The Egyptians were the first to have been making paper from a plant called papyrus. It growing in the
delta of River Nile in Africa. For a long time, papyrus is continuing to have been used as a writing
material. Then the Chinese further has been perfecting the art of making paper. The demand for paper
will have increased while books begin to be printed.

Fill in the blanks using correct form of the verbs:

badly and _______ (limp) when some passers-by ______ (notice)

Proof reading- Editing Pains

Imagine yourself as the editor of the school magazine. A lovely article has come to you, but
unfortunately it has a lot of Subject Verb Agreement errors! Circle the subjects and underline
the verbs. Make an arrow from the verb to its subject. If the sentence has a subject-verb
agreement error, cross out the incorrect verb and write the correct verb form above it. You
may need to rewrite the article on an A4 sheet.
The Columbia Icefield The Rocky Mountains, on the border of the provinces of Alberta and British
Columbia, has many attractions for tourists. One attraction is the Columbia Icefield. This huge field of
ancient ice cover 125 square kilometers.
The Athabasca, Stutfield and Dome glaciers make up the icefield. As the ice melts, the water flow into
four major river systems. These systems is the Columbia, Fraser, Mackenzie and Saskatchewan. The
meltwater flows down these rivers into three different oceans, the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic. This
high point in a continent’s water system is called a “hydrological apex”, and the Columbia Icefield is
one of only two such apexes in the world.
Tourists visit the icefield from April to October each year. Walking tours and snowcoach tours is
available. Many people go to the icefield because it is the biggest area of ice and snow in North
America south of the Arctic Circle.
Five-Minute Gratitude Journal

3. Daily affirmation. I am….. (say something positive and uplifting about yourself )
4. 3 amazing things that have happen today.
5. How could I have made today even better?
Newspaper reading

SENTENCE

Activity 2: Choose any article from a newspaper (only 1 article) and re-write it as a descriptive
paragraph.

meaning and usage.
Write a descriptive paragraph based on (The Lake Isle of Innisfree and Rain on the Roof) poems using
those adjectives and draw a picture using water colours/ acrylic paints depicting the event( rain) and

Chemistry
Matter in Our Surroundings
Gases are highly compressible as compared to solids and liquids. The liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
cylinder that we get in our home for cooking or the oxygen supplied to hospitals in cylinders is
compressed gas. Compressed natural gas (CNG) is used as fuel these days in vehicles. The liquid takes
up the shape of the container in which they are kept. Liquids flow and change shape, so they are not
rigid but can be called fluid. Solids and liquids can diffuse into liquids. The aquatic animals can breathe
underwater. The rate of diffusion of liquids is greater than solid.
1) Why is Compressed natural gas (CNG) is used as fuel these days in
vehicles?
a) due to its high compressibility
b) large volumes of a gas can be compressed into a small cylinder
c) transported easily
d) all of these
2) liquids have no fixed _______ but have a fixed________ .
a) shape, volume
b) volume, shape
c) shape, size
d) size, shape

3) The aquatic animals can breathe underwater due to

a) the presence of dissolved carbon dioxide in water
b) the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water
c) the presence of dissolved Nitrogen in the water
d) all of these
4) The rate of diffusion of liquids is greater than solid due to
a) liquid particles move freely b) liquid have greater space between each other
c) both (a) and (b) d) none of these
5) The property of flow is unique to fluids. Which one of the following statements is correct?
a) Only gases behave like fluids b) Gases and solids behave like fluids
c) Gases and liquids behave like fluids d) Only liquids are fluids

II. You must have observed that the rate of evaporation increases with–an increase of surface area. We
know that evaporation is a surface phenomenon. If the surface area is increased, the rate of
evaporation increases. For example, while putting clothes dry, we spread them out an increase of
temperature. With the increase of temperature, more particles get enough kinetic energy to go into
the vapour state. In an open vessel, the liquid keeps on evaporating. The particles of liquid absorb
energy from the surrounding to regain the energy lost during evaporation. This absorption of
energy from the surroundings makes the surroundings cold. What happens when you pour some
acetone (nail polish remover) on your palm? The particles gain energy from your palm or
surroundings and evaporate causing the palm to feel cool. After a hot sunny day, people sprinkle
water on the roof or open ground because the large latent heat of vaporization of water helps to
cool the hot surface.
(i) Evaporation is a surface phenomenon. True or false
a) True b) False c) None of these
(ii) As temperature increases the rate of evaporation is
a) increases b) decreases c) remains constant d) None of these
(iii) The rate of evaporation increases with
a) Increase in wind speed b) Decrease in wind speed
c) Does not have any effect from wind speed d) None of these
(iv) What happens when you pour some acetone (nail polish remover) on your palm?
(v) We are able to sip hot tea from a saucer rather than from a cup. Why?
III. What happens inside the matter during a change of state? On increasing the temperature of solids,
the kinetic energy of the particles increases. Due to the increase in kinetic energy, the
Particles start vibrating with greater speed. The energy supplied by heat overcomes the forces of
attraction between the particles. The particles leave their fixed positions and start moving more
freely. A stage is reached when the solid melts and is converted to a liquid. The minimum
temperature at which a solid melts to become a liquid at the atmospheric pressure is called its
melting point.
The temperature of the system does not change after the melting point is reached, till all the ice
melts. This happens even though we continue to heat the beaker, that is, we continue to supply heat.
This heat gets used up in changing the state by overcoming the forces of attraction between the
particles. The amount of heat energy that is required to change 1 kg of a solid into liquid at
atmospheric pressure at its melting point is known as the latent heat of fusion. So, particles in water
at 00 C (273 K) have more energy as compared to particles in ice at the same temperature.
The temperature at which a liquid starts boiling at the atmospheric pressure is known as its boiling
point. Boiling is a bulk phenomenon. Particles from the bulk of the liquid gain enough energy to
change into the vapour state. A change of state directly from solid to gas without changing into
liquid state is called sublimation and the direct change of gas to solid without changing into liquid
is called deposition.
(i) A change of state directly from solid to gas without changing into liquid state is called
a) Sublimation b) Deposition c) Boiling point d) None of these
(ii) The direct change of gas to solid without changing into liquid is called
a) Sublimation b) Deposition c) Boiling point d) None of these
(iii) The energy supplied by heat to solid is used to overcome the forces of attraction between the
particles. True or false
a) True b) False c) None of these
(iv) Define melting point and boiling point
(v) Define latent heat of fusion
