Discussion Questions
• Why do you think Dad tells Gus to run to the tub? (Gus is dirty.)
• What does Gus do to prepare for his bath? (He brings many toys
to the tub.)
• Which do you think is more fun, playing in the muck or playing in
the tub?
• How do you think Gus’s dad feels about Gus’s bath?

Exploring the Story

• Make a list of all the things in the tub: a cup, a pup, a bug,
a jug, a sub, a tug, a bus, a duck, and Gus. Have children
find the words that rhyme with these things. For each set
of words, discuss the sounds of the letters that make the
words rhyme (up in cup and pup; ug in bug, jug, and tug; us
in bus and Gus).
• The words “rub a dub dub” come from an old English
nursery rhyme. Have children make variations on this line
by changing the initial consonants. For example: “sub a cub
cub” or “dub a mub mub.” Then change the vowel u to a, e,
i, or o, as in “rob a dob dob.”
• Make bubble paint by adding tempera paint to dishwashing
liquid detergent in a shallow dish. Make several different
mixtures and place on a table covered with newspaper.
Use a straw to blow gently into the liquid until the bubbles
nearly spill over. Have a child place a sheet of white
construction paper gently over the dish. Let the bubbles
pop against the paper, making a design. You can use the
other mixtures to add more colors to the paper. Let the art
dry and use for a display or a greeting card. Refresh the
bubbles by blowing into the dish.
