QUESTION 1
(a) EXPLAIN THE TERM POPULATION GROWTH
▪ Population growth is the rate at which the number of people in a population increases in a
given time period as a fraction of the initial population OR
▪ Population growth is the rate at which the population size of a defined geographical area
increases or decreases within a given time period as a fraction of the initial population.

(b) THREE FACTORS THAT CAN AFFECT POPULATION GROWTH.

(c) WHY WAS THE WATSON COMMISSION SET UP

▪ Watson Commission was set up to find out the causes of the 1948 riots in Gold Coast and
recommend preventive measures against the recurrence of the violence.
▪ The Watson Commission was a group of three (3) British men who were appointed by the
Queen of England to find out the causes of the 1948 riots in Gold Coast.
▪ The group was known as Watson Commission because its chairman was by the name Andre
Aiken Watson. [4 marks]

(d) FOUR RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE WATSON COMMISSION.


▪ It recommended that the grievances of the ex-soldiers must be addressed immediately.
▪ The commission also recommended that the number of Gold Coasters in the Executive
Council be increased from three (3) to five (5) ministers.
▪ It recommended the enlargement of the Legislative Council with five African majorities.
▪ It also proposed the establishment of Local Councils to replace the existing Local
Authorities.

The commission suggested an expansion of facilities for education in Gold Coast
especially in the levels of primary, middle and secondary education.
▪ It also recommended a new constitution be drafted by the people of Gold Coast
themselves to address all the shortcomings in the 1946 Allan Burns Constitution.

(a) BRIEFLY DESCRIBE THE 1948 RIOTS.

▪ The 1948 riot was a general chaos and disturbances which took place in the major towns and
cities of Gold Coast following the shooting of the three veterans on 28th February, 1948 at the
Christianburg crossroad.
▪ The rioting led to widespread looting and burning of shops owned by Europeans. Lebanese and
Syrians in the Gold Coast.
▪ The three veterans who were killed through shooting on 28th February 1948 were Private
Odartey Lamptey, corporal Patrick Attipoe and Sergent Cornelius Francis Adjetey.

(d) PULL FACTORS AND PUSH FACTORS OF RURAL- URBAN MIGRATION.
▪ Pull factors of rural urban migration are the good conditions existing in urban area which
attract people from the village whereas Push factors of rural – urban migration are the harsh
conditions in the rural areas that make life difficult for people and force them to relocate to
towns and cities. [4 marks]

i. Population census
▪ Population census is the official periodic enumeration of persons residing in a geographical
area at a time for the purpose of obtaining information for planning.

▪ Population structure is the composition or classification of a population in terms of age or sex.

(d) THREE WAYS IS GHANA’S INDEPENDENCE IMPORTANT TO GHANAIANS

▪It gave Ghanaians freedom from colonial rule.


▪It also offered Ghanaians the chance to choose their own government from among their own
people to rule them.
▪ It brought together all the ethnic groups of Ghana as one people with a common aspiration
under one government.
▪ It also conferred on Ghana the privilege of being a sovereign state with the responsibility of
managing its own affairs.
▪ It offered the country the opportunity to become a member of any international body like the
Commonwealth of Nation and the United Nation Organization for her own benefit.

(a) WHAT WAS THE COUSSEY COMMITTEE OF 1949
▪ The Coussey Committee was a group of 39 Ghanaians who were selected by the governor of
Gold Coast based on the recommendations of the Watson Commission. All the Big Six
except Kwame Nkrumah were included in the committee.
▪ Sir Henley Coussey, the chairman of the committee was the only non- Ghanaian member.

(d) CONTRIBUTIONS OF GHANA’S FOUNDING LEADERS
▪ They fought against the extension of British colonial power over Gold Coast. For example,
they protested the Land Bill which sought to vest all the unused lands in the Crown and so
make the land of Gold Coast the property of the colonial government.
▪ The founding leaders protested the actions of the colonial government which did not favour
the native people of Gold Coast.
▪ They created awareness in the people that it was bad and a disgrace to be colonized.
▪ They also educated the people about how the British were taking away our resources.
