NESMA finished off 2022 on a high note as member-

by our annual meeting and awards ceremony on De-

that other states are considering similar positions. His
message rested squarely on building availability of our

Mechanical Testing of
Steel Reinforcement Concrete-reinforcing steel is manufactured from a long
product and its surface shape varies according to the
manufacturing standard.
The specimen has a constant cross-section over its
length. In addition, the specimen’s shape must be
straight without curvature. Specimens with curvature
must be straightened before testing.
The cross-section of the specimen is significant for ten-
sile tests. To determine the cross-section, the length
of the specimen is measured, and it is weighed. The
cross-section is then mathematically calculated from
these values.
Determination of physical characteristics in a classic

low tensile strength, it is reinforced with embedded re-
inforcing steel. Steel reinforcement is divided into re-
inforcing bars (rebar), reinforcing wire rod, reinforcing
wire and welded mats and lattices.
Reinforcing bars are steel products with a circular or
nearly circular cross-section that are used for the re-

gauge-length (provided multiple markings are present).
This can be particularly advantageous if, for example,
the specimen breaks outside of the initially set meas-
urement range. By using the strain distribution func-
tion, this can even be done live during test straining,
meaning the initial gauge length will be moved auto-
matically to the area with the highest strain. This en-
sures that specimen break always occurs withing the
gauge length. Thanks to this function, the number of
failed attempts can be greatly reduced, saving not only
time but also money (specimen material).

7. Coiled and Straight
Bar Stirrup Machines
Rebar comes in two forms from
the mill, coiled and straight bar.
The type and amount of work
you are supporting may affect if
you use coiled or straight stock
only. Stirrup machines can re-
duce operator hours and automate the cut and bend
process. But is a straight bar or coil machine best for
you? If you need to cut and bend #4 (12 mm) stirrups
all day long, coils may make sense (Figure 4). Coiled
stock can reduce scrap if you are running the same
bar size all day long and not switching back and forth
between bar diameters. However, change over and
straightening the bar can reduce efficiency.
If you switch bar sizes throughout the day, a straight
bar machine may be best (Figure 5). There is no need
to straighten the bar and the cost of entry for a straight

bar machine is typically less. However, there may be
more scrap as there is a remnant leftover. Perhaps a
combination machine that can run both coiled and
straight stock is the answer. Your rebar fabrication
OEM should help you determine the best machine
based on your requirements.

8. Selecting an OEM
Be sure to select an equipment manufacturer who has
the tools and can assist you in planning your shop. The
OEM should have a complete line of rebar fabrication

Robot for the Automatic
Removal of Rebar Stirrups

Robot heads incorporate automatic grippers
Industriestrasse 10A that can be used to remove various length

The new robot Capto for picking up rebars was pre-

sented at bauma in Munich by Pedax GmbH. Pedax
takes the next step towards full automation of its
systems with advanced automation.
The prototype version went into operation at Norsk
Stål at the end of 2021. The robot heads are equipped
with automatic grippers that can be used to remove
shapes of different lengths at an angle of 90°. Robots
can then be place within robot cells or stacks at pre-
defined positions. In order to store compact hangers,
big bags or mobile trolleys, gathering them together
is recommended. Additionally, if you don’t want to
disturb ongoing production, you can hang the stirrups
either on a conveyor belt or on a rotatable wall bar.
With the new generation, the Capto is able to set the
angle between the two grippers from 90° to 180° with-
out manual adjustments by the operator. If the stirrups
have other angles or lengths, the robot system can also
automatically process complete order lists. As a result
of this flexibility, Capto is able to adjust this station
with sophisticated mechanics. Capto approaches the
adjustment station, proceed to adjust the new angle,
engages the grippers again and then locks the station
in place for the new set of stirrups to be processed.
Until now, gripper positions had to be defined for
each new shape. As a result of the robot calculating

Digital Tool Helps Shot-Blast Machines Run Smoothly
Wheelabrator’s digital tool tracks and displays the overall effectiveness of a shot-blast machine in its wider production
context. It enables operators to identify issues and bottlenecks that cause their blast machines to run below optimum, with
a view to continuously perfect production and save time, money and resources. The tool is particularly useful in highly
integrated settings with in-line shot-blast machines (i.e., advanced moulding lines), where all parts of the line have to be in
tune with one another to achieve maximum performance
and efficiency. The tool, called “Machine Effectiveness”,
was developed in conjunction with Wheelabrator’s Digital
Lab on the group’s equipment-agnostic IIoT platform,
Monitizer. Wheelabrator’s tool provides its user with in-
stant access to information to identify bottlenecks, reduce
idle time and operate the machine ever more efficiently
and productively. It can be retrofitted really easily for
an instant performance boost. To deploy this or any of
its other digital tools, Wheelabrator can digitally enable
virtually any type of shot-blast machine, new or old, us-

High-End Bending Machine Offers Increased Output

WAFIOS AG, Reutlingen, Germany, offers increased bending machine output
thanks to innovative drive technology combined with WAFIOS’ iQsmartbend.
Highest working speeds can be achieved with the mass-optimized bending head.
And with iQsmartbend (already included in the basic price of the BM HS series
as a five-year license), the CNC high-end wire bending machines can achieve
up to 40% higher output. iQsmartbend is the further development of iQbend,
the solution patented in numerous countries
to avoid the whip effect. Process-related vi-
brations during bending are suppressed by
automatically adjusting the tool motion profiles via on-line interface to WAFIOS. The con-
nection to the WAFIOS cluster is only required during the calculation. Only the required
geometry and motion profiles are transferred. Increase in output and quality improvement
with iQsmartbend can be realized across the entire component spectrum and contribute
to a reduction in unit costs. www.wafios.com

Straightening and Cutting Machine With Automatic Tying & Labelling

American Progress Group provides the industry with the TWIN MSR straight-
ening and cutting machine with automatic tying and labelling. The Twin MSR
straightening and cutting machine processes reinforcing steel just-in-time
and directly from coil. The machine can process diameters from 8 to 20 mm
from coil, is equipped with two rotors per diameter and is characterized by
an extremely fast diameter change. It works with a special flap system and
bending heads with a new type of construction. The reels also offer a better
overview with a special set-up and greater ease of operation with the single
wire cut-off. The current solution for bending automation also offers an in-
novative logistics system for fully automatic binding and labelling of the bars.
The automatic tying and labelling system quickly and precisely combine the
rods into small and large bundles—another major step towards increasing the
level of automation in rebar shops. The system provides automatic bundling of
small and large bundles, automatic tying and labelling of individual positions
and commissions, no employee needed for this work step and removal robot
at the automatic bending machine. Anthropomorphic robots are use by the
TWIN MSR straightening and cutting machine, and the machine operator is
then responsible for the material flow of one or more machines. For additional
technical specifications on the TWIN MSR straightening and cutting machine,

Quick Grinding for short Wire Sections & Straightening/Cutting of Thin Wires
Jouhsen-bündgens Maschinenbau GmbH, Stolberg, Germany, provides manufacturers
with the PrecisionGrind PG3 and PG11 for grinding short needle sections. These grinding
machines offer efficient quick grinding for short wire sections. The PG3 and PG11 needle
grinding machines are designed to process sections from 20 mm in length and between
0.25 and 2.50 mm in diameter. Customers using these machines for point grinding on short
sections save time and material. Both needle grinding machines use a magazine system to
convey the parts to and from the grinder. This process is automatic and requires no op-
erating personnel. The only manual process is the
replacement of the magazine. Also available from
Jouhsen-bündgens Maschinenbau GmbH is the
PrecisionCut UD0, which is a straightening and cut-
ting machine engineered for particularly thin wires.
Capable of both straightening and cutting wires
measuring from 0.05 to 1.5 mm in diameter and
from 3 to 3000 mm in length, the PrecisionCut UD0
is particularly well-suited to medical applications.

Tumble Belt Blast Machine for Spring Coating Preparation

Shot blasting is the most common pre-treatment technology to prepare the surface of technical springs for subsequent
coating operations. In a manufacturing line for compression springs, this cleaning operation takes place in a tumble belt
blast machine from Rösler Metal Finishing USA, LLC, Battle Creek, MI, USA. Within short cycle times, the custom-
engineered RMBC 4.2-HD produces surfaces that are perfectly prepared for the subsequent coating operation. Oil carried
into the shot blast process, is neutralized and through the media cleaning
system, separated from the blast media. The RMBC 4.2-HD is equipped
with special technical features. It allows the blast cleaning of complete
batches of loosely tumbling compression springs with batch weights of
up to 1000 kg. Two Gamma 300G turbines, each equipped with a power
of 11 kW, ensure a high shot blast intensity. These turbines are equipped
with curved throwing blades in “Y” design. And compared to conven-
tional turbines, the specially calculated blade curvature generates very
high media throwing speeds, resulting in an up to 20% higher blast per-
formance, and consequently, shorter cycle times. And all this is achieved
with a lower energy consumption. Moreover, the special “Y” design of the
throwing blades allows the use of both blade sides. This practically doubles
the usable life of the throwing blades. A quick-change system permits a
quick blade change without the need for dismounting the turbine from
its housing. www.rosler.com

Revolutionary Bending Concept for Production of Electric Motor Hairpins

WAFIOS AG, Reutlingen, Germany, offers the SpeedFormer, for production of hairpins for the latest generation of electric
motors. The SpeedFormer is the first machine to unite three proven bending techniques from conventional wire and tube
bending machines in one system. One of the bending methods has
been used for decades in WAFIOS CNC spring and wire formers
and has been modified/optimized for bending hairpins. It is used
for simple hairpin bends and enables highest production speeds.
A second bending technique is based on the rotary-draw bending
technique for tubes. It is used for making complicated bends with
overlapping geometry elements as they occur at the head of hairpins
(S shapes). And in the so-called “twisting” process—the third of the
three bending techniques—the feed unit is rotated in such a way that
a defined twist of the hairpin legs can be produced. This is essential
for the precise fit of the hairpins in the stator and for ideal electric motor manufacture. www.wafios.com

Everything Starts From a Spark

Lara Reen of IDEAL-Werk C. + E. Jungeblodt GmbH
+ Co. KG, Lippstadt, Germany, says, “With the motto
‘Everything starts from a spark. Since 1923, the solu-
tion provider for your welding task’, IDEAL-Werk
starts the year on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.
Innovative, world-open and sustainable, the entire
IDEAL family presents itself and presents the latest
and most exciting topics.
“Sustainability, effectiveness and flexibility—the
implementation of the concept takes place in the
machine type CSR. The CSR is a modular NC weld-
ing machine for welding products of one fixture
placed on a rotary table with two machining sides.
Effective multiple assignment of fixtures in the freely
programmable working area is possible to increase
efficiency. It is noteworthy that products can be both
two-dimensional and three-dimensional in design.
“The machine concept is based on the new welding
concept—sustainability—without using the com-
pressed air provided by the customer. The compressed
air is used exclusively for static drives in the rotary
table area. The welding units, which consist of an up-
per and a lower NC device, are individually controlled
via the machine control. Compact customer-specific ICSR 102 NC (above) and STS 020 (below).
applications often result in multiple placement of
NC welding units on the upper and lower consoles.
The highest degree of flexibility is achieved by the
individual use of the NC units. In addition, there are
no interfering edges that arise in programming due
to fixture construction. Only the NC units in use are
in the fixture construction for welding.
“It is worth mentioning that different welding tasks
can be performed within one production run. A speed
advantage of approximately 15% is also guaranteed by
this use of the components. Furthermore, the storage
of pneumatics as consumption is reduced to approxi-
mately 80% and leakages in the systems are a thing of
the past. Effectiveness in terms of sustainability was
proven in cooperation with the Hamm-Lippstadt
University. The double-press welding process is
mainly used in wire drawing plants, stretching and
drawing lines. With the DD0 104 double-press welding
machine, as well as the STS 020 from IDEAL-Werk,
the heat-affected material made of iron or non-ferrous
metal is almost completely forced out of the welding
zone after the welding process. This improves the me-
chanical properties as well as the design of the weld.
“With the STS or DD0 type series, high welding quality
and enormous strength can be achieved. At the same

heavy electric vehicles (EV).
With the ever-popular increase in
EVs, road cars are increasing in

Spotlight On Spring Coiling

Wire Forming Technology International

Spring coilers are the heart and soul of any spring

making operation. They quickly and quietly crank out
springs in a virtually infinite number of combinations
of wire diameter, spring diameter, free length, num-
ber of coils, etc. As the name implies, spring coiling
machines, both mechanical and computer controlled,
make coiled springs in all sorts of sizes, shapes and

Email: sales@adtradingllc.com 19 th centuries spurred the development of mass-
production techniques including ones for making
springs. A British locksmith, Joseph Bramah, is
credited with making a spring winding machine by
modifying a lathe in which a reel of wire was used
in place of a cutting head. “Wire from the reel was
wrapped around a rod secured in the lathe. The speed
of the lead screw, which carried the reel parallel to the
spinning rod, could be adjusted to vary the spacing
of the spring’s coils.” Today, springs can be coiled at
room temperature with or without the use of a rod
or mandrel to form the coiled shape. Larger diameter
wire springs can be coiled into springs after the wire
is heated to make it flexible, which is called hot wind-
