1. INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this document is to describe a specific safe working method which
will be used for trenching, it gives details of how the work will be carried out and
what health and safety issues and controls are involved at the project.

2. RESPONSIBILITY

1.1 Site Manager (SM)

Site Manager is responsible for the overall supervision of activities carried out
during this work execution and for verification of application and implementation
of this procedure.

1.2 Site Civil Engineer (SCE)

Site Civil Engineer reports to SM and is responsible for all execution activities
related to the trenching works at site. He/she is also responsible to verify the
availability of the required material in accordance with this procedure.

1.3 QC Inspector (QCI)

QC Inspector is responsible for the day to day quality related activities including
the coordination with Civil Engineer, preparation and issue of required quality
records for trenching activities.

3. Machinery& Hand Tools

- Wheel back hoe

- Cruller Excavator (if needed)
- Wheel front Loader
- Dump truck
- Steel 1-ton roller
- Hand operated compacter
- Water tanker
- Excavation hand tools (shovels, trimmer, hammer/jackhammer and chisels ...etc.)

4. GENERAL SCOPE

The general trenching materials shall include of all the necessary materials,
equipment, and labours to perform trenching/ and backfilling and probing to locate
and survey existing underground facilities and surrounding grade elevations. The
survey shall be performed in accordance with Client Drawings/specifications.

Geodetic Parameters Shall coordinates with Client and use caution when trenching
for underground pipe routings. Hand trenching will be required in most areas to avoid
damaging any existing underground facilities.

5. TRENCHING

The trenching operation is to Covers excavation by hand for facilities and around
existing facilities such as foundations, pipe, equipment, etc. It includes excavation to
the specified depths.

The trenching operation is to trench the area with different excavation as required, the
trench excavation equipment (e.g. Shovels, pickaxes, and other hand tools will suffice
for minor excavations) shall be capable of excavating a trench.

6. PROCEDURE

 Call the Client representative so that underground electric, water, and

communications pipes and cables can be spotted, to protect people from
injury or liability in the event they are damaged.
 Get the equipment that will be used to do the digging. Shovels, pickaxes, and
other hand tools will suffice for minor excavations, but renting a
miniexcavator can save a lot of work on large jobs. Backhoes and even
trackhoes may be needed if the project requires a very deep and/or long
trench.
 Remove any vegetation to save and replace when the project is finished.
Small plants, even turf grasses, can be removed and stored for replanting with
proper care.
 Remove the topsoil to a depth of 10-20cm, depending on depth of the topsoil
layer. Store the topsoil away from other spoil material to avoid contamination.
Ensure that the topsoil heap does not exceed 1 - 1.5m in height to avoid
compaction. For the same reason the topsoil heap should either be demarcated
or placed away from frequent foot or vehicular traffic. If the topsoil is going
to be stored for prolonged periods of time over-seed with non-invasive grass
species to reduce erosion.
 Begin the digging. Line workers or equipment up with the ditch line, and start
to dig. Be careful to observe soil conditions so that the trench embankments
do not yield, allowing them to cave in.
 Dig first cut to the enoughdepth to serve the purpose of the trench, or if the
trench needs to be benched, to the depth of the first bench. If using a piece of
equipment such as a backhoe or excavator, dig the first trench segment the
machine will reach to this depth. Make subsequent entrenchments to the
depth of each bench prior to digging deeper, so the banks of each bench will
remain stable throughout the process.
 Throw, or cast, the spoil (the removed soil) as far from the excavation as
possible, while installing the utilities or doing whatever work in the trench it
has been dug for. This will also prevent the removed material from creating
an overburdening of the trench's banks (or sides).
 Move along the length of trench as each section is excavated to the required
depth. Checking the depth with a laser level or builder's level where the grade
is critical will ensure the finished trench does not require remedial work to
make it usable.

 Continue digging until the whole trench is complete. Recheck the depth of
the trench, check the embankments for stability, and do any smoothing or
finished grading of the trench bottom necessary to allow installing the
material the trench has been dug for.
 Install the material the trench is dug for. In the examples (pipeline), the
trench was dug to relocate an ATT telephone cable from an area where
construction would ultimately render it useless. The trench will likely serve
another purpose, such as a drainage system for a cellar, or a sanitary sewer or
storm sewer installation.
 Backfill the trench. For deep trenches, backfilling in lifts (layers), and
compacting the material as it is placed will reduce the amount of settling that
will occur after the project is completed.
 Replace topsoil as soon as all the spoil has been back-filled. This will ensure
fertile soil and easy re vegetation without having to resort to costly fertilizers.
 Regrade and re landscape the area after connecting any utilities.
 Our goal is to do it safely, do it quickly and do it right the first time. We
believe our safety and training programs.
 A stairway, ladder, ramp or other safe means of egress shall be located in
trench excavations that are 4 feet or more in depth so as to require no more
than 25 feet of lateral travel for employees
 Hand trenching will be required in most areas to avoid damaging any existing
underground facilities
 Machine excavation shall be required in most area wherever its freefrom
underground facilities specific that we have deep trenching
 Excavated material is automatically processed and ready to use as backfill,
unless mensioned otherwise or as refer to QC/QA instructions and
specifications requirements .
 The estimated location of utility installations, such as sewer, water, electrical
service lines, etc., which may be affected shall be determined prior to
opening an excavation. As the excavation approaches the estimated location,
the actual location shall be verified by safe and acceptable means. Local
utilities departments should be contacted before starting the trenching and
excavation operations.
 When reach the required depth ,leveling and compact the grade as
compacting procedure mentioned in bacfilling should be their to give final
ready grade of trench .

7. HSE Requirement

All equipment shall be fallowing the safety regulations indicted in HSE project and
all the labors and the drivers will be committing with the PPE's and signs and all the
safety issue and fallow the direction of the supervisor engineer to avoid any accident
and incident.

 Working space, de-watering, additional excavation for safetyrequirements and/or

any form of shoring
 All surface encumbrances that are located so as to create a hazard to employees
shall be removed or supported, as necessary, to safeguard employees

 Ramps used in lieu of steps shall have cleats or a surface treatment to reduce the
slipping hazard.
 Employees exposed to vehicular traffic shall be provided with and shall wear
warning vests or other suitable garments capable of warning approaching traffic.
Reflective or high visibility material shall be used on all these garments
 in all excavations deeper than 4 feet. Air monitoring shall be conducted by a
person
 trained in the use of the monitoring equipment
 Each employee at the edge of an excavation 6 feet or more deep shall be protected
from falling. Guardrail systems, fences, barricades, covers, or a tie-back system
meeting the requirements of the Fall Protection Program shall provide fall
protection.
 Employees exposed to hazards produced by, or performing, welding, cutting, or
brazing operations shall wear, as determined by the Project Manager, approved
spectacles or a welding faceshield or helmet.
 While the excavation is open, adequate safeguards shall be approved by the
Competent Person to ensure underground utilities do not pose a safety or health
hazard to personnel.
