Turkey and wire Middle East Africa in Egypt, will join wire
Southeast Asia in Bangkok and wire China in Shanghai
on the 2023 events calendar, which can be seen on page
4 of this issue. Like all “wire” trade fairs, I expect that
these 2023 productions will be first-class and filled with
good exhibits and focused visitors.
And in the USA this spring, all wire making and wire
forming eyes should be on or in Atlanta when the fa-
miliar Interwire exhibition will be staged the first time
since 2019. As usual, the organizer of Interwire, the Wire
Association International (WAI), is putting together an
interesting lineup of valuable educational, business and
networking opportunities at its flagship event. You can
see some early details on page 8, and we will have a full
preview in the Spring 2023 issue of Wire Forming Tech-
nology International (WFTI). Our updated Editorial Plan
for 2023 is shown on the top right column of this page.
Thermodynamics
The entry level for claiming energy expertise in the 21st
century seems pretty low these days as modern-day
central planners are busy writing their utopian dreams
into laws and mandates. This phenomenon along with
an energy question from a recent game of Trivial Pur-
suit prompted me to think about a university course in
thermodynamics that I completed about four decades
ago. In particular, I was trying to recall the basic laws of
this branch of natural science (not political science), and
I found that my memory was vague, but not completely
off target. The four natural laws of thermodynamics are
fairly complex, but I believe that two of them are most
relevant to our modern thoughts on energy. The First
Law of Thermodynamics states that energy can be con-
verted from one form to another with the interaction of
heat, work and internal energy, but it cannot be created
nor destroyed, not under any circumstances.
So in other words, batteries don’t create energy, they
store energy that has been generated and captured from
other sources. In addition, electricity is not created, it
is generated by capturing and converting energy from
another source that already exists. And the Second Law
tells us that when energy sources are left alone, they will
naturally retreat to more random states, which means
we have to do work to harness energy into useful forms.
Finally, I doubt that there are any intrinsically good
or bad sources of energy, and that the best methods of
gathering and transferring them
efficiently as well as capturing
and eliminating undesirable emis-
sions have not all been discovered
by scientists and engineers, and
definitely not by any of our most
popular politicians or celebrities.

management buy-out, as it looks to
target £15 million annual sales for the
first time in its 77-year history.
Alloy Wire International (AWI)’s
senior management team, comprising
Managing Director Tom Mander,
Technical Director Andrew Du Ples-
sis and Finance Director Adam Shaw,
has purchased the business from the
current owners, cementing the Black
Country firm’s long-term future.
The deal will see all 33 members
of staff become shareholders in the

sive liquids and gases and, judg-
ing by the conversations we were
having, there appears to be a lot
of opportunities for us to supply
this material.

Gary McCoy as
New Executive Director
The executive committee of the
Spring Manufacturers Institute
(SMI), Oak Brook, IL, USA, has

Bill Graham Retires
from AWI After 50
Years of Service

(AWI) growth has decided to call
it a day after clocking in more than
five decades of service.
Bill Graham will retire this
month after what has been a roller-
coaster career with the world’s

saw him start as a Maintenance
Engineer before leading an MBO,
overseeing a sale and then bring-
ing the company back into his
ownership.
The former Machine Tool En-
gineering apprentice was also
instrumental in growing the firm’s
international presence, travelling
the globe to build export sales
from nothing to over half of its
annual turnover.
He has been Chairman for the
last nine years, providing strategic
guidance on growth opportuni-
ties, industry developments and
supporting the management team
in the firm’s rapid expansion from
£8 million in 2013 to £13 million at
the start of 2022.
“When I joined the business
in 1972, I never expected to still
be involved 50 years later—Alloy
Wire International gets you like
that,” explained Graham, who
was born in Paisley in Scotland,
but now lives in the Wyre Forest.
“There’s just something really spe-
cial about the business and what
we do, especially since we took the
decision to be employee owned.
“That was really the moment
we put the marker in the sand
and created the unique culture
that has seen AWI become a glob-
ally trusted supplier of 60+ strong
range of alloys to more than 7000
customers.
“After five decades of involve-
ment, I felt the time was right to
call it a day and focus on retire-
ment. What will that look like?
Travelling and spending much
more time with my wife Sandra,
who I first met at AWI in 1974.”
Graham has enjoyed many
achievements during his time at
Alloy Wire International. How-
ever, if you ask him for the piv-
otal movement, he will always
say it was the moment when he
implemented his lifelong dream of
introducing employee ownership
and profit sharing for each and
every member of staff.
This initiation of employee
ownership, galvanized the work-
force and 23 years on is still in
place, with new starters offered
the opportunity to join the scheme
once they have been with the busi-
ness for two years.
“When you are on a journey
you must take your best assets
with you. By showing our em-
ployees that everything they did
would ultimately benefit them, the
culture changed overnight, and I
can honestly say we are a family
now and that is reflected in how
we have grown the huge customer

Acme Wire Has
New Solar Roof at
its Connecticut Plant
In 2022, Acme Wire Products
invested in a solar panel roof for its
plant in Mystic, CT, USA to reduce
its carbon footprint. The company,

welded wire assemblies in Con-
necticut, also got to showcase the
roof at a September plant tour for
the Wire Fabricators Association
(WFA).
Michael Planeta, Vice Presi-
dent of Operations for Acme Wire
Products, said that the time was
right for the company to make the
investment.
“One of our goals as a company
is to be a responsible member of
the community either locally or
globally. An investment in a solar
array had been on our radar. We
had received proposals from a
number of integrators over the
years, and the financial payback

was too long of a hurdle. With the
improvements in the performance
of solar panels over the years and
the price of the panels and instal-
lation having come down it finally
made sense from a financial stand-
point,” she said.
The roof of the Mystic company
has 672 panels that have an annual
capacity of £266,000 kWh, which is
enough to meet 90% of the com-
pany’s electricity usage, Planeta
said. The company did not get any
state or federal funding, but utility
incentives enabled the project to be
financially feasible.
The company got to display
its roof at a tour by members of
WFA as part of its fall conference.
The visit included a presentation
on the solar panels by Dynamic
Energy. Planeta, a past WFA presi-
dent, said that it is both a good
investment as well as a responsible
action. The project is estimated to
have a five-year payback, and so
far, the financial model are prov-

Wälzholz to Source
Low-Carbon Wire Rod
from ArcelorMittal
As part of their business part-
nership, ArcelorMittal will be
supplying C.D. Wälzholz GmbH
& Co. KG with low-carbon emis-
sion wire rods known as XCarb®
recycled and renewably produced
from its Hamburg plant in the fu-
ture. These steels are produced on
the basis of scrap and renewable
electricity (100%). The low-carbon
footprint of 504 kg (1111 lb) carbon
dioxide per metric ton of steel is
confirmed with an official Envi-
ronmental Product Declaration
(EPD). The first metric 20 tons of
wire rods were delivered this week
to the cold rolled steel manufac-
turer’s site in Hagen, Germany.
Waelzholz will be using the mate-
rial to manufacture hardened and
tempered profiles for industrial
applications, among others.
ArcelorMittal already began
supplying XCarb green steel cer-
tificates to the international manu-
facturer based in Hagen, Ger-
many, back in 2021. The reduction
of carbon emissions in these certifi-
cates is 2.11 metric tons of carbon
dioxides per metric ton of steel and
originates from various sustain-
ability projects at ArcelorMittals
production sites. The savings are
mass balanced on a central account
and independently verified.

wire rods from the company is
now the logical continuation of our
partnership and allows us to ex-
pand our range of climate-friendly
wire rod products. ArcelorMittal

Lead Wire Association
International in 2023
The Wire Association Interna-
tional (WAI), Inc., Madison, CT,
USA, announces the appointment
of Kurt F. Breischaft as the 70th
president of the association for a
one-year term that commenced
on January 1, 2023. Breischaft will
chair the Board of Directors of the
93-year-old association.
Breischaft has more than 30
years’ experience in the copper

The Professional Confessional
Since manufacturing is defined by product quality, pro-
fessionalism is expected in both Engineering and Quality
Control. But… how is that discipline defined?
I believe a survey of 100 people would yield about 20
variations of that question. There are, however, certain
aspects of professional conduct that are common and
not just industry related. Here is a list, in my view, of
essential professional expectations.
Courteous—although this should be a staple of a pro-
fessional, too often it is not taught. It implies an attitude
of positive delivery, positive personality and confidence.
It does not imply the need to deliver personal information
or schmoozy commentary. A customer representative or
buyer expects pertinent information first and pleasant-
ries later. Concentrate on accurate delivery information
and less on your daughter’s piano recital. If the customer
rep opens the door, then tread slowly. Let them be the
one to open the dialogue and then listen to what they are
telling you as it may be needed in the next conversation.
Above all, do not lie. Be an ear… not a counselor. And
always end on “is there anything else I can do for you
today?” Do not be loud or a laugh factory—those traits
are reserved for coaches and comedians.
Efficient—this means be the one who can give the
answers to the questions asked. If you cannot give the
answer needed, then respond, “I do not know the an-
swer to that question, but I know someone who does.
Let me give her/him a call and he/she will call you back
today.” This is such a simple concept, but many times
ends with excuse-laden rhetoric that wastes the time of
all involved. Also, the reason you may not want to just
transfer the call directly is that a detailed answer may
involve some research or study from the source. This
lets that person have the information ready when he or
she calls back, and makes for informative communica-
tion throughout and a good impression.
Industry Savvy—know your product. It could take years
to really communicate well on details of both the design
and science of an engineered product. The one action
that negates from the very purpose of an experienced
Engineering contact is letting a customer speak to some-
one who does not have the chops to lead and inform.
In the spring trade, there a dozens of commodities that
perform a spring function. Even a simple cantilever is a
spring since it can store and release a force and then
return to its original geometric shape. It requires years
of hands-on exposure to real-world samples and pro-
cess training to understand how all the many designs
are formed and fabricated. It too, requires knowledge of
many material types and multiple coating options. This
takes years of work and dedication that doesn’t result
from casual exposure. Be sure the proper person re-
sponds when critical information needs to be exchanged,
and misinformation is not an option. Also, engineers
require special knowledge of numerous industries, which
requires unique understanding of their intricacies such
as agriculture, heavy equipment, appliances and auto
racing. They are specialty industries and need someone
who understand their lexicon and nomenclature. If you’re
working with suspension products, but don’t know the
meaning of coil bind, do your research. Be prepared for
success and you will create your professional approach
to all aspects of spring design.
Computer Wits—it’s not going away so get good at it.
I started with a Commodore 64 and am now on Windows
11. The evolution has been exponential, especially with
speed and storage potential. And not just the systems,
but the production and inventory support software. Dig
in and use the technology.
Above all… be a professional. Discipline is the way to
true success. Feel good about all the things you do.
A professional’s best friend is another professional in

Spring Design Training Program Update
Spring design training programs offered by the Spring
Manufacturers Institute (SMI) continue to be well
received by both members and nonmembers.
We presented our first course for 2023, 301 Springs-
Fatigue, virtually on Thursday, January 19, with
favorable reviews from student attendees.
To date, 597 students have participated in training

Training Overview
As discussed in previous issues of this magazine, the
Spring Manufacturers Institute’s training program
consists of three fundamental, seven basic, and four
advanced spring design training classes. Fundamen-
tals courses were developed with new hires and non-
technical staff in mind. Basic classes are designed
to meet the needs of production and technical staff
including engineers, designers and inspectors. Ad-

vanced courses address a higher level of expertise
for engineers, designers and other technical staff. The
SMI technical committee has been working to develop
these programs.
Two fundamentals training modules, “Spring Funda-
mentals” and “Overview of Springmaking Materials,”
are available to the public on the SMI website. SMI
member feedback for these modules has been very
favorable.
Courses are organized as focused, real-world spring
design training programs, combining basic spring
design content for each spring type with practical
hands-on use of SMI’s world-famous Advanced Spring
Design 7 (ASD7) software.
For each spring type, students will learn:

• Definitions and terminology
• Design theory
• Design stress analysis
• How to input engineering design data into
the ASD7 software
• Important ASD7 tolerancing criteria

ISO/TC227 Springs 2023 Meeting in the USA
SMI will host the 19th meeting of ISO/TC227 from Sep-
tember 14 to 15, 2023, in Las Vegas, NV, USA. This will
be the first in person meeting of the group since 2019.
Tom Armstrong, who is the head of the U.S. delega-
tion and retired Chairman of Duer/Carolina Coil,
commented, “I look forward to September when we
will hopefully be able to again share social interaction
and in-person meetings. The past three ISO/TC227
virtual meetings have been a challenge because of the
pandemic. It is because of the personal relationships
developed during prior in-person meetings that ena-
bled great progress to be made in the working groups.
The virtual ‘business only’ meetings have gotten the
necessary jobs done, but I look back fondly to when
the meetings were much more!”
SMI serves as the technical advisory group to the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for
ISO/TC227. The role of the U.S. delegation is essential
to ensure that the interests of American spring manu-
facturers, designers and consumers are represented in
international standards development. SMI technical
experts bring many years of manufacturing experi-
ence to the ISO/TC227 working groups developing
new standards.

Failure Analysis Program
A spring failure analysis program was developed to
meet the needs of SMI member companies and is also
available to non-member companies. We use several
laboratories, working with the requesting company to
select the laboratory which will best meet their needs
for spring failure analysis and to identify the root cause
of the failure for effective corrective action.

C. Richard Gordon (Rick) serves as Technical Direc-
tor for the Spring Manufacturers Institute. He has
over 45 years’ experience in the steel and wire indus-
tries. Since retiring in 2016, he formed an engineering,
quality and technology consulting firm focusing on pro-
cess optimization, best manufacturing practices, qual-
ity systems and training.
He previously worked at Gerdau Long Steel North
America’s Beaumont, Texas and Perth Amboy, New
Jersey steel mills as technical service metallurgist. He
also worked with the National Standard Company
managing groups in R&D, quality, and process tech-
nology for carbon steel and stainless-steel wire prod-
ucts. In addition, Gordon worked for Baoan Inter-
national Investment Co. Ltd., a Chinese trading
company in Covina, California and the U.S. Steel
Corporation in Chicago; Waukegan, Illinois; and
Monroeville, Pennsylvania.
He is a graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technol-
ogy with Master’s and B.S. degrees in metallurgical
and materials engineering.
C. Richard Gordon is currently a member of ASM In-
ternational, ASTM, TMS and The Wire Association
International.
Gordon is a member of the WAI Education Committee
and is a session instructor for WAI’s Fundamentals of
Wire Manufacturing course.

Membership Growth & Incremental Success

NESMA finished off 2022 on a high note as member-
ship grew, and we can look back on incremental suc-
cess. We finished 2022 with our annual Holiday gather-
ing when we welcomed over 100 guests at the Double
Tree Hotel in Bristol, CT, USA, December 1, followed
by our annual meeting and awards ceremony on De-
cember 2. In attendance, we had guests such as Paul
Lavoie, Connecticut’s Chief Manufacturing Officer,
who reports to the governor’s office. He is the second
person to hold such an appointment, and mentioned
that other states are considering similar positions. His
message rested squarely on building availability of our
workforce.

2022 Award Recipients

At the December 2 annual breakfast meeting we wel-
comed very deserving award recipients. It was our
privilege to award long-time NESMA supporters.
Fourslide Spring and Stamping was awarded as the
company has celebrated 60 years in business. President
Bryan Funk accepted the award on behalf of the past

generations that made it possible. Don Jacobson II was
awarded Lifetime in Industry Commitment Award for
his 50 plus year career in the spring industry. Don was
not only a past President of SMI, but also NESMA. His
stoic message of industry camaraderie was mixed with
humor, family influences, learning experiences and
professional development. He was proud to admit he
no longer had a key to any Newcomb facility.
Factory Tours
On the educational front, we were very fortunate to
have factory tours arranged by our Technical Develop-
ment Committee, this was through a local career day,
December 16, at Plainville High School in Plainville,
CT, USA. There were many companies willing to pro-
vide tours with a host of members within a 10 minute
drive. Rowley Spring and Stamping and Plymouth
Spring being within close proximity of both the school
and one another headed the call with participation
from their executive level down to the shop floor. Stu-
dents started the day with a career fair followed by a
choice of their own adventure, where students were
bused to different participating businesses. This was
the first year running the program, and we do hope

known that his absence was felt as they no longer
shared an office. Don Jacobson III also made a brief ad-
dress on behalf of SMI at the Holiday dinner.
Our Spring Industry Community Advocate Award
was given to Sharon Lutkus, Interim Director of Ad-
vanced Manufacturing Technology at Naugatuck
Valley Community College. Sharon has tirelessly
fought for training programs for both Coiler Set Up
and Fourslide training. A frequent participant on our
NESMA Technical Development Committee, she was
provided the award by our Technical Development
Committee Chairperson, Al Mangels. To break up
this action, trophies were presented to our 2022 Golf
Champions foursome led by Ted Lucas, Board Mem-
ber and CPA at Marcum LLP. Ted and his group vow
to defend their title in 2023.

tee meets monthly and continues to work with vari-
ous schools and is attempting to bring SMI curriculum
to students. A major initiative continues to be a new
manufacturing center at Tunxis Community College
currently under construction. We are lobbying for a
presence of the spring industry as the facility is in a
close proximity to a large portion of our members. Ide-
ally, the college would have equipment, which could
host various training programs. If you’re a NESMA
member, let your voice be heard on our initiatives. You
are welcome to join our monthly calls. Please contact

Our events committee has a the annul “NESMA Expo

It’s Not Funny!!!!
Handicapping and
Horsing Around
The incidents and technical situations in
these columns were, in fact, encountered
in the author’s professional practice.
Names and places have been changed
in some cases to protect the guilty.
I once took a substantial interest in horse rac-
ing. I had no success in betting, but I read a lot
and found some of the principles
of trying to pick winners intriguing
and even relevant to wire manu-
facturing. One of the principles
for predicting a horse’s success
that I remember could be summa-
rized as “speed, pace and class,
and the greatest of these is class”.
Simply put, the faster a horse can
run (speed), the more likely it seems it will win.
However, careless application of early speed, by
horse and or jockey, may wear down the horse
and complicate tactical handling in the stretch,
hence the value of judicious pacing.
This seems reasonable, but given all the above, it
seems that there are classes of horses and jock-
eys who sense their intangible superiority, over
and above their basic skills and assets. Hence,
the concept of class.
In this context, the results of the 2022 Kentucky
Derby are intriguing. The winner, “Rich Strike”,
ridden by Venezuelan veteran Sonny Leon, was
an 80-to-1 long shot, paying US$163.60, who was
only allowed in the race after a late scratch of an-
other horse.
Even so, regarding speed, it should be noted that
“Rich Strike” had been running much stronger re-
cently and at higher speed in recent races, even
winning a middle-level race. Moreover, for some
reason the pace of this Kentucky Derby was truly
exceptional, namely a near-record at the half-mile
(45.36 seconds), with the pack wearing them-
selves out prematurely, for whatever reason. And
so, the Derby result was somewhat rationalizable

in the face of the speed and pace rules, and the
fact that “Rich Strike” may not yet have developed
a sense of his class! You can read all about it in
the sports pages.
Whether you have a “Rich Strike” in your shop, or
not, I encourage you to consider,
at least consider briefly, the rel-
evance of speed, pace and class
to wire manufacturing.
Of course, higher drawing speed
would seem to intrinsically in-
crease productivity. However, in
most multi-die machines, there will
be an inherent increase in speed
as the wire gets thinner and longer. This increase
in speed may impact frictional heating and cooling
effects, lubricant film thickness and so on. Prac-
tical analysis of such can be very complicated,
yet a lot can be learned by simply calculating the
wire speed as it emerges from coming out of each
die. Special considerations may have to be im-
plemented during pointing and starting up. At a
minimum, you should be able to make a sophis-
ticated estimate of drawing speed at any point in
the drawing string using a simple spread sheet.
I was speaking with the president of a sophisticat-
ed drawing machine company many years ago.
He was lamenting about having to promote and
display his newer, faster machines. He said: “I
must display and promote our new, advanced ma-
chines, even though most of my customers would
do better with somewhat slower machines, owing
to down time when the wire beaks.” Now, wire and
multi-wire machines have evolved considerably in
modern times. Even so, the loss of productivity,
due to down time, must be part of practical pro-
cess analysis.
And what about class? We could start with safety
and the priority of such in employee relations, cus-
tomer relations and having to make a profit. This
is a tough one, but class will show up somewhere
in the marketplace. As an aside, I was once told of
a job interviewee who alleged that no one makes
money in the wire industry. He did not get the job.
Finally, on the other side of the track, an acquaint-
ance of mine was once being taken on a tour of
a ferrous rod/wire facility. At one point in the se-
quence of operations there was an indicator that
read “60”. My acquaintance asked about the val-
ue or meaning of “60”. The host said: ”Well…, we
like to keep it at “60”. “Sixty what?” my acquaint-
ance pursued. An awkward silence ensued, and
my acquaintance could see that he had asked an
embarrassing question. Sometimes ignorance is
bliss. It was time to move on to the next process.

Latest Advances in the
Mechanical Testing of
Steel Reinforcement Concrete-reinforcing steel is manufactured from a long
product and its surface shape varies according to the
manufacturing standard.
The specimen has a constant cross-section over its
length. In addition, the specimen’s shape must be
straight without curvature. Specimens with curvature
must be straightened before testing.
The cross-section of the specimen is significant for ten-
sile tests. To determine the cross-section, the length
of the specimen is measured, and it is weighed. The
cross-section is then mathematically calculated from
these values.
Determination of physical characteristics in a classic
tensile test is still the most common test performed
on concrete-reinforcing steel. The tensile test is per-

The mechanical properties of welded fabric and lattice
girders are determined in tensile tests, flexure tests,
node shear tests and in high cycle fatigue tests.

During the flexure test to EN ISO 15630-1, the con-
crete-reinforcing steel is bent to a predetermined angle
(usually 90°). The diameter of the upper former and the
anvils, and the distance between the anvils are usually
specified in the product standard and selected accord-
ing to the nominal diameter of the concrete-reinforcing
steel.
Welded steel lattice reinforcement.
The welded joints (nodes) of reinforcing welded fab-
ric and lattice girders are tested for shearing. This in-
volves removing specimens from welded fabrics and
lattice girders and placing them in special close-fitting
specimen grips. Specimen grips used for this type of

test must be accurately matched to the diameter and
position of the ribbed wires, so that they do not influ-
ence the shearing forces.

Concrete-reinforcing steel is produced in large quan-
tities and must be continually tested for production
monitoring. Automated systems have been developed
in which specimens cut to length from rod material or
separated from mats and lattices are loaded into maga-
zines, after which they are tested on a completely au-
tomatic basis.

Highly automated precast production of walls, double
walls and precast slabs with in-situ topping requires
efficient, intelligent reinforcement production. Main
area of application of the meshes produced is in pre-
cast concrete elements for building construction, resi-
dential and industrial construction. In particular, the
automated production of reinforcement meshes for the
manufacture of precast concrete elements with recesses
for window and door openings, for walls and recesses
for ceilings is becoming increasingly important.
The flexible mesh welding machine MSM-M welds
reinforcing steel meshes directly from the coil—set

to individual CAD drawing specifications. The mesh
width that can be produced on the machine shown is
in the range of 500 to a maximum 3500 mm, depend-
ing on the requirements. The mesh length ranges from
1000 to 8000 mm. Since the system is manufactured
to customer specifications, larger dimensions, both in
length and width, are also possible.
mbk’s DRA-M multiple rotor straightening and cut-
ting machine is used for the automatic loading of the
longitudinal and transverse wires for flexible mesh
production from the coil. The standard wire diameters
to be processed range from 6 to 16 mm and can option-
ally be adjusted from 5 to 20 mm. In this version, the
wires are fed in via five ton reels, alternatively three
ton reels can be used.
DRA-16-M: Longitudinal and transverse wire
transfer to the welding portal.
The longitudinal reinforcement is transferred fully
automatically directly from the DRA-M rotor straight-
ening and cutting machine to the welding unit of the
mesh welding machine. The grid size of the longitu-
dinal reinforcement is 25 mm.
The automatic provision of the additional reinforce-
ment by means of DRA-M on a separate run-off car-
riage is another useful accessory function.
Required lengths of the transverse reinforcement are
assembled with the DRA-M and automatically trans-
ferred to the welding unit of the mesh welding machine
as required. Minimum distance between cross wires is
35 mm and can be adjusted with no upper limit.
Once the mesh is finished, it is automatically labelled
with text and/or barcode as required, the informa-
tion required for this coming directly from the host
computer. A mesh conveyor system enables further
processing via a fully automated traverse. The mesh is
transported automatically - depending on the applica-
tion—for further processing to the bending beam for

Z-bending the end bars (BF4) or directly to the stacking
position. In the subsequent circulation plant, the mesh
is deposited and stacked at the respective positions for
further processing - as in the pallet layout - according
to the master computer specifications.

This further development of the MSM-M mesh weld-
ing machine from mbk also meets the requirements
of everyday suitability and within budget. With the
usual stable and solid construction made in Kisslegg
and low maintenance requirements, mbk guarantees
efficient production processes.
The production capacity of the MSM-M corresponds
to the production requirements of the customer's pal-
let circulation system and is dependent on the layout
and recesses. The MSM-M is developed and built in
different performance levels and with various acces-
sories for automation according to individual customer
requirements. The plant layout is flexible and can be
adapted to local conditions. In this MSM-M mbk im-
plements stacking for buffering in the reverse order:

The Rotor Straightening Method
All straightening and cutting machines operate on two
different principles:
• Two-plane roller configuration, at 90° to each other
• Conventional Rotor straightening with dies
The advantages and disadvantages of the systems are
known. The first does not produce quality straightness
and damages the rebar surface with extreme pressure
on the rebar, while starting and stopping for cutting,
and the second generates too much heat, due to fric-
tion, that reverses any good straightness produced at
the rotor and damages the rebar surface.

Our method is based on the Rotor straightening
system, where instead of dies, we have placed hyper-
bolically profiled steel rollers. The cylinders execute
the two fundamental operations of straightening and
feeding, simultaneously. This is achieved by position-
ing the cylinders at an angle to the rebar/wire and
rotating them round it, and thereby at the same time
accomplishing feeding and straightening.
The placement of the rollers at an angle to the rebar/
wire axis, results in line contact with the rebar surface
and not point contact as in conventional rotors. Also,
when the Rotor is spinning and the rollers are feeding
the rebar/wire through, there is no sliding friction—
only rolling friction—thus the material surface is not
damaged.
Our straightening method ensures better straighten-
ing quality and consistency, which is something that
cannot be found in the competition, since continuous
wear of the dies or the conventional rollers cannot be
avoided.
The Advantages
The EUROBEND MELC straightening and cutting
machines have a number of advantages that are briefly
described below:
1. Machine downtime is minimized, since continu-
ous adjustment of the straightening mechanism
is not needed.
2. Straightening of up to 1800 N/mm2 UTS high-
tensile steel has been achieved and the difficulties
were overcome easily with less expense.
3. Mechanical simplicity of machine construction,
due to the simultaneous feeding and straighten-
ing, results in a machine with stable, constant and
continuous operation.
4. Cutting of the required length is achieved with
flying shear cutter, while the rebar is moving,
without having to start and stop, or to slow down
the speed of the rebar, in order to cut.
5. The simplicity of the design allows the construc-
tion of multi-line machines (up to six Rotors)
depending on the productivity requirements and
the diameter ranges of each customer. Each line
works independent from the others and any com-
bination or all of them can work together. Each has
a dedicated collector bin and can cut the same or
different lengths.

6. By designing the right hyperbolic profile (cur-
vature) of the roller, combined with the proper
surface treatment of the roller and more rarely the
proper coating, we can achieve the desired surface
finish on the straightened rebar surface.
The table below shows the different Rotors available
against the diameter ranges processed by each type:
Each rotor usually is preset for working with from
one up to four different diameters, according to the
customer’s productivity requirements. With the multi-
Rotor configuration, machine production speeds of up
to 500 mpm have been achieved.
Depending on the required output, there are three
different types of MELC straightening and cutting
machines available, using our latest fourth-generation
rotor, as follows:
MELC Monoline Series: These are single-line straight-
ening and cutting machines, capable of achieving
speeds of up to 120 mpm. Speed is adjusted by
frequency-inverter controls, thus the machine adapts
the output to the required productivity needs, where
at the same time the parts life cycle is maximized and
downtime is minimized.
Coil diameter changes can be achieved in less than five
minutes due to the special preset system used. There
are special application modules available, for rebar
twist control and surface finish control (patented) mak-
ing the MELC Monoline Series ideal for high-tensile
(or stainless steel) rebar straightening.
MELC Flexiline Series: These are flexible straightening
and cutting machines, capable of processing up to six
MELC 50 Monoline processing stainless rebar.

interchangeable coils. All MELC Flexiline straightening
and cutting machines are equipped with our unique
convergence guide system for automatic diameter/
coil changes in less than two seconds (patented). The
extremely fast and automatic coil changes enable the
production of different rebar diameters in the same
batch without complicated collection systems.
A flying shear cutter, common to all lines, allows un-
interrupted operation and minimizes material stresses.
Flexiline machines are also equipped with industrial
microprocessor controls and user-friendly operation
using advanced Windows®-based software.

continuous operation within the reinforcing industry.
Each rotor (line) works independently from the others,
thus each line can operate with the same or different
rebar diameter and cut the same or different length.
One up to six straightening rotors (lines) can be com-
bined on the same machine. The production speeds are
up to 500 mpm (1650 fpm). Any size of straightening
rotors from 4 to 20 mm (1/6" to 3/4") diameter can be
combined to form a multi-line machine.
Flying shear cutters cut the straightened rebars while
in motion, thus allowing uninterrupted operation,
minimum material stresses and no marking on the
rebar surface ensured. Each line has an independent

collection system and leads the rebars to a common
collector for all the lines for bundling without inter-
rupting machine operation. Various material handling
systems such as roller, pocket and transfer conveyors
can be combined with automatic bundling and pocket
storage units.
Automatic Output Handling
For the automatic output handling of the MELC series
of straightening and cutting machines, a combination
of the following optional devices can be used for added
production flexibility:
• Powered roller or pocket conveyors
• Bundling machines
• Laterally tilting roller conveyors
• Storage bins
Depending on your preferred way of handling the
straight and cut lengths produced by the MELC
straightening and cutting machine, our flexible stor-
age and bundling solutions will effectively minimize
or even eliminate labor costs and dead times from any
straightening and cutting operation.
The automatic bundling machine is used together
with a single-line powered roller conveyor to produce
perfect bundles for medium-production straight and
cut operations.

nized with the operation of the MELC machine and it
is equipped with a tie wire payoff station and a two-

of turns per tie are programmable through the control
panel of the machine.

What Rebar Fabrication Equipment
Do I Need to Get Into the Business?

If you are considering entering the rebar fabrication
market, and you are wondering what the best selection
of production equipment is best for you to get started,
here are eight things for you to consider.
1. Production Need/Equipment Budget
It’s rare that you have a blank check to buy whatever
equipment you think you might need. In most cases
you have a budget.
You should also have a good idea of the amount of
rebar you will need in a typical month and year. By
understanding your production requirements and
budget, your Rebar Fabrication OEM should help you
spec out the right kit of equipment to meet your needs
and ROI (return on investment).
2. Building Considerations
Next to the kit of equipment, your facility may be
the most important decision when considering rebar
fabrication. Unless you are building a greenfield ap-
plication, most startups look to rent or purchase an
existing structure. Be sure there is sufficient power
(for example, 480 V, 3 phase in the USA, and 575 V
3 phase in Canada). Make sure there is proper ingress
and egress to get tractor trailers in and out easily. Make
sure the ceiling height has plenty of clearance. You
should have at least 20' to the bottom of your hook
or forklift, depending on how long your stock bar is.
3. Stock Length
Straight rebar typically comes in 40' (12 m) or 60' (18 m)
stock lengths from the mills. In most cases the longer
stock length you can handle, the more efficient your
rebar operation will be. When evaluating building
spaces or planning for your facility build, be sure to
leave plenty of space for stock
storage, indoors if possible, and
plenty of ceiling height to lift
bundles to and from trailers.
4. Forklift
or Overhead Crane

may be dependent on if you
are using an overhead crane or

forklifts to move the rebar around. A 10 ton overhead
crane with either a spreader beam or two traveling
bridges and hooks is the most efficient way to handle
60' (18 m) stock. A bundle of 60'. #3 (10 mm) bar sags
quite a bit and to handle that length you need to sup-
port it in two spots. If possible, you’d like 24' from
the bottom of your crane hook to give you plenty of
clearance for moving material around.
If you go with a parallel bay layout, you can get away
with a 5 ton crane in the fabrication bay (see Figure 1).
If a forklift is your only option, 40' (12 m) stock will
be easier to move around. You should have a 10 ton
truck that can lift the bundles high enough to load and
unload trailers and your shear lines.
5. Equipment Layout
Depending on your building layout, there are lots of
ways to layout rebar equipment. Many fabricators
believe the most efficient way is called a parallel bay
layout (Figure 1). The stock is under one crane way
and the fabrication in under a second parallel crane
way. This configuration makes it easy to add on to,
has shorter crane travel to unload and load trucks and
there is no turning of the stock.
Straight-through shops are good for longer shops with
only one bay (Figure 2).
Cross bays are effective to store lots of stock under
roof (Figure 3).
Of course, there are other variables to consider when
laying out equipment, be sure to select an OEM with
modular solutions to help you navigate the dynamics
of your budget, space and production requirements.
6. Manual vs. Automated
In many instances, a startup may just need to be able
to cut and bend smaller quantities of rebar or want to
prove the market before investing more. In this case,
more manual equipment like a stand-alone shear and a
table bender would suffice. As the business grows and
the production demands rise, more automated cutting

economic sense and have a more

Labor is of course a major issue
as well. Many fabricators are
having a hard time hiring in their
markets and are turning to more
automated solutions despite the
added cost compared to more
manual processes.

7. Coiled and Straight
Bar Stirrup Machines
Rebar comes in two forms from
the mill, coiled and straight bar.
The type and amount of work
you are supporting may affect if
you use coiled or straight stock
only. Stirrup machines can re-
duce operator hours and automate the cut and bend
process. But is a straight bar or coil machine best for
you? If you need to cut and bend #4 (12 mm) stirrups
all day long, coils may make sense (Figure 4). Coiled
stock can reduce scrap if you are running the same
bar size all day long and not switching back and forth
between bar diameters. However, change over and
straightening the bar can reduce efficiency.
If you switch bar sizes throughout the day, a straight
bar machine may be best (Figure 5). There is no need
to straighten the bar and the cost of entry for a straight

bar machine is typically less. However, there may be
more scrap as there is a remnant leftover. Perhaps a
combination machine that can run both coiled and
straight stock is the answer. Your rebar fabrication

The new robot Capto for picking up rebars was pre-

sented at bauma in Munich by Pedax GmbH. Pedax
takes the next step towards full automation of its
systems with advanced automation.
The prototype version went into operation at Norsk
Stål at the end of 2021. The robot heads are equipped
with automatic grippers that can be used to remove
shapes of different lengths at an angle of 90°. Robots
can then be place within robot cells or stacks at pre-
defined positions. In order to store compact hangers,
big bags or mobile trolleys, gathering them together
is recommended. Additionally, if you don’t want to
disturb ongoing production, you can hang the stirrups
either on a conveyor belt or on a rotatable wall bar.
With the new generation, the Capto is able to set the
angle between the two grippers from 90° to 180° with-
out manual adjustments by the operator. If the stirrups
have other angles or lengths, the robot system can also
automatically process complete order lists. As a result
of this flexibility, Capto is able to adjust this station
with sophisticated mechanics. Capto approaches the
adjustment station, proceed to adjust the new angle,
engages the grippers again and then locks the station
in place for the new set of stirrups to be processed.

The most recent norms concerning the cold rolled
ribbed wires define new values for total elongation at
the maximum force (Agt%) and stress ratio (Rm/Re).
More and more countries around the world are begin-
ing to follow the way that leads to the hot rolled ribbed
wire characteristics. These values cannot be reached
under the classical system, but they require intervening
mainly on the wire rod chemical composition together
with the cold rolling system.
Rolling Cassettes (lamination boxes): Rolling cassettes
(lamination boxes) have been generally used in many
drawing mills for many years. Their application has
successfully allowed the limits imposed by the classi-
cal methods of cold drawing using a system of roller
lamination instead of drawing.

decades of experience in rolling processes and con-

Shot blasting is the most common pre-treatment technology to prepare the surface of technical springs for subsequent
coating operations. In a manufacturing line for compression springs, this cleaning operation takes place in a tumble belt

the most expensive phase of the entire bar processing.
The high costs and the difficulty of the on-site production
have led to a great demand for more modern solutions and
innovative processes to transfer the production from job

fencing product called “4 D anti climb“ welded wire fenc-
ing. The challenging project did not deter the skilled team
of Clifford engineers. What made this welded wire fencing
product unique, was that the horizontal wires were not
only welded close together, making it extremely difficult
to climb the fence, but the horizontal wires needed to be
welded on both sides of the vertical wires. This produced
a much more rigid panel, that would stand up better to
high winds, was easier to install and did not loose any of its
“anti-climb” advantages. Part of the challenge was to weld
crosswires above and below the linewires, but this was
only the first challenge. When making large mesh panels
with crosswires close together, a lot of heat and therefore
distortion is introduce into the mesh panel. A distorted
panel was unacceptable, as the customer demanded very
flat and square panels. To achieve this, Clifford developed
a multi-level stretching device to put the crosswires under
tension during welding. This dramatically improved prod-

chanical properties as well as the design of the weld.

Spring coilers are the heart and soul of any spring
making operation. They quickly and quietly crank out
springs in a virtually infinite number of combinations
of wire diameter, spring diameter, free length, num-
ber of coils, etc. As the name implies, spring coiling
machines, both mechanical and computer controlled,
make coiled springs in all sorts of sizes, shapes and
materials.
According to How Products Are Made1, coiled springs
were developed in the early 15th century by clock
makers. The Industrial Revolution in the 18th and
19 th centuries spurred the development of mass-
production techniques including ones for making
springs. A British locksmith, Joseph Bramah, is
credited with making a spring winding machine by
modifying a lathe in which a reel of wire was used
in place of a cutting head. “Wire from the reel was
wrapped around a rod secured in the lathe. The speed
of the lead screw, which carried the reel parallel to the
spinning rod, could be adjusted to vary the spacing
of the spring’s coils.” Today, springs can be coiled at
room temperature with or without the use of a rod
or mandrel to form the coiled shape. Larger diameter
wire springs can be coiled into springs after the wire
is heated to make it flexible, which is called hot wind-
ing or hot coiling.
The fundamental process for coiling springs has not
changed dramatically over the years, but there are
many new features and capabilities available from the
companies that make the spring coilers that populate
the floors of spring-making factories all around the
