Choose the answer that best fits the blank
The generation that bows its head and studies day and night in China is waking up
uo Gang couldn't find a job during this summer's recruitment season for graduate students in China.
Z
That makes her lose confidence and doubt her world view.
Like many young Chinese people, the 25-year-old girl was raised from childhood to be a "good
student". Teachers and parents always taught her that as long as she followed the rules and studied
hard, money and success would naturally come.
Obedient to his teachers and parents, Zuo Gang passed many exams and won a place at a prestigious
university in Beijing (China) before graduating from high school.
After that, everything got worse. When Zuo was aboutto complete her college graduation,
she sent a series of job applications to many businesses but did not receive any response.
or Zuo, defeat came as a fatal blow. After many years of "grinding on history", she never thought
F
she would be unemployed. She struggled with anxiety, insomnia, and feelings of guilt towards her
parents and teachers for months on end.
Finally, she realized, not being able to find a job was not her fault. China's economy is still recovering
from the Covid-19 pandemic, the job market is increasingly fierce and millions of graduates face
similar challenges.
"I don't think I made a mistake in planning my career. In contrast to my parents' generation, today
working hard alone no longer guarantees success," Zuo told Sixth Tone.
Zuo found that the "good student mentality" that families and teachers impose on young people has
caused this generation to be deceived. With the current difficult economy, even top graduates are
having difficulty finding suitable jobs.
Good students like Zuo tend to be partiiicularly vulnerable to mental health problems
Many other young Chinese people also share their frustrations when finding jobs. In January this
ear, Zuo founded a group on social networks called "Victims of good student psychology". This
y
group quickly attracted more than 80,000 members and developed into a support channel for
unemployed young people.
New members of the group take an assessment devised by Zuo to determine the symptoms of "good
student mentality" they suffer from. Excessive submission to authority, losing oneself in the pursuit
of achievements, the habit of doubting oneself about small mistakes... are common symptoms.
The group then offers to help its members escape this mentality and accept a new identity as "free
people". Many posts by young Chinese document their efforts to become "free people" or share tips
on how to stop judging themselves based on society's conventional measures of success.
The pressure of not daring to make mistakes. In theWest, studies have consistently found that
igh achievers are more likely to suffer from anxiety, depression and substance abuse problems.
h
more exciting than friends.
Competition in the education system is fierce and the pressure to achieve excellent grades begins at a
young age. Even though the government tries to reduce the burden on students, the country is still
seeing a large number of students suffering from anxiety.
"Many parents have exceptionally high expectations for their children. Even when a student scores
98/100 on a test, parents only focus on the 2 missing points instead of praising their child. ", Liu Zhen
- child psychologist at the Shanghai Mental Health Center, China - told Sixth Tone.
Over time, students apply the evaluation criteria of the outside world as a measure for their own
self-assessment. If not treated, these problems will have lifelong consequences.
Increased anxiety
uo instilled the "good grades, good life" mentality as a child. Growing up in a small town in China,
Z
she always craved the approval of her teachers. At school, the top students are the most popular, and
the kids with low scores are constantly ridiculed.
One day, Zuo remembers going to her math teacher after school to seek help. Not only did the teacher
refuse to help, but he also scolded her for not paying attention to the lecture. Then, in the next class,
the teacher called Zuo to answer the same question. When she couldn't do it, the teacher made fun of
her studies in front of the whole class.
Zuo recalls, scenes of being ridiculed in class happened often. Feeling disrespected, she learned to
keep quiet and not ask questions. When she finished high school, the instinct to become an obedient
student and get straight A's was "ingrained" in her.
"Those experiences instilled in me the belief that even a small mistake in homework is unacceptable,
as it can have serious consequences for my life," Zuo said. .
