LESSON

Sculpture, is the action or art of making statues by carving or chiseling (as in wood
or stone), by modeling (as in clay), or by casting (as in melted metal) in which hard
or plastic materials are worked into three-dimensional art objects. The designs may
be embodied in freestanding objects, in reliefs on surfaces, or in environments
ranging from tableaux to contexts that envelop the spectator.

CAMBODIA
HUMAN SCULPTURES. Some
details found in the walls of
temple complex.

For many thousands of

years, the art of stone carving has
flourished in Cambodia. From
small statues to the breath taking
carvings found at Angkor Wat,
this art medium has become one
of the country's most cherished
art forms.

Stone carving has been both a passion and a livelihood for many Cambodian
sculptors. The art of stone carving in Cambodia has a very long, fascinating history
which goes back to the foundation of the Khmer nation.

ANGKOR WAT, CAMBODIA. The

largest temple complex in the
world built in the first half of the
12th century.

THAILAND
Thailand is world-famous
for its sculpture that dates back
4,000 years. The most commonly
used materials are wood, stone,
ivory, clay, and various metals.
The most notable sculptures are
the Thai bronzes famous for their
originality and grace.

This famous sculpture in

Wat Pho in Bangkok is 46 meters
long and 15 meters high. It is made of plaster on a brick core and finished in gold
leaf. The feet are inlaid with mother of pearl.

THE RECLINING
BUDDHA AT WAT PHO.
A giant statue of
Buddha in a very
comfortable position.

You’ll need to take

your shoes off to enter,
and if you’d like a little
good luck, we
recommend purchasing a bowl of coins at the entrance of the hall which you can
drop in the 108 bronze bowls which line the length of the walls. Dropping the small
pennies in makes a nice ringing sound and even if your wishes don’t come true, the
money goes towards helping the monks renovate and preserve Wat Pho. As this is a
revered image, all visitors must wear appropriate clothing – no exposed shoulders or
skin above the knee.

Elephant is the Official National Animal in Thailand. There are currently
about 3,000-4,000 elephants in Thailand, a huge drop off from the 1850s, when
100,000 elephants roamed the country. 4. About half of
all elephants in Thailand are domesticated and 20% of
all elephants in Thailand are believed to live in the northern province of Chang
Mai.
