Welcome to the MAPEH Grade 8 Self Learning Module on Health 8 Quarter 1


Module 3!

This Self Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge
Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership
with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis
N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

Welcome to MAPEH Grade 8 Self Learning Module on Health 8 Quarter 1 Module 3!

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in
your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be
enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

LESSON

ISSUES/CONCERNS OF TEENAGERS

Teenagers face real problems on a daily basis during the most awkward growth stages of their
lives; between 13 and 19-years-old. During this time, teens are exposed to some
overwhelming external and internal struggles. These issues and concerns of teenagers that
face today‟s generation are usually related to:

1. Identity Crisis- a period of uncertainty and confusion in which a person's sense of


identity becomes insecure, typically due to a change in their expected aims or role in
society.
2. Self-esteem- is used to describe a person‟s overall sense of self-worth or personal
value.
3. Body Image - One‟s body image is how and what you think and feel about your body.
4. Stress - A feeling of emotional or physical tension.
5. Bullying - includes behaviors that focus on making someone else feel inadequate such
as harassment and physical harm.
6. Depression - Is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of
interest.
7. Cyber Addiction - Teen internet addiction is a behavioral disorder, characterized by
compulsive and harmful amounts of internet use.
8. Drinking and Smoking - An alcoholic drink is a drink that contains the recreational
drug ethanol, a type of alcohol produced by fermentation of grains, fruits, or other
sources of sugar.
A cigarette is a narrow cylinder containing psychoactive material, typically tobacco that
is rolled into thin paper for smoking.
9. Teenage Pregnancy - also known as adolescent pregnancy, is pregnancy in a female
under the age of 20.
10. Underage sex - or pre-marital sex among teenagers can lead to HIV, STDs, & Teen
Pregnancy.
11. Defiant Behavior - Teenager has a frequent and persistent pattern of anger,
irritability, arguing, defiance or vindictiveness toward an adult and other authority
figures, he or she may have oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).
12. Peer Pressure - A feeling that one must do the same things as other people of one's
age and social group in order to be liked or respected by them.

NEED FOR SUPPORT AND UNDERSTANDING OF FAMILY

Family support is important to individuals for a variety of reasons, most of which are related
to your personal well-being. Family is important to individuals because it provides benefits to
your physical, emotional, and mental health that can't be found anywhere else.

Emotional support: “Making us feel better, sharing in happy moments together,” she says.
Esteem support: “Making us feel good about ourselves, validating when we‟re doing well,
helping out when we‟re not doing as well.”
Network support: “That sense of belonging. That‟s really important with families, so you kind
of have a home base, a place where you feel accepted and you belong, no matter what.”
Informational support: How to do things that maybe were done by others in another family setting.
Tangible support: Things like financial support and care packages from home.

DECISION-MAKING SKILLS IN MANAGING SEXUALLY-RELATED ISSUES.

A decision is a choice you make or act upon. A good decision is a decision in which you have
carefully considered the outcome of each choice. To accept personal responsibility is to
accept how your decisions may affect you and other people. Decision-making skills will help
you make decisions based on your needs and desires.
THE SIX STEPS OF DECISION MAKING
MANAGING SEXUALLY RELATED ISSUES

A sexually healthy teen will show or have the following qualities within
their relationships with themselves, parents and family members, peers and intimate partners.

Relationship with Self


Appreciates their own body
Takes responsibility for their own behaviors
Knows about sexual health issues
Relationships with Parents and Family Members
Communicates effectively with family members about issues, including sexuality:
 has a good balance between family roles and responsibilities and their growing
need for independence
 asks parents and other trusted adults questions about sexual health issues and
accepts their guidance
Relationships with Peers
Interacts with all people (including those with different sexual orientation and gender
identity different from their own) in proper and respectful ways:
 communicates well with friends and shows empathy in relationships
 recognizes and stays away from relationships that may not be healthy for
themselves or others
Relationships with Intimate Partners
Shows love and intimacy in a way that‟s appropriate for their age:
 believes that everyone has equal rights and responsibilities for love and sexual
relationships
 can say „no‟ and accepts when a partner says „no‟
Has the skills to decide how ready they are for mature sexual relationships:
 talks with a partner about sexual behaviors before they happen
 if they choose to have sex, protects self and partner from unplanned pregnancy
and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) by using birth control, condoms,
and other safer sex practices

1. Your classmates are going to a party this week end, this is the first time that you are asked
to attend by a friend but then you discern that your parents will not approve it. You don‟t
want to make your friends angry by not going, but you also don‟t want to get in trouble with
your parents. Determine what decision you should make.

2. One of your closest friends tells his/her problem and asks for your support. He got his
girlfriend pregnant / she got pregnant. How can you show your support and stand firm with
the morals that having children should be the choice of matured individuals under the

Helping the teenagers make good decisions, teenagers have to make decisions every day, yet
lots of teens aren‟t taught the skills they need to make healthy and informed choices. This
often results in rushed or wrong decisions when faced with tricky situations or dilemmas.
Guide them to recognize the importance of good decision-making skills, and how they can set
teenagers form their life. Parents have lots of influence over this teenager, so help teach them
the important lessons to make choices the right way.

VALUING

Your decisions related to your sexual behaviors affect yourself and other now or later in your
life. These sexual behaviors may be toward yourself, your family, your friends, or other
people. Thus, what you choose to do, and how you behave, should be guided by family,
social and spiritual standards, and should be based on decision-making steps or procedures.
