Extension Activities
Read the story together with your child. Use the
discussion questions before, during, and after your
reading to deepen your child’s understanding of the
story and the rime (word family) that is introduced.
The activities provide fun ideas for continuing the
conversation about the story and the vocabulary
that is introduced. They will help your child make
personal connections to the story and use the
vocabulary to describe prior experiences.
Note: Please make sure that your child does not have
any food allergies before working with or eating nuts.
Additionally, dogs should not be given human food,
including nuts, regularly. Macadamia nuts, especially,
are dangerous to dogs.
Discussion Questions
• What kind of nuts do you like to eat at home?
• What foods do you enjoy that a pet would
enjoy, too?
Activities at Home
• Work together with your child to act out the
story. Use a knife to cut a nut (or some other
food item) in two pieces. When you and your
child are finished acting out the story, review
the -ut words that your child knows.
• Have your child pick a favorite food. Then
retell the story using his or her favorite food
instead of a nut. Help your child use the sight
words and other vocabulary from the story.
Discuss why cutting the food in two pieces is
a good solution in the story. Can your child
12 think of any other solutions?
