DISCUSSION
A poem is a composition composed of rhythmic lines. It has different elements. However, it is
not necessary to have all these elements in every poem. For instance, some poets choose to write
poems that lack rhymes.
The Elements of a Poem
1. Stanza- It is fixed number of lines forming a single unit of poem. A poem is usually composed
of many stanzas that have equal number of lines. A poem may only have two lines, while
others can have as much as three, four, five, six, or fourteen lines.
2. Rhyme- is the similarity of sounds usually at the end of two or more lines.
3. Rhythm- is achieved by uniform number of syllables and the pattern of accented and
unaccented syllables in each line.
4. Alliteration- is a repetition of a consonant or vowel sound in the initial stressed syllables of a
series of words or phrases in close succession.
5. Simile- is a direct comparison between two unlike concepts, people, or objects using the
words’’ like’’, ‘’ as’’, ‘’than’’ or ‘’resembles’’.
6. Metaphor- is an indirect comparison made between two completely unrelated things. It does
not use’ ’like’’, ‘’as’’, ‘’than’’, or’’ resembles’’.
7. Imagery- is figuratively creating a vivid picture in the mind of the reader with words. These
words appeal to the sense of sight, smell, taste, feeling, and hearing.
8. Symbolism- is a practice or method of using an object to represent an abstract or intangible
concept or idea.
