 red and 11 green marbles. You are asked to select two marbles from
the bag. The first marble selected will not be placed back into the bag.
Q.2.1.1 Construct a probability tree to indicate the various possible outcomes (7)
and their probabilities (as fractions).
Q.2.1.2 What is the probability that the two selected marbles will be different (3)
colours?

Q.2.2 The following contingency table gives the results of a sample survey of South African
male and female respondents with regard to their preferred brand of sports gear:

PREFERRED BRAND OF SPORTS GEAR

Maxed Nike Adidas TOTAL
No. of Females 40 110 50 200
No. of Males 65 115 70 250
TOTAL 105 225 120 450

Q.2.2.1 What is the probability of randomly selecting a respondent from the (2)
sample who prefers Nike?
Q.2.2.2 What is the probability of randomly selecting a respondent from the (4)
sample who is not male?
Q.2.2.3 What is the probability of randomly selecting a respondent who is (2)
female and prefers Adidas?
Q.2.2.4 What is the probability of selecting a respondent who is male, given (2)
that they prefer Maxed?

Q.2.3 The probability that a randomly selected employee of Company Y is male is 0.80. (5)
The probability that an employee of the same company works in the Human
Resources department, given that the employee is male, is 0.50. What is the
probability that a randomly selected employee of the company will be male and
will work in the Human Resources department?

Q.2.4 There are nine teams participating in a pub quiz. What is the probability of (5)
correctly predicting the top four teams at the end of the competition, in the
correct order? Give your final answer as a fraction in its simplest form.

SECTION B:
ANSWER QUESTION 3 OR QUESTION 4, BUT NOT BOTH.

Question 3 (Marks: 40)

The following data set indicates the number of leather bags sold per week by a local company,
over a random sample of eleven weeks.

45 50 52 54 55 56 58 58 61 66 68

Q.3.1 Calculate the following, using the appropriate formulae and/or methods:
Q.3.1.1 The mean. Interpret your answer. (4)

Q.3.1.3 The median. Interpret your answer. (4)
Q.3.1.4 The first quartile. Interpret your answer. (4)
Q.3.1.5 The 80th percentile. Interpret your answer. (5)
Q.3.1.6 The standard deviation. (5)

[NOTE: The relevant formula must be used. No marks will be awarded if

the answer is simply obtained directly from a calculator]
Q.3.1.7 What is the coefficient of variation for this data set? (3)

Q.3.2 A sample of consumers were asked which brand of energy drink they prefer. The (8)
results regarding the popularity of the drinks are given in the following table.

Brand of Energy Drink Number of Consumers

Monster 20
Red Bull 20
Switch 10
TOTAL 50

Draw a bar chart to graphically illustrate the results given in the table.

Question 4 (Marks: 40)

The following table indicates the number of customers per week who bought a smart watch from
a sports accessories store, over a random sample of 70 weeks.

Number of Customers Number of Weeks

0 -< 10 5
10 -< 20 18
20 -< 30 33
30 -< 40 11
40 -< 50 3
n = 70

Q.4.2 The following data set indicates the number of emergency telephone calls (10)
received per day by a local police station over a random sample of twenty days:

32 28 19 29 21
25 27 24 30 25
20 21 31 29 22

Construct a grouped frequency distribution table for this data set. Your table
should include columns with descriptive headings, indicating the frequency count
values (f) and the percentage frequencies (% f) for each class. The total for each of
the latter columns should also be included. Use the classes 10 -< 15; 15 -< 20; and
so on.
