Speaking Examination

Note to Examiner:

The cards on the last page are to be copied, cut up and given to
candidates in Part B of the examination.

Candidates are also to be given notepaper and a pencil in


Part B.
Speaking
Candidates must answer ALL parts

The following is a script to be read aloud by the Examiner on the recording.


Anything in square brackets […] requires specific details to be added.
The bold pieces of text are instructions to the Examiner that should not be read
aloud.

Begin the recording now.

This is the Advanced English Language Framework speaking examination. The candidate
is [candidate’s full name] and the candidate’s number is [candidate’s NCC Education
candidate number]. The examiner is [examiner’s full name]

There are THREE (3) parts to this examination. Part A involves some questions about
everyday topics. It will take about THREE (3) minutes. In Part B, you will have to speak for
up to TWO (2) minutes about a topic. You will have ONE (1) minute to prepare for this. In
Part C, you have to answer some more general questions about the same topic as in Part
B. Part C takes about three minutes.

Begin timing THREE (3) minutes for Part A now. Choose TWO (2) or THREE (3) of the
following topics and ask all THREE (3) questions from the chosen topics. Begin with
Topic 1, then choose 2 or 3 of Topics 2-5. Do not go over THEE (3) minutes for this
section. Choose a fourth topic only if the candidate finishes THREE (3) topics in
less than TWO (2) minutes. Introduce each topic with a phrase like “Now let’s talk
about…”, “Next I’d like to ask you about…” etc.

Ask the ‘Why (not)?’ questions when necessary.

Free time

1 What do you like to do in your free time?

2 How much free time do you have?

3 What would you do if you had more free time?

Dream job

1 What would your dream job be? Why?

2 Would you prefer to work with other people or alone? Why?

3 Would you prefer an interesting job or a job with a high salary? Why?

Topic 3
The Internet

1 Tell me about a website which you visit often.

2 Do you think you spend too much time on the Internet? Why (not)?

3 Is it important for children to learn how to use the Internet? Why (not)?

Topic 4
An animal

1 What is your favourite animal?

2 Do many people in your country have pets? Why (not)?

3 Should animals be kept in zoos? Why (not)?

Topic 5
Shopping for food

1 How often do you go shopping for food?

2 Is it better to buy food every day or to buy a lot of food once a week?

3 Do you prefer to cook or to eat in restaurants and cafes?

Part B

Now we’re moving on to Part B. I am going to give you a topic. You have to speak about
this topic for up to TWO (2) minutes. I will tell you when the time is up. First, you have
ONE (1) minute to prepare. You can take notes if you wish. Here’s a pencil and some
notepaper.

Pass the notepaper and a pencil to the candidate.

Choose ONE (1) of the TWO (2) cards and pass it to the candidate.

Here is your topic. Read the first sentence of the topic, starting ‘Talk about…’

Your ONE (1) -minute preparation time begins now.

Start timing ONE (1) minute. At the end of this minute say:

The preparation time is up. You can start speaking now.

Start timing TWO (2) minutes. If the candidate finishes considerably before one
minute is up, say:

You still have some time. Can you say some more?

When the TWO (2) minutes are up, or if the candidate finishes before this, say:

OK. Can I take the pencil and paper and card back, please?

Take these back.

Part C - 3 minutes

Now we’re moving on to Part C. I will ask you some more general questions about this
topic.

You might only need THREE (3) or FOUR (4) of these questions to fill the THREE (3)
minutes. If candidates do not develop their answers fully, ask questions such as
‘Why -?’ or ‘How -?’ to get candidates to give more details.

3 Which are the most important celebrations in your country?

4 Do children receive too many gifts nowadays?

5 Can people still enjoy parties and celebrations as they get older?

6 Do you think gift giving will become less important in the future?

You can use the following questions to help you:

What happened there?
How did you feel?

You can also give other information.

Describe a gift you have received.
