excavated soil is found to be unsuitable for backfilling and proper

compaction. Gatch material shall meet the CLIENT specification.

1.13.5 Soil Stabilization

Soil stabilization can be considered in order to increase mechanical

characteristics of terrain. Stabilization of soil can be obtained using:
Cement: suitable for sandy soil with amount of fine (silt + clay) passing
sieve 200 < 10-15%.
Soil stabilized with cement shall be done according CLIENT
specification.

- Lime: suitable for fine-grained clay soil with amount of fine passing
sieve 200 > 25% and
- Plasticity index > 10 defined as A6 – A7 soil. Soil containing
significant amounts of organic material (<1%) or sulfates (<0,3%)
can be also treated with lime. Lime percentage, moisture etc…
should be determined using a mix design and tests for determination
of the optimum lime-soil mixture. Generally, lime percentage varies
from 1 to 3 %.

1.14 Compaction

• All areas to receive fill, foundations, embankments, roads and paving shall be
proof rolled and compacted to a minimum of 95% of the maximum dry
density determined by the modified proctor test prior to fill or concrete
placement. Prior to start any compaction contractor shall inform client for the
inspection filling soil Layer for the compaction. Any loose, soft or wet areas
shall be removed and replaced with compacted structural fill as specified
above.
• All fill materials shall be placed in maximum 200 mm thick loose horizontal
lifts and compacted by suitable mechanical means.
• All fill except the general fill shall be compacted to 95% of the maximum dry
density as determined by the modified proctor test, and the general fill shall
be compacted to 90%.
• Every effort shall be made to place backfill materials symmetrically and in
uniform layers to prevent unnecessary eccentric loading on a structure or
foundation.
• No permanently exposed fill or embankment slopes shall be steeper than two
horizontals to one vertical.
• Where a large number of lifts are required to complete a backfill operation
and the elapsed time between placements is large, the surface of each lift
shall be gently sloped to facilitate drainage and prevent ponding on the fill.
• For bedding of underground pipe, the trench shall be excavated 100 to 150
mm below the pipe and filled with granular soil material to a height of at
least the middle of the pipe.
• Backfill material placed in an excavated trench shall be compacted with
equipment which will produce the degree of compaction specified.
KE-CL-PRC-GNR-001
Rev. A
METHOD STATEMENT FOR EARTHWORK 27/03/2023
Page 9 of 26

• The amount of water used in compaction shall be limited to that indicated by

modified proctor tests, thorough soaking or flooding shall not be allowed.
Until a minimum cover of 300 mm is obtained over pipes, only hand operated
tamping equipment shall be used.
Heavy compacting equipment, however, shall not be used until the cover is
adequate to prevent injury to the pipe.
• The sides of concrete Area and foundation trenches or in the around the pits
should be filled with suitable excavated material. Filling should be done in
layers, and compacted with steel rammer or with wooden logs.
• The approved excavated material, which has been stocked, shall be cleaned
of all rubbish, large size stone, vegetation etc.
• Filling should be done in layers each layer being of 15cm to 20cm.
Each layer is watered and compacted with heavy rammers of wooden logs or
steel.
• If the area of refilling is large then either electric operated or fuel operated
compactors are used to compact the filling material.
The process of filling in Confined areas, watering and compaction shall be
carried out till the required level is reached so as to form a thoroughly
compacted base.
• While compacting due care is taken to protect the foundations which are
already constructed.
