Operating Challenges for Preservation

Recent years mode of operation

• Station operating regime varies considerably; between 1 and 4 units
running with daily start-ups and shutdowns
• Maximum stand-by period (ca. 4 weeks)
• Units must remain available with short start-up times

Preservation challenges
• Not possible to protect all plant areas with conventional methods due
to plant design
• Established preservation methods difficult to implement without
compromising start-up times
• Steam turbines routinely not preserved unless more than 2 weeks
stand-by (need to connect dehumidifiers)
Water/Steam Cycle Treatment

Time period History of treatment concepts

Unit 4 & 1
Until 2013 Ammonia (feed water pH 9.4 – 9.6)
NaOH (HP pH 9.2 – 9.4 / IP, LP 9.5 – 9.8)

Unit 4

Ammonia & caustic same as before

Unit 1
08.2015 Cetamine® G850 (CFA)

Conclusions

• New treatment concept with film forming amines evaluated

• CFA could be determined on both water and and steam touched surfaces,
including HP Evaporator, Reheater, LP Steam Turbine cylinders
• Cleaning effect evident in Unit 4 HP Evaporator - removal of loose iron
oxides, but not magnetite layer
• Cetamine® G850 in accordance with steam quality requirements
• Protection of components throughout the water/steam cycle, including areas
that could not be preserved by nitrogen capping or dehumidified air
circulation
• Minimal manpower for preservation compared to nitrogen capping or
dehumidification

to 3rd party ecological assessment
BENEFITS OF CETAMINE® G851
Why it is important to have single component Cetamine® product?

• Degassed cationic conductivity below 0,2 µS/cm in accordance to

international guidelines (e. g. VGB)
• Less impact on environment in case of system draining for dry lay-
up
• All guidelines and power plant operators refer to single component
products
• Can be dosed to existing conventional treatment
• Implemented in IAPWS Technical Guidance Document (TGD) on
the “Application of Film Forming Amines in Fossil, Combined
Cycle, and Biomass Power Plants”
• Implemented in VGB Standard on the “Preservation of Power
Plants“
