Ss304 Class 1
Ss304 Class 1
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SCOPE
A. This specification covers 304L stainless steel piping. Threading is an option for small bore
construction in NPS 1/2 – 2 [See Para. 1.4 (A)]. Applications are limited to utility services such
as water, compressed air and nitrogen running in areas where:
• External corrosion prohibits the use of carbon steel or galvanized piping (such as acetylation
through hydrolysis areas of film and fiber departments in CE division at TED)
• Product purity is essential (such as demineralized water)
B. Design Limits based on ASME B16.3 class 150 stainless steel threaded fittings and ASME B16.5
Class 150 ASTM A182-F304L stainless steel flanges, and on Eastman’s temperature limits on
gaskets:

PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 Type 316 stainless steel is shown for some of the following piping items instead of 304 or 304L
because 316 is generally more readily available or stocked by the owner. Type 304 and 304L
may be substituted. Also, it is generally best to limit the number of different items used.

NOTES:
02 Pipe Bending: NPS 8 (metric DN 200) and smaller (minimum schedule 10S pipe) may be cold bent
in place of using welding elbows, unless otherwise stated in project instructions. The design may
show bends with 1.5D and larger bend radii as a means of reducing welds. See Specification
15480.0101, "Piping, Cold Bending".
03 Schedule 40S is minimum thickness SS pipe that is allowed to be threaded. Thread & couple
NPS 1/2 thru 2 as required. Thread cutting tools must be renewed often to produce good quality
cuts on SS pipe. Proper threading practice is a must.
05 Thread sealant/compound shall be used on all thread joints unless seal welding is used. Refer to
Specification 15480.0208.
06 See Para. 1.4 (A) on threaded piping.
07 The 2H steel nuts may be used with 410 SS bolts where galling is a concern.
09 Use special spacer ring that fits outside the diameter of stub end lap ring or raised face of flange to
convert lap joint and other raised face flanges to full face when matching to flat faced Class 125
iron valve or equipment connection.
10 Use flat face flange or use lap joint or other raised face flange with spacer ring and a full face
gasket with Class 125 CI valve or equipment connection (see Note 9).
11 Orifice flange w/threaded taps may be substituted.
14 Line blinds, spacers, restricting orifices, and spectacle blinds shall be per Standard Detail
15480.2502.
15 Use hex head bolts with lug style valves.
16 Weld flange stops to pipe or stub end equally spaced & within 1/2-inch (13mm) of lap joint flange
backside.
18 Conical strainer to be used as temporary strainer at pumps.
19 Install in horizontal position with cover up or in vertical position with upward flow.
21 Install in horizontal position with hinge pin vertical or in vertical position with upward flow.
22 These items have no flanges but are installed between line flanges with extra length bolts.
23 Only use where external corrosion does not rule out the use of carbon steel or alloy steel
components.
24 Install in horizontal position or in vertical position with upward flow.
35 Install special tag as illustrated in Standard Detail 15480.2504 to show location of valve and
direction of flow (Unless supplied by manufacturer).
39 Low strength bolts are required in joints with Class 125 cast iron flanges where a full face gasket
is not used.
40 Valve to be used for diverting only and not for sealing. Used for cooling water recirculation.
81 Integrally reinforced branch connections, tees, and reducing tees are permitted as an acceptable
alternative branch connection.
F7 The designer shall consider the cost advantage of using stainless steel blind flanges in favor of
lined carbon steel blind flanges in the smaller sizes. For stainless steel, NPS ≤ 8 are typical cost
effective sizes. Typically, larger size carbon steel blind flanges with liners are more economical.
F38 Do not use 410 SS in coastal sites.
G1 Use hardened washer with 1-inch & larger flange nuts, and where needed to apply a more uniform
bolt torque and/or lower friction contact for the nut or bolt head. Washers are recommended

3.6 CLEANING
A. See Specification 15480.0500, "Piping, General Cleaning"
3.7 PRECAUTION
A. Nitrogen is an inert non-toxic gas that will not support life and is therefore an asphyxiation
hazard. Care must be taken to prevent releases, such as relief valve discharges, into enclosed
spaces. Nitrogen hose stations must be plainly labeled "NITROGEN-ASPHYXIATION
HAZARD".
