Characteristics of the unit

Characteristics of the unit

The service-friendly VarnishElimination Units VEU are used to condition
mineral oils. They are particularly effective at removing oil aging products
(varnish) from mineral oils. Varnish takes the form of oil-insoluble oil
degradation products which settle in the tank, the valves or the bearings.
These can be filterable gels or solid paint-type deposits.
The VEU-F series of units is used in bypass flow. The varnish is removed by
reducing the oil solubility of varnish and then filtering it out.
Uses for the VEU-F include:
• Removal of solid or gel-like oil degradation products in lubrication and
hydraulic systems, e.g. in:
o Presses
o Machine tools
o Systems with H1 food-grade oils
o Turbine lubrication

Using the VEU-F can offer you the following advantages:

• Increased operating reliability of the system as a result of fewer
deposits in hydraulic valves
• Increase in the oil service life

Setting up / Installing VEU-F

Setting up / Installing VEU-F

Observe the following points when setting up the unit:
1. The unit must be set up on an even, level surface.
2. Make sure that there is sufficient space above the filter housing to
replace the filter elements.
3. Make sure that there is sufficient space above the side cooler. For more
details, see the Installation and Maintenance Instructions for the side
cooler, which are included in the Technical Documentation for the unit.
4. Observe the maximum permissible ambient temperature and constant
supply of cooling air for units which have a motor-pump assembly to
avoid overheating.
5. In the case of installation below the fluid level, install shut-off valves in
the feed and return lines.
6. Connect the suction and pressure ports as described on pages 28 to
29.
7. Connect all the unit's electrical connections. See page 30 for details
8. When starting up for the first time, follow the steps below:
- Fill the side cooler with a water/glycol mixture; for more details, see
page 29.
- Insert the filter elements in the filter housing. See page 35 for details.

Notes on pipes and hoses

Make sure that no vibrations or stress/loading from other machinery and
equipment are carried over to filter housing. If necessary, use expansion
joints.
The pressure loss in a hydraulic line depends upon:
• Flow rate
• Kinematic viscosity
• Pipe dimensions
• Fluid density
The pressure loss can be estimated for hydraulic oils as follows:

Δp ≈ 6.8 * L / d4 * Q * V * D
Δp = Pressure differential in [bar]
L = Pipe length [m]
d = Internal pipe diameter [mm]
Q = Flow rate [l/min]
V = Kinematic viscosity [mm²/s]
D = Density [kg/dm³] Mineral oil based hydraulic fluid has a
density of ≈ 0.9 kg/dm³.

This applies to straight pipelines and hydraulic oils. Additional threaded

connections and pipe bends increase the pressure differential. Additional
threaded connections and pipe bends increase the pressure differential.
Keep the height difference between the pump and the oil level in the tank as
low as possible.
Constrictions in the connections and lines should be avoided. This could
compromise suction output and cause cavitation.
Take note that the nominal size of the connected hoses/piping must be at
least as large as the inlet port sizes.
Make sure that no vibrations or stress/loading from other machinery and
equipment are carried over to filtration unit. Make sure that no vibrations or
stress/loading from other machinery and equipment are carried over to
filtration unit. Use hoses or expansion joints if necessary.

Setting up / Installing VEU-F

Connecting the suction port - INLET

For the suction port connection, use a flexible hose that is resistant to
negative pressure. Avoid constrictions in the connecting lines, as they
compromise suction performance and increase the risk of cavitation.
In case of coarse contamination (> 100 µm) such as weld splatter, an
appropriate suction strainer must be installed in the suction line in order to
protect the pump.
If a unit without a motor-pump assembly is used, it is important to ensure that
no pressure pulsation is transmitted to the filter housing.

NOTICE

Overpressure at the suction port connection

The unit will be damaged

► The maximum pressure on the suction port IN must not be more than -
0.4 to 2.0 bar.

Connecting the pressure port - OUTLET

Make sure that the nominal width of the pressure line corresponds to the
connector thread of the filter housing.
Install the return line below the oil level to prevent air from entering the fluid
in the tank.
If the clogging indicator pressure displayed for the a clean
filter element is > 1 bar, use a differential pressure clogging
indicator.

Preparing the RFCS side cooler

Remove the metal air filter from the side cooler and fill the tank with the
water/glycol coolant (min. 20% … max. 40%) up to the "Max." mark using the
tank filling nozzles on the side cooler.
Insert the metal air filter in the side cooler and check that the side cooler is
switched on at the main switch (13.1).
For more details, see the Installation and Maintenance Instructions for the
side cooler, which are included in the Technical Documentation for the unit.

Setting up / Installing VEU-F

Electrical connection of the unit

Check the voltage and frequency specifications on the motor name plate
against the existing network specifications.
Plug the male connector into a suitable, grounded power outlet.

Checking direction of rotation

Check the direction of rotation of the motor by switching it on briefly (jog
mode).
The unit requires a clockwise rotating field at the connecting socket.

NOTICE

Incorrect phase sequence / rotation direction of the motor

The pumps will be destroyed.

► In jog mode, check the direction of rotation of the motors.

► A rotation direction arrow on the fan cover of the motor identifies the

Changing filter element(e)

To change the filter elements, proceed as follows:
1. Switch off the motor-pump assembly and
make sure that it cannot be inadvertently
switched back on.

2. Close all shut-off valves at the inlet and

outlet.
3. Unscrew the air bleed screw (x) completely
using a 10 mm Allen wrench.

4. (1) Have a suitable container on hand to

catch the fluid.
(2) Open the drain fitting, and collect the
escaping fluid in the tray.
Once the housing has been completely
drained, close the drain fitting.

3. Screw in the air bleed screw (x) by hand in a

clockwise direction, and tighten it using a
10 mm Allen wrench.

Clean the suction strainer

NOTICE

Suction strainer missing / operating without a suction strainer

The unit will be destroyed

► Never operate the unit without a suction strainer.

► Clean the suction screen regularly.

A suction strainer is fitted into a piece of pipe of the suction line to protect the
pump from coarse contamination.
Clean the suction strainer at regular intervals, e.g. by flushing it with solvent
or blow-flushing it with compressed air.
Test and clean the suction strainer immediately in the event of insufficient
suction or delivery action.

Cleaning / Flushing the plate heat exchanger on the cooling water side
Clean the heat exchanger contaminated on the cooling water side by
flushing. This loosens and removes the majority of soft deposits clogging the
inside.
The solution used for flushing is a weak acid with concentration less than 5%,
for example citric acid.
If acidity is too high, the copper and stainless steel, which is inside the plate
heat exchanger, might be etched or corroded. Before restarting the system,
flush the plate heat exchanger with large amounts of fresh water to remove
any remaining acid solution.

Exchanging / Replacing plate heat exchanger

If the heat exchanger is blocked/clogged on the oil side or if there is no flow,
replace the heat exchanger.
