Learning Competency #4: Relate the shape of a volcano’s cone to its composition.
(Grade 8, Quarter 3 Earth and Space Science)

““The shape of a volcano’s cone is related to its composition. However, this topic can
be used as well as an activity to teach students geometry through designing, constructing, and
presenting 3D models of volcanos that erupt. Provide the students with a given number of
small cups for the volcano’s base, cardboard and glue for the cone shape, baking soda and
vinegar for the lava, and colors to make the model visually pleasing. Group the students, and
assign each group to create their designated volcano shape type. By using different sizes,
angles, and base shapes for their models, they can then erupt them with baking soda and
vinegar to see how the volcano's form is influenced by its composition.””
