FIRST WORDS
Hello there, it's a pleasure to meet you. I am Habeebah, and like
you my passion for STEAM and explorative learning grows by
the day.

As much as this book is for you, it’s also for me. let's go on this
journey together.

As a long time enthusiast, what I have penned down in this book

are my realisations, and lessons which I have gathered over
time.
There is no doubt that there is still so much more to learn, and
so much more to implement, but as my love for stem continues
to grow, I see the need to let you in on these lessons.

In hope that you might find something useful for use in your
personal life, or in your journey towards growth and change as a
professional.
In the long run, the goal of STEM is to open up the mind to
learn, unlearn and relearn without bias.
Much love,
BEEBAHTICS

P.s I used the acronym STEM and STEAM interchangeably in

here. One sometime more than the other.
Please know that they both mean the same thing and
should not beconfused differently.
THE BIG DEAL ABOUT STEM
Perhaps you wonder what the big deal is about STEM, or you
ask yourself why STEM has become the buzzword in the
learning space, this chapter let’s you in on insights about STEM,
and why it’s become a big deal you cannot afford to ignore.
Each day, we wake up to new digital initiatives, and we find our
lives becoming more intertwined with technology. Your toddlers
who are digital natives find it so easy to navigate technology,
and the youngsters have no issues understanding the language
of computers.

STEM stands for Science. Technology .Engineering and

Mathematics.
Overtime, it has gone beyond its acronym. it has become a
poster word to indicate the integration of subjects, skills and
practical experience into one.

The sciences have merged into the Arts, the Maths and
Technology have all come together to create a wholesome
learning experience for your upcoming learners, kids and
teenagers.

What makes STEM unique, is its attempt to prepare young

people for what they would face in the future through
approaches that helps them to think deeper, and open up
their horizons and thoughts.

STEM fosters creativity, and encourages young minds to come

up with new ideas, initiatives and action plans,
a way to get them ready to take on the
future challenges and make viable attempts
in solving them.
MEET BEEBAHTICS
Beebahtics began with my passion to help my son explore to
the best of his ability, knowing that he could do so much more.

During my search for the best of resources for his usage, I

realised that the ideal resources cannot be easily sourced for,
leaving a huge gap for parents who had the same robotics
interest for their children.

• My journey into STEM began with simple open resources

like building blocks or magnetic tiles. As simple as they were to
me as an adult, I quickly realised that these resources were
not only for the fun of it, rather, they were there to push the
boundaries of thoughts for the younger ones, encouraging
them to think beyond the instructions before them, and come
up with models from the depths of their imaginations

• At that point, I was not after the fact that they were having
fun, what I saw was kids engaging their creative abilities, and
constantly thinking of new things to come up with.

• My goal with Beebahtics is to help you engage your child

productively as a parent, or your students as an educator,
through STEM, and give you the support you need to
encourage your child who is highly innovative, and shows the
zeal for TECHNOLOGY.

• My goal is to make it easy for you to raise the next

generation of tech inventors or creators in your
homes, schools and institutions through resources
that bring out the best in them, and challenges
their talents and potentials.

STEM, CODING AND ROBOTICS; BEYOND THE OBVIOUS

THE DEFINITION OF THESE TERMS CAN BE EASILY FOUND.

AS SUCH, THAT IS NOT THE AIM OF THIS CHAPTER.

STEM, CODING AND ROBOTICS are intertwined. You really

would find it difficult to mention one without the other. However,
in the long run, there are 3 major goals you should be looking to
achieve when you engage in any stem based activity.

1. PLAY: Play is a natural language of learning for the human

mind, and especially for kids and teenagers. The result you would
get when you engage kids in play based learning are more
profound than the result you would get in a streamlined and rigid
learning structure like we have today.

2. POWERFUL IDEAS: What your child learns, and how they

learn it would afford them the ability to bring forth new ways of
thinking. Stem seeks to provide a channel that helps the mind
remain curious, ask questions, examine differently, recognise
patterns, solve problems and experience the thrill that comes with
achieving a goal after having gone through a process.

3. CRITICAL THINKING: Going by my experience with coding, I

would have loved to call this point computational thinking, or
logical thinking. Because coding requires you to use your logic to
arrive at a conclusion, and then to analyse your result, or to break
bigger pictures into smaller pieces.

In actual fact, we see a lot of critical thinking trends when kids

play,(imagine preschoolers stacking different shapes to form an
image, or moulding towers with sand or recognizing loops and
holes using threads and beads)
and because they are quite young and naturally charming, we are
marvelled at what they can do at such a young age.
But again, our traditional learning methods take all that
away, or reduces it to minimum.
STEM KITS VS ROBOT KITS
There is a difference between STEM kits and ROBOT Kits.

Stem kits, such as Magnetic tiles and plain building blocks mostly
require NO form of coding or programming. They can be used
straight out of the box, without hassles and are quite simple,
interesting and fun.

Stem kits takes the creativity level of your kids from 0 to 100.
When it comes to pricing, they are cheaper and much more
affordable for the general populace.

Robot kits on the other hand requires the knowledge of coding or

programming. You would mostly find them either as pre-built robots
that doesn’t require much building or in the form of programmable
building blocks and parts that needs to be put together to form your
dream robot.
They come with softwares, coding interfaces and Apps to make you
animate and control your robots or whatever you have built.

Some robot kits like our Quarky A.I kit made by Stempedia contains
digital courses and curriculum to teach you the basics of coding
and Artificial Intelligence and infact, certify you especially if you’re
a Newbie.

Some other Robot kits are 2 kits in 1. They combine STEM with
Robotics. (Like most of Our Engino kits). While some kits are
basically for educational purposes and
are made solely for classrooms and stem labs.

These classroom based kits are bigger, contain more

parts and can take about 3 students at a time.
They also contain curriculums, and lesson plans
to make
class sessions easier and much more
organised.
WHY YOU NEED A ROBOT KIT

Robot kits makes your kids or students think deeply, because

they are solving a challenge and not just playing.
Robot kit brings the critical skills of your little ones to the fore
(thinking, coding, collaborating, building, designing, solving,
failing, learning from mistakes et al) without losing out on the
fun of it, and these amongst many others makes it such a
versatile tool for teaching STEM or robotics to kids and
teenagers.
HOW STEM
BENEFITS YOU
In the long run, STEM, when applied correctly and consistently,
births a whole lot of benefits and transformation in you, and
your learners.
When you engage in STEM,CODING and robotics on a
consistent level, you would notice a significant improvement in
these skills mentioned above. This is because when Stem is
correctly applied, it brings forth benefits that rubs off on you
and your learners.

The tradition of learning as we know it, is for learners to gulp as

much information as possible whether by rote or
throughcramming. STEM changes all that, and gives room for
real learning, understanding and real world application to take
place.

As an Educator, STEM gives you a break from the traditional

methods and gives you the opportunity to help your learners
experience learning through Hands-on resources. This way,
your students would be happy to engage with you and look
forward to more lessons from you.
As a parent, Stem helps you to engage your child more
meaningfully, and instill in them the skill that helps them think
outside the box.
HOW STEM
BENEFITS YOU
STEM provides a unique way for learners to explore concepts
and facts, and helps you as a parent or Educator to interract
better with them.
It also introduces your learners to diverse subject content, and
provides a shift in interest and passion based on what your
learners are exposed to.

Your horizons expand with Stem, because in engaging your

students, your thoughts travel wide, your imaginations are
activated and your exciting activities promotes analysis and
strategy in your students.

Employers of the future would be on the lookout for the brains

that can offer creative solutions in the face of challenges.

STEM, on the other hand encourages your children to think out

of the box, and apply innovative ideas to situations.

For STEM, the end result is not what matters the most. The
process of trial and experimentation, the process of design,
collaboration and analysis are much more valuable and sought
after.
LEARN TO UNLEARN

To unlearn is to empty your cup, to put aside accumulated

habits that have now become irrelevant

When it comes to learning, we usually assume that our role as

adults is to provide the knowledge via teaching or instructing
or lecturing.
We are used to the system of providing the solutions as the
experts that we are, and having our learners read, study or
assimilate what we have provided.
Our old system have very well become almost irrelevant for
the new generation of learners.

In raising learners for a future that is digitally oriented and

project based, learners are not necessarily motivated to
explore or make practical efforts to actually learn.

The focus is on knowing rather than understanding or

applying with only a little avenue for students to think deeply
or give their own inputs while learning.
GET READY

In dealing with STEM, Get ready:

●To learn from children. The notion that adults or educators

must always be the experts does not apply. As digital
immigrants, our perspective is quite different from the
perspective of a digital native. While I agree that it is an
uncomfortable position for adults to be in, it’s a fact that we
need to contend with. Your role in STEM, is actually to serve as
a guide and a facilitator, guiding them towards their own
discovery and answers

●To engage in a process of solving problems, and facilitating

their efforts, rather than dumping the content on them. The
content would change. With stem and coding, softwares get
updated, technologies keep improving, and the best way to
prepare ourselves and our learners is to nurture them towards
learning the process and having the wherewithal to update their
knowledge.

●To fail, to make mistakes, and be the wrong one. And by

such situations, guide children or learners through the process
of relating with failure, bouncing back after such occurrences,
interacting with colleagues while things don’t go well for you,
and being a good team player while at it. It is not an easy feat to
develop the spirit of sportsmanship, and keep emotions in
check while in the heat of the moment. Yet, these are important
skills that are key for the innovators of the future to have in
their bags, and for the teachers of these innovators to instill in
them.
THE STEM MAP

In most cases, A Stem session only lasts for about

60 minutes a week, and if care is not taken, it
becomes difficult for a Stem educator to make the
most of those minutes effectively.
The STEM MAP is an activity sheet map guide that I
have put together based on my personal interaction
with STEM. It is a visual representation of what your
STEAM sessions should look like and if adopted, it
gives you a picture of what and how learning would
take place for you and your learner.
YOUR STEM MAP
YOUR STEM MAP WORKSHEET

Before you begin every STEM session, try to

make a flexible structure of your session. Be
sure to ask yourself the following questions
and pen down your thoughts as much as
possible

Question #1: What the new opportunity would my students

gain from this session?

Question #2: What is the one Big takeaway I want them to

have from this session?

Question #3: What special challenge can I create for them to

excite their interest?

Question #4: What practical story can I use to draw in their

interest?

Question #5: What are the false beliefs I want them to do

away with after this session

Question #6: What are the kits I would need? How do I group
them to work together effortlessly?

PROCESS: Is solely determined by how rich you decide the

learning process to take, and the parameters for engagement
by your learners. However there are certain standards you can
adapt especially with regards to the Engineering design
process.

How do you think learners should engage, what rules should

they follow, how should they pen down their thoughts and
come to a conclusion?

What should be featured in their presentation? Should they

follow a pattern?

ASSESSMENT
This is a very important aspect of the map. It involves the
learners and their guide having a full assessment of what they
have learnt, what results they got, and extracting other learning
points for the learners to note.
At this point, stem guides or educators should discuss issues,
observations, skills and actions that needs to be corrected and
look out for them again at a later session.

FINAL WORDS...

1.YOU CAN DO IT: You can. Never underestimate the power you
have as a parent, or as an Educator. Your learners or kids look
up to you. If you’re reading this especially as a parent, all you
need for a start is to create a little time off with your little ones
from your busy schedule to challenge them and get their
creative juices flowing. This will augment the lessons they
receive at their schools or afterschool program and make them
prepped up for an innovative future.

2.EMBRACE THE STEM CULTURE: It may not come easy for us to

adapt ourselves to the changing world, but it has become
necessary to help our kids and students become STEM literate
at least in the most basic way. Not all students would take up
jobs in Coding, Robotics or system development, but all kids
would need to have the knowledge of technology to soar higher
above their peers.
FINAL WORDS...

3.LEARN SOME, AND HAVE SOME FUN TOO: Stem, coding or

robotics is not for your kids alone. It would be so much fun for
you to go out of your comfort zone to do some tech learning and
engage your kids as well. You need to be top of your game. You
need to be one step ahead. And as we raise a generation of
thinkers who we hope will make positive changes to our future,
we also want to be in the loop of things to be able to provide the
right sprinkle of guidance and mentorship they need to succeed.

I hope you learnt one or 2 things from this little piece I have put
together, and I hope that this has given you a little motivation to
begin with STEM wherever you find yourself.

As the path of growth for STEM/STEAM fires up in Nigeria and

Africa, we want to contribute to it as much as we can by making
impacts in the lives of the next generation, and by making the
path to their development much easy and fun.

To do this, I invite you to get ahead of the curve and take your
school to the next level using our STEM resources and ROBOT
KITS for your schools and Stem sessions. You can get these kits
when you reach out to us via any of our links above.
