STC-500L (NSX-5000)
8 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

About the Cooling Mode

When using the STC-500L cooling mode, the performance and cautions are as follows.

(1) Temperature control system

Temperature is controlled by the Peltier element and controllable temperature
depends on room temperature. Refer to “Section 8: Specifications” for details.

(2) Valid samples for the cooling mode

By measuring high-volatile samples with the ASC-550L unit, samples will vaporize
from the gastight microsyringe tip and stable measurement cannot be run. In
addition, a fire may be caused by the ignition to vaporized combustible gas.
By keeping vials and a gastight microsyringe low-temperature with the cooling
mode, sample vaporization from the syringe tip after sampling can be controlled.
Thus, measurement values fluctuation can be reduced and measurement can be
run safely.

(3) Cautions in the cooling mode

• When humidity is high, dew condensation is generated on the cooling part and
a fire or an electric shock may be caused. Use an air conditioner to maintain the
temperature environment free from dew condensation. When dew condensation
occurs on the cooling part, check that the ASC-550L unit has stopped
completely. Wipe water with a dry cloth.
• Even when a cooled gastight microsyringe is used, some samples vaporize
from the needle tip. Do not measure these samples to avoid a fire.
• By using samples which become more viscous or solidifies by cooling, samples
can not be aspirated or a gastight microsyringe breaks. Check sample
conditions before measurement start.
Control a setting environment and sample temperature as the above. Understand
sample properties before using the STC-500L unit.

WARNING Handling in combustible

samples
By measuring high-volatile combustible samples, a fire may be caused by
the ignition to vaporized combustible gas. Fully understand sample
properties and the unit performance before handling the samples.

STC-500L (NSX-5000)
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS 9

About the Heating Mode

When using the STC-500L unit in the heating mode, the performance and cautions are
as follows.

(1) Temperature control system

Temperature is controlled by the Peltier element and controllable temperature
depends on room temperature. The maximum setting temperature is 60 ℃ in the
heating mode. Refer to “Section 8: Specifications” for details.

(2) Valid samples for the heating mode

By measuring high-viscosity liquid samples with the ASC-550L unit, samples can
not be aspirated with a gastight microsyringe and stable measurement cannot be
run.
Keep vials and a gastight microsyringe high-temperature in the heating mode.
Sample viscosity can be reduced and sample aspiration will be easier. Thus,
measurement values fluctuation can be reduced.

(3) Cautions in the heating mode

• When humidity is high, dew condensation is generated on the fin and a fire or
an electric shock may be caused. Use an air conditioner to maintain the
temperature environment free from dew condensation. When dew condensation
occurs on the fin, check that the ASC-550L unit has stopped completely. Wipe
water with a dry cloth.
• By heating samples in the heating mode, viscosity reduces and they may fall
from the gastight microsyringe tip. For samples with low boiling points, they
easily vaporize from gastight microsyringe tip after sampling. A fire may be
caused. Do not lower sample temperature too much.
• By sampling without melting a solid sample, the gastight microsyringe may be
broken. Check the sample conditions before measurement start.
• Even if sampling is run with the solid sample melted, some samples solidify on
the microsyringe tip. Do not measure these samples to avoid microsyringe
breakage.
Control a setting environment and sample temperature as the above. Understand
sample properties before using the STC-500L unit.

WARNING Handling in combustible

samples
By measuring high-volatile combustible samples, a fire may be caused by
the ignition to vaporized combustible gas. By using the heating mode,
viscosity reduces. They may fall from the gastight microsyringe tip and
vaporize from the tip. Fully understand sample properties and the unit
performance before handling the samples.

sample in the measuring vials and the gastight microsyringe, start the measurement.

STC-500L (NSX-5000)
4-2 Measurement

4-3. Bottle Setting

In STC-500L, “B No.” (bottle number) that can be entered is different from the normal
ASC-550L vial tray. Only 12 to 19, 22 to 29, and 32 to 39 can be set. Check the “B No.”
of the schedule before measurement.

WARNING Input outside the setting range

When “B No.” is set to other than 12 to 19, 22 to 29, and 32 to 39, the
gastight microsyringe tries to aspirate the sample from places where there
are no holes to set the measuring vials in the STC vial rack. Therefore, it
may be damaged and cause a fire.

When “B No.” outside the range is entered, it cannot be added to the schedule even if
[Add] on the Step Editor window is clicked. When [Constant] is used, “B No.” that cannot
be set is skipped and entered.

4-4. Dealing with Condensation

If condensation occurs on the cooling part of STC-500L, wipe off the water with a dry cloth
while the ASC-550L unit is completely stopped. If it is left, it may corrode the unit or short-
circuit the power supply.
If condensation occurs frequently, review the humidity of the installation environment.

4-5. Operation After Measurement

When the power switch (POWER) on the temperature controller front is turned off, its
display will disappear and the temperature control will stop. For other post-measurement
