POKHARA UNIVERSITY

Level: Bachelor Semester – Spring Year: 2020

Program: BE Full Marks: 70
Course: Applied Mechanics I Pass Marks: 31.5
Time: 2 hrs.
Candidates are required to answer in their own words as far as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.

Attempt all the questions.

Section - A: (5 ×10=50)
Q. N. 1 Determine the forces in cables AB and AC required to hold the ball of mass M= (35+ [8+2=10]
sum of last two digits of your exam roll number) kg as shown in figure below to be in
equilibrium. Take tension in the cable AD= 200 N. Also, draw the free body diagram
of joint B and joint D.

Q. N. 2 a) A block of mass M= 50 kg rests on a horizontal plane as shown below in Figure- [5+5=10]

2a. Find the magnitude of the force P required to make block just about to move
rightward. The coefficient of static friction between the block and the plane
s=0.25.

b) Analyze the force in members AB and BC of truss as shown above in Figure-2b by
appropriate method. Take external forces F1= 60 kN and F2= 30 kN.
Q. N. 3 State the ‘Parallel Axis Theorem’ and write down the mathematical expression. [3+7=10]
Calculate the centroid of the given shaded area with respect to X and Y-axis.

Q. N. 4 a) The acceleration of a particle as a function of time is given as a= kt, where, a is [7+3=10]

linear acceleration in m/s2, k is proportionality constant in m/s3 and t is time in
seconds. At countdown time t= 0 second, the velocity of a particle v= (2+ last digit
of your exam roll number) m/s. Knowing the condition that both the velocity and
position are zero at countdown time t=5 seconds; write down the final general
equations of motion of the particle as a function of time.
b) Write down the general mathematical expression for radial and transverse
components of acceleration of a particle in a radial motion and reduce it for special
case of circular motion.
Q. N. 5 The two blocks A of mass MA= (40+ sum of last two digits of your exam roll number) 10
kg and B of mass MB= (15+ sum of last two digits of your exam roll number) kg start
their downward motion initially from rest. Neglecting the mass of pulleys and the effect
of friction in the pulleys, determine the acceleration of each block as well as the tension
developed in each cable. Take coefficient of friction= 0.20 on the interface of block B
and inclined plane.

How kinematics of particle and rigid body is different from its kinetics? The 5 kg [2+8=10]
collar A is sliding around a smooth frictionless semi-circular guide rod in a vertical
plane. At the instant shown, the speed of the collar is v = (2+ last digit of your exam
roll number) m/s, which is increasing at the rate of 3 m/s2. Determine the normal
reaction N of the guide rod on the collar, and force P at this instant.

Section – B: Attempt the question given below (1×20=20)

Q. N. 6 a) Draw shear force and bending moment diagram of the beam loaded as shown in the 10
figure.

b) Write short notes on followings: [4×2.5=10]

i) Scope of Applied Mechanics
ii) Polar Coordinate System
iii) Moment of a Couple
iv) Energy and Momentum Method
