1.4 DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
A. WARNING - Excessive pressure will build up in steam traced piping that has fluid blocked
between valves without relief. Refer to Technical Report 95-5200-019 "Investigation of
Extrusion Failures of PTFE Based Gaskets in Pipe Line Flanges."
B. See 15480.S108 for similar specification with graphite-filled spiral wound gaskets.
C. See specification 15480.S155, which has graphite packing and gaskets, for Acetate Tow Dope
piping beyond the 4th stage filter press (final filtration).
D. Acetate tow manufacturing prohibits the use of any fluoropolymers, such as PTFE and PTFE
materials using trade names such as "Teflon" and "Viton", to be in direct contact with the acetate
tow dope and tow fibers as restricted per Specification 15480.0001, Para. 1.6(G).
E. cGMP Requirements - Pharmaceutical, Food and Feed Grade piping shall comply with Current
Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) guidelines. Pipe and piping components, including
gaskets, shall not contain materials that are hazardous for human consumption. Design safety,
hazards and cross contamination issues shall be addressed with regards to proper piping materials,
systems design/layout and cleaning. For cGMP guidelines and piping requirements, see cGMP
Piping Requirements Policy and Guidelines: SOP Number: EAST-GMP-DIV-21.
F. Alloy Blinds vs. Lined Carbon Steel Blind Flanges - The designer shall consider the cost
advantage of using alloy blind flanges in favor of alloy lined carbon steel blind flanges in the
smaller sizes. For stainless steel, NPS ≤ 8 are typical cost effective sizes. Larger size stainless
steel blind flanges are not normally considered economical. Caution: The pressure rating is
limited by certain alloy blind flanges permitted by this specification. See notes 7 and 7a for
reduced ratings for 316L and 304/304L stainless steel flanges.

NOTES:
02 Pipe Bending: NPS 8 (metric DN 200) and smaller (minimum schedule 10S pipe) may be cold bent
in place of using welding elbows, unless otherwise stated in project instructions. See Specification
15480.0101, “Piping, Cold Bending” for requirements that shall be followed.
03 Use with old sch 5S pipe (used prior to 1993).
04 Stainless steel blind flanges in the smaller sizes typically have a cost advantage of over the lined
carbon steel flanges. Larger size stainless steel blind flanges are not normally considered
economical. Sizes outside those listed may be used. See Para. 1.4(F).
05 Sheet gasket is for site cutting, specials and odd connections.
06 Threaded items should be limited for use after terminal valves at vent and drain assemblies, pressure
and temperature connections, connections to equipment, etc. Primary runs of piping are to be
welded so that schedule 10S pipe can be used rather than sch 40S. Thread cutting tools must be

renewed often to produce good quality cuts on SS pipe. Proper threading practice is a must. See
Standard Details 13420-025 & -026 for measurement & controls special connections.
07 Reduce ratings of 316L SST flanges by multiplying the design limits listed in Para. 1.1.b by the
following:
0.84 at temp. = -20 to 100°F 0.83 at temp. = 200°F
0.81 at temp. = 300°F 0.82 at temp. = 350°F
07a Reduce ratings of 304/304L SST flanges by multiplying the design limits listed in Para. 1.1.b by the
following:
1.00 at temp. = -20 to 100°F 0.98 at temp. = 200°F
0.95 at temp. = 300°F 0.96 at temp. = 350°F
08 Reducing flange shall only be used as shown on design, such as at well pipes and to match reducing
flanges.
09 Provide flat face flanges adjacent to flat face valves and equipment nozzles.
10 The A194-2H steel nuts may be used with 410 SS bolts where galling is a concern.
11 Use special spacer ring that fits outside the diameter of stub end lap ring where matching to flat
faced Class 125 iron valve.
12 Install in horizontal or vertical with upward flow.
13 Provide full-face gaskets at flat face flanges.
14 Line blinds, spacers, spectacle blinds, and restricting orifices shall be per Standard Detail
15480.2502.
15 Use hex head bolt with lug style valves.
16 Weld flange stops to pipe or stub end equally spaced & within 1/2 – inch (13 mm) of lap joint flange
backside.
17 Install in horizontal position or in vertical position with upward flow.
18 Conical Strainer to be used as temporary start-up strainer at pumps.
19 Install in horizontal position with cover up or in vertical position with upward flow.
20 Thread sealant/compound to be used on all thread joints except if seal welding is used. Refer to
Specification 15480.0208.
21 Install in horizontal position with hinge pin vertical or in vertical position with upward flow.
22 These items have no flanges but are installed between line flanges with extra length bolts.
28 Use with orifice taps.
32 May be used for relief valve changeover.
34 For sampling connection.
35 Install special tag as illustrated in Standard Detail 15480.2504 to show location of valve and
direction of flow (Unless supplied by manufacturer).
36 For steam and condensate.
37 For special acetic acetate dope (Acid Dope) applications requiring self-cleaning scraper seat.
38 Class 300 to be for connection to equipment and control valves.
40 A 304 SS flange is typically cheaper than a 316 SS flange.
41 For brine service in a corrosive atmosphere such as C.E.
81 Integrally reinforced branch connections, tees, and reducing tees are permitted as an acceptable
alternative branch connection.
82 For PTFE restriction and food grade requirements for Acetate Tow manufacturing, see
Specification 15480.0001, Para. 1.6(G).
F7 Larger size carbon steel blind flanges with liners are typically more economical than stainless
steel blind flanges. See Para. 1.4(F).
F38 Do not use 410 SS in coastal sites.
G1 Use hardened washer with 1-inch & larger flange nuts, and where needed to apply a more uniform
bolt torque and/or lower friction contact for the nut or bolt head. Washers are recommended

V3 Cast valves specifying an increased casting quality factor of 1.00 per ASME B31.3 or used in
Critical Service, Very Critical Service, or Category M Service per ASME B31.3 shall be in
compliance with EES PNSM0110 A, Section 7.4.
V15 New ram valves to be per design. Contact the Owner's Valve Specialists for valve selections and
specifications.
V19 Valves which are to be installed in insulated piping systems shall have extended stems, extended
bonnets, or raised operating handles with lockout capabilities which will allow full insulation plus
hand clearance of approximately 3-inches (76 mm).
V35 Check valves shall be sized according to operating/process conditions - not line size. Critical
applications include turbulent flow, flow fluctuation and flow rates that result in a less than a fully
open valve disk. Consult manufacturer’s specifications for correct sizing.
V37 Pressure and temperature rating limited by certain components permitted by this specification.
Valves must comply with pressure/temperature limitations listed in the Eastman valve purchase
description.
V41 The straight through bore of valves shall be checked to ensure sufficient clearance prior to being
selected for applications such as hot tapping, component insertion, etc. Valve manufacturers vary
bore configurations and sizes. Consult manufacturer’s specifications for specific bore
configuration, dimensions and clearance.
V42 Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for proper installation of valves including cautions on
weld end assembly, orientation, and disassembly.
V52 Valve should only be used in applications requiring fire safe components.
V53 Designed for Diketene Service.
V54 For services where trapped fluid can expand between the valve seats generating excessive
pressure that can damage a valve and prevent operation.
