HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
• Ballet originated in the Italian
Renaissance courts of the 15th
century.
• first ballet de cour was the
Ballet de Polonais
• Catherine de' Medici -
responsible for presenting the
first court ballet ever
• Men as the stars of ballet
• Tutus, ballet slippers and
pointe work were not yet used

out and is worn by a ballerina.

• Mademoiselle De Lafontaine, was


a French ballerina and is
regarded as the first female
professional ballet dancer.
• Marie Taglioni (1829) is believed
to be the first person to sport the
tutu. She is also the first dancer
to rise all the way to the tips of
her toes and dance “en pointe.”

• In 1915, distinguished ballet
dancer Paul Nijinsky performed
classical ballet at the Manila
Hotel Roof Garden. In 1927, Luva
Adameit came to the Philippines
and started a ballet school.

ballerina to bring home a laureate
prize – a silver medal – from the
1987 Asia-Pacific Ballet
Competition in Tokyo.
• Osias Barroso- hailed as a
“ballerina’s prince” in the
Philippines
• Ballet Manila - is a ballet company
in the Philippines founded in 1969
by Alice Reyes with the support of
Eddie Elejar and the Cultural
Center of the Philippines.

• Based on the Sanskrit epic poem
Ramayana. The plot and the setting
do make ideal material for ballet. It
has a prince (RAMA) and a princess
(SITA) , witches, a magical golden
deer, and an army of monkeys who
help our hero defeat the villains.
