• 230/240 V, 50/60 Hz: 1800 VA

3-3-2. Grounding

The VF-500 power cable is a 3-line type cable including a grounding wire. Prepare either
of the following appropriate outlets with ground on the table, and securely ground the
power cable. Select an outlet with ground according to the power supply voltage in your
area. If you cannot prepare the following outlet with ground, prepare a grounded outlet
and a grounded cable that satisfy the rating and unit power consumption conditions.
• 100/115 V Rating: 125 VAC, 15 A (JIS C 8303)
• 230/240 V Rating: 250 VAC, 16 A (SE type)

CAUTION Earth terminal

Check that earth terminal is properly connected to prevent electric shock.

3-5. Supply Gas Lines

3-5-1. Line Preparation

Prepare the gas lines for the VF-500 unit as follows.

• Prepare Ar and O2 gas supply lines up to the center of the table.
• Use a metal line with an external diameter of φ3 to connect to the unit.
• When connecting a line to the unit, keep about 1 m margin at the end.

CAUTION Gases to use

Make adjustment so that the pressure of Ar gas is equal to that of O2 gas.
Adjust the setting pressure within the range of 0.3±0.1 MPa.
If the setting pressure is out of the range of 0.3±0.1 MPa, the unit may not
operate correctly or it may break.
Prepare Ar gas with a purity of 99.98% or greater and O2 gas with a purity
of 99.7% or greater.
Prepare gas with a cylinder of 7 m3 or more capacity.

POINT Impurities from lines

After connecting new lines or changing or reconnecting lines, large
volumes of impurities may get into them. Thoroughly purge them before
using the unit.

POINT Gas grades

Impurities in general-grade gas may affect measurement because the
container is used repeatedly and the history of gas is left therein. This
problem can be avoided by using high-purity, high-grade gas in a dedicated
container. However, doing so does not eliminate impurities.

5-8. Incomplete Combustion Occurred

When oxygen becomes insufficient due to rapid combustion or the combustion

temperature is insufficient, incomplete combustion occurs and soot is generated. Soot
adheres to the sample gas path and, depending on the composition of the sample, may
become adhesive. Conduct maintenance by referring to the daily and periodical
inspection items in “Maintenance and Inspection”. This section describes the
maintenance of the combustion tube. When there is no improvement even by taking the
countermeasures or the combustion tube is devitrified severely, change it with a new one.

Check of the Condition of the Combustion Tube Outlet

Visually check combustion tube outlet for soot contamination caused by incomplete
combustion. If it is contaminated, remove the combustion tube from the electric furnace,
remove quartz wool and filler, and wash the combustion tube. To wash combustion tube,
refer to “7-2. Periodical Inspection and Maintenance”.

Gas Leakage Check

Connect the ball joint of a flow meter for gas leak check to the combustion tube outlet and
check that the preset gas flow agrees with the indicated value of the flow meter. For
details on gas leakage check, refer to the operation manual.

The details of each periodical inspection item and maintenance are as follows.

VF-500 (NSX-5000)
Maintenance and Inspection 7-3

Check of the Appearance of the Unit

Visually check the unit for contamination and dust every two weeks. If there is
contamination and dust, clean the unit.

POINT Unit cleaning

When cleaning the unit, do not use organic solvents.
Doing so may cause the coating of the unit to peel off.

Check of the Condition of Quartz Wool and Filler in the Combustion Tube

Visually check the condition of quartz wool and filler in the combustion tube every three
to four weeks. If there is a residue on the quartz wool in the inner tube or the quartz wool
has shrunken or been powderized, change it with new quartz wool. However, the
condition check needs to be conducted more frequently when alkaline samples or
samples containing metals are measured. If the condition of the filler has changed,
change or renew it. For the change of the quartz wool and filler, refer to the operation
manual. If any abnormalities are found in the combustion tube during visual check, wash
or change the combustion tube.

Check of the Condition of the Combustion Tube

Visually check the condition of the combustion tube every month. However, the condition
check needs to be conducted more frequently when alkaline samples or samples
containing metals are measured, because they facilitate devitrification of the combustion
tube. When the combustion tube is contaminated, wash it as follows.

(1) Remove the quartz wool and filler, and wash and brush the combustion tube with a
brush or the like and neutral detergent. If the contamination cannot be removed with
a brush, immerse it in washing solution overnight or longer, and then wash it again.

(2) After washing, rinse the combustion tube thoroughly with pure water and dry it
before use.

When the combustion tube is devitrified and mechanical strength is determined to be low,
change the combustion tube with a new one immediately. For the change method, refer
to “3-6. Combustion Tube Setting”.

VF-500 (NSX-5000)
7-4 Maintenance and Inspection

CAUTION Combustion tube devitrification

When a combustion tube is devitrified, its mechanical strength decreases
and it may break. As a result, accidents or injuries may be caused.
The term “devitrification” refers to a condition where the combustion tube
color has turned white. When a combustion tube is devitrified, especially
when fine cracks are in the devitrified part, the mechanical strength is low.
Change it immediately.

Cleaning of Air Vents

Clean the punching part of the front door of the unit and the area around the air vents of
the rear fan with a cleaner every three months. If the unit continues to be used with dust
adhered around the air vents of the unit, the cooling time of the electric furnace may
become longer or temperature rise around the electric furnace may cause a system down.
When the unit in a dusty environment, cleaning needs to be conducted more often.

Check of Gas Flow Indication

Check that Ar and O2 gas flow indications are correct every year. Check that the flow
indication agrees with the value of the flow meter.

(1) Connect the ball joint of the combustion tube outlet to the flow meter for gas leak
check.

(2) Set a gas flow of 100 mL/min for Ar and 300 mL/min for O2, and check that the flow
meter for gas leak check indicates 400±40 mL/min.

Change of Gas Purification Filters

Change the gas purification filters with new ones every year. For the change method,
refer to “3-5-2. Line Connection”.

VF-500 (NSX-5000)
Maintenance and Inspection 7-5

Check of the Electric Furnace Temperature

Check every year that the electric furnace temperature displayed on the PC is correct.
Insert a thermometer into the combustion tube center by the following procedure. Check
that the electric furnace temperature displayed on the PC is within the range.

(1) Set a commercial thermometer (R-type thermocouple) into the combustion tube
center by referring to “Fig. 7-1. Thermometer Setting”. Always use a calibrated
thermometer and a calibrated display. Set the thermometer at a center position,
viewed either from the direction of the depth of the electric furnace or the direction
of the radius of the combustion tube. To prevent heat from escaping through the
inlet of the electric furnace, implement heat insulation at the electric furnace inlet.

Insertion direction of
the thermometer

Heat insulation

Fig. 7-1. Thermometer Setting

(2) Create a new method and schedule, and set the inlet and outlet temperatures of the
electric furnace to 900 degrees Celsius using a parameter setting.

(3) Turn on the electric furnace, and raise its temperature.

(4) Check the temperature indicated by the thermometer 30 minutes after the inlet and
outlet temperatures displayed in the PC window reaches 900 degrees Celsius. If the
thermometer indicates a temperature within 900±50 degrees Celsius, then the
indication is normal. If the temperature is out of the range, contact our local
distributor.

Overall Inspection

Contact our local distributor. They determine inspection items and others according to the
condition of the unit and the use frequency.
