I’m writing this in late April but it still feels pretty wintry outside and I’m still testing the heating in every road test ’van!
Despite the weather, though, we’re already accepting invitations to the press launches for next season’s new models,
which incredibly start in May! I’ve no doubt that we’ll see a bumper crop of new ’vans for 2025 but, in the meantime,
this issue covers some of the mid-season launches that debuted at the February NEC show. I was particularly
impressed with the Affinity from Coachman, which sees that brand expanding to have a real range of premium models,
while Robeta is a continental marque that promises something a bit special. Almost all of the really exciting
developments still seem to be in larger campervans or compact coachbuilts at the moment...

Farewell VW T6.1
ith the world premiere of the new

W California campervan scheduled to

have happened (on 7 May) by the time
this issue goes on sale, Volkswagen is bidding
farewell to the current T6.1 generation of
California with the final examples being called
‘Last Edition’. Production of the new camper,
based on the Multivan people-carrier (not the
joint venture Ford/VW panel van), will begin this
summer and it is expected to closely mirror the
design of the concept shown at the Caravan
Salon Düsseldorf last August.
With Beach, Coast and Ocean variants, the
T6.1 California has been a consistent best seller
in its class but no new dealer orders are being
taken. The final 1,500 models to roll off the
Hanover-Limmer production line will wear
a ‘Last Edition’ sticker on the D-pillar to show
that they are the final examples of the breed.
The California’s history began in 1988 with
the rear-engined T3-based model, 5,000 of which
were sold in the first year. In August 1990, the
camper moved onto the front-wheel drive T4 van
and, by 2003, 39,000 examples had hit the road.
The California as we know it in the UK arrived
with the T5 and 55,000 of these were made
before the T6 took over in 2016. That model
broke all previous records with 15,155 new
registrations in a single year (2017).

GLOBE-TRAVELLER’S LATEST MODEL

Polish premium campervan converter (winner of the Campervan of the Year
title in 2023), Globe-Traveller, has introduced a new model, the Explorer 2Z.
The Explorer range is based on the Peugeot Boxer extra-high (H3) panel van
with standard bodywork, unlike the range-topping Voyager which has bespoke
designs for the overcab and rear panel.
The new two-berth model is 6.36m long and incorporates the most popular
features of its predecessors, the Explorer 2X and 2XS, such as a single seat
configuration replacing the rear bench for enhanced comfort, a foldable table
for multifunctional use, a double floor with an underfloor storage compartment
for additional space, and a dedicated shoe storage area for extra convenience.
It has rear single beds that can be converted into a king-size double.
In response to the increasing demand from cyclists, the Explorer 2Z also
features a bike-specific version with several tailored modifications. These
include a lowered bed position, a new bike platform to facilitate easier
loading and unloading of bicycles, and a redesigned boot area for better
space utilisation.
The Globe-Traveller Explorer 2Z was unveiled in April at the Camper
Caravan Show in Nadarzyn, Poland.

logistics sectors. A coalition of three

automotive manufacturers and the know-

automotive logistics.
The three companies are renowned
for their leadership in:

as LCV manufacturing for Renault Group
z Transport solutions with expertise in
tailored services, uptime, and
productivity for Volvo Group
z Logistics, notably for the automotive
industry, and as a pioneer in the
decarbonisation of supply chain for

The vehicles will be built on a new fully
electric LCV skateboard platform that will
offer a good deal of modularity for different
body types at a competitive cost, as well as
covering modern safety requirements.

Renault Group’s Sandouville plant, which
will recruit 550 extra people over the next
four years.

− or, indeed, any other motorhome!
British driver, Jack Aitken, will take his place
at the wheel of the racing Ferrari, which will

Wellhouse Leisure’s new Transit Custom

outh Yorkshire-based Wellhouse Leisure was
S one of the first converters in the country to
build a campervan on the first-generation Ford
Transit Custom, back in 2013. Now, it is one of
the first to launch a conversion on the all-new
(V710) Transit Custom.
Called the Misano 5, the latest Wellhouse
camper is priced from £71,500 based on a
Limited spec top-of-the-range van with the
136hp engine and manual gearbox. An
automatic version (with eight-speed
transmission) costs an additional £1,500 and
150hp and plug-in hybrid derivatives will follow.
Base vehicle spec includes automatic
headlights, a reversing camera, alloy wheels,
heated cab seats, power folding mirrors, front
and rear parking sensors, metallic paint,
keyless entry, a Quickclear heated windscreen
and Thatcham Category 1 alarm.
The Misano 5 has a side kitchen layout with
a German Schnierle crash-tested sliding seat
system and a UK-manufactured pop-top roof
with upper double bed. Also included are
Webasto diesel heating and hot water system,
a 150W solar panel, a drawer-style fridge,
external barbecue point, a lithium leisure
battery and an 8in touchscreen control panel.

They’re back! The all-grey slimline models return…

WHO IS CHAUSSON?

Chausson motorhomes are built by

Trigano VDL, with its main factory in
the picturesque Ardèche region of
France. One of the largest caravan and
motorhome factories in Europe, it is
also home to Challenger motorhomes
(Chausson’s sister brand, which is not
sold here) and Caravelair caravans.
Chausson vehicles have been available
in the UK since 2003, with Britain being
the company’s second-largest export
market. With a reputation for strong value
and innovative design, the French maker
has also risen to become one of the top-
selling imported motorhome brands here.
Its range includes Fiat-based van
conversions, as well as low-profiles on
Ford or Fiat chassis, plus the X550 and
X650 campervan-sized motorhomes.

HAUSSON’S range of ‘S’ model low-
profiles has had a bit of an odd history in
the marketplace. Launched for the 2022
season, two layouts arrived in budget spec First
Line trim (with prices back then starting at
under £45k). Then, a year later, they were joined
by Sport Line versions with more spec – these
were easily identified by their all-grey bodywork
(rather than all white). But, at the 2024 season
preview, the French company announced that
the UK wouldn’t be getting any ‘S’ models for the
year ahead as Ford couldn’t supply sufficient
chassis. In the home market, the ‘S’ would swap
onto the Renault Master cab but none of those
would be coming here…
At the February NEC show, however, both ‘S’
layouts were back on the stand. Clearly, Ford had
found a few extra Transits down the back of the
sofa (or perhaps they’s speeded up the Turkish
factory) and, with slimline models seeming very
much en vogue at the moment, it has wisely
reintroduced them here.
These compact motorhomes are based on the
Ford Transit with the top-of-the-range 170hp
engine and six-speed automatic gearbox as
standard. Even in the slimline class, they’re
narrow – just 2.10m wide – making them
barely wider than a panel van and great for
exploring towns and venturing to off-the-
beaten-track locations.
The entry-level First Line versions haven’t
reappeared but the Sport Lines are so distinctive,
with Ford’s Grey Matter paint all over – actually,
that’s not quite true as the plastic parts have the
colour impregnated, not sprayed. The roof
remains white, too, to reflect heat in the summer
sun and this 2024 edition comes with a
redesigned overcab pod that now includes an
opening sunroof for more daylight and
ventilation up front.
With its bold colour and small size, the ‘S’
models are intended to compete with campervans
(but not wanting to miss out on any sales,
Chausson has a new panel van range this year,
too – see page 16). This S697 model is only

6.59m long, while the alternative S514 is a
whisker less than six metres. The pair differ only
in their rear bedroom format; the longer ’van
replacing a transverse double bed with
lengthways singles. In other words, these are
typical floorplans both for compact low-profiles
and continental campervans.
Externally, the S697’s unusual colour is made
even more eye-catching with bright green
graphics, 16in black alloy wheels and the Trail-
spec black grille with ‘FORD’ emblazoned across
it. The cab’s kit list is likely to grab your attention,
too, as it includes an electric parking brake,
cruise control, ESP, start/stop, front fog lamps,
automatic lights and wipers, a heated windscreen,
lane keeping assistance and a collision warning
system. Then there’s the Connect Pack, which is
also standard – that adds a DAB radio with
Bluetooth, reversing camera and central
touchscreen display.
The habitation body uses Chausson’s IRP
structure with GRP on the floor, roof and sides.
The floor is 64mm thick and 5.5kW diesel
heating will keep you warm in winter. Framed
habitation windows are a nice surprise on a
relatively inexpensive ’van and, of course, the
rear garage is a key selling point. This area has
twin loading doors (just a small one on the
nearside), fixed lashing points, 12V and 230V
sockets, and bike-friendly 1.05m headroom.
Unlike many larger motorhomes, there’s a very
generous payload, too, so you can make full use
of the storage on offer.
Inside, the half-dinette lounge is much as
you’d expect but it has a different feel to a
campervan as the entrance is much narrower.
On the offside, forward of the door, is a small
jump seat (30cm deep) with a top-loading
cupboard behind – it makes a great footrest
for the swivelled driver’s seat. The forward-
facing bench (with two seatbelts) is quite
upright but fairly comfortable, as long as
you’re reasonably long in the legs, but the
most noticeable feature here is the automotive-
style faux leather upholstery. You’ll also notice

with the ‘S’ logo.
The rather compact galley has a two-burner
hob and an 87-litre fridge (a basic model with
push-button ignition for its gas function).
Worktop is also very limited until you deploy the
flap at the forward end or add the loose cover
over the sink. There is a cutlery drawer and a
large low-level cupboard, but the most unusual
feature – we’d go so far as to use the word
‘strange’ – is the location of the grill, added for
the UK market to appease British culinary needs.
With limited space in the kitchen, this is
positioned in a top locker above the half-dinette
– don’t sit underneath when the cook is

extracting something hot!
So, the galley is campervan-esque (with an
odd twist), but the washroom is a clear
advantage over most van-based models. Here,
a huge mirror increases the impression of
space but it’s not found wanting in reality,
especially when you swing the basin to the
right to create a good-sized shower cubicle.
The only downside we spotted was the flimsy
feel of the plastic catch that secures the
moving wall.
The layout is completed by rear single beds
measuring 1.98m long on the offside and
1.93m on the nearside. Overhead cupboards
will stop you sitting up with a cuppa and

Then, in England, there

If you’re heading off on a grand tour,
it’s reassuring to know that there are
Chausson dealers as far afield as
Bulgaria, Lithuania, Sweden and Greece.
there’s a slight cut-off to the end of the longer
berth but more noteworthy is the huge
wardrobe under this bed (there’s a shelved
cupboard under its neighbour). If you want a
simply huge double, there’s a neat lift-up-and-
over panel that extends the centre portion of
mattress to 1.70m long.
Much of the S697’s appeal will be on the road,
where the auto ’box and potent motor, along
with compact dimensions, will ensure that its
quick and easy to drive. The layout is nothing
new but the spec (including an awning and solar
panel) is comprehensive, even if the price isn’t
the bargain it once was. Still, sub-£70k keeps it in
the entry-level sector in 2024…

France. One of the largest caravan and
motorhome factories in Europe, it is
also home to Challenger motorhomes
(Chausson’s sister brand, which is not
sold here) and Caravelair caravans.
Chausson vehicles have been available
in the UK since 2003, with Britain being
the company’s second-largest export
market. With a reputation for strong value
and innovative design, the French maker
has also risen to become one of the top-
selling imported motorhome brands here.
Its range includes Fiat-based van
conversions, as well as low-profiles on
Ford or Fiat chassis, plus the X550 and
X650 campervan-sized motorhomes.

HAUSSON campervans have previously
been built by Auto-Trail alongside broadly
similar designs for Benimar and Roller
Team (as well as the home brand), but limited
capacity has seen production move to Italy
where the Trigano Group produces a wide range
of campers for its multiple marques. More
significantly, it also means a switch from rear
lounge layouts to continental designs with fixed
beds. This V594 is one of two models introduced
for the 2024 season, the alternative V597 being a
single bed model (but the same 5.99m length).
Both models come to Britain in plusher
Sport Line trim (the entry-level First Line
versions aren’t sold here) and they have a bold
look that encompasses Campovolo Grey paint,
alloy wheels and black graphics (with hexagon
patterns and lime highlights). The optional
pop-top turns the V594 into a family ’van for
an extra £5,790 and its roof bed measures
1.99m by 1.23m with his and hers adjoining
mattresses that are unusually thick, at 10cm.
A reading lamp with USB is also fitted up top.
Unusually, the Fiat base vehicle comes with
nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard
(mated to the 140hp engine). Traction Plus,
hill descent control, the Eco Pack (including
stop/start), cruise control and front fog lamps
are also included in the spec.
There are no surprises with the layout,
which features the European staple of a half-
dinette lounge and rear transverse double bed
(with the sliding door on the offside). Interior
décor is less traditional, though, with
automotive-style faux leather (including the
cab seats – our images show the French spec)
and contrasting black doors on the cabinets.
You sleep across the ’van in the stern on a
mattress measuring 1.85m by 1.47m (usable

prevent sitting up, but there are reading lamps
on the nearside. There are no side windows
here but the barn doors are glazed.
Beneath the bed, the gas locker is on the
nearside (you won’t use a lot of LPG as both
heating and boiler are fuelled by diesel) and
the 85-litre fresh water tank is on the offside,
while the central storage space measures 97cm
wide and 66cm high. For full-height load
carrying, simply remove the slats supporting
the centre of the bed.
The kitchen is in the usual space adjacent to
the sliding door and comes with a Dometic
two-burner hob and sink combination unit,
while to please us Brits an oven (not shown
here) has been added to the inventory. The
84-litre Thetford compressor fridge is
mounted at waist height with a wardrobe
(with 68cm drop) placed below.
In a sector where details count, the
washroom could be a deciding factor. Its
corner basin and opening window are pluses
but the shower hose on a riser bar (not using
the basin’s tap) and the bifold screen to cover
the loo (no curtain here) are the real
advantages.
To complete the spec on your Chausson
campervan add the Accessories Pack and
Connect Pack. The Accessories Pack (£3,590)
features the awning, solar panel, awning light,
flyscreen for the sliding door, cab blinds and
dinette bed. Then, the Connect Pack (£2,690)
comes with 9in multimedia touchscreen
including DAB radio, reversing camera, Apple
CarPlay, Android Auto and steering wheel
controls. But at over £70k with options there
are many other similar models to consider.

CMC HemBil GoCamper
As car-like as they come…
F
OR most campervan conversion companies,
small means a Ford Transit Custom or VW
Transporter, maybe a Renault Trafic. But, if
you’ve never driven anything bigger than a Fiesta
or Clio, even these vans might seem anything but
small. It’s not so much about the size, perhaps, as
the height of the driving position and the lack of
as much reassuring bonnet in front of you.
There are, of course, a number of conversion
pods on the market that can slide into the boot
of something like a Citroën Berlingo – or even an
ID Buzz if you want an EV with street cred – and
turn it into a makeshift camper. But, if you want
a proper conversion with a pop-top for standing
room, then your options are very limited.
It’s no surprise then that Concept Multi-Car
had quite a bit of success with its conversion of
the previous generation Volkswagen Caddy – a
van that feels more like a Golf. At the Caravan,
Camping and Motorhome Show, at the NEC, it
launched the successor – called GoCamper and
based on either the latest (fifth generation)
Caddy or its sister vehicle from Ford, the Grand
Tourneo Connect. In each case, it’s the
passenger car derivative, not the panel van,
that’s converted by CMC.

these were the first models developed under the
two companies’ commercial vehicle alliance,
which has since seen new Amarok/Ranger
pick-ups and which will sire a T7 Transporter
based on the latest Transit Custom. Unlike the
bigger vans, it’s Volkswagen power units under
the bonnet here – a 122hp 2-litre diesel or
114hp 1.5-litre petrol, while transmissions are
six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG
automatic. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version is
due to follow, mating the petrol engine with an
electric motor for 150hp and a claimed zero
emissions range of 68 miles.

WHO IS HEMBIL?
CMC (Concept Multi-
Car) first introduced
Reimo campervans and
the German company’s
market-leading
components (including
seats and roofs) to the UK in 1988. The
company was formed by Alf and Hilary
Shortland, who are still involved, but day-
to-day running of the business has now
passed to sons, Sam and Toby.
Under Sam’s direction, CMC has also
developed its own HemBil range
alongside proven Reimo designs. These
include the Escape (on a choice of Ford,
Renault or VW base vehicles), the Drift
and Dune, each with a hinged kitchen
that swings out through a second sliding
door, and the Urban and Urban-S.
Importantly, CMC puts safety as a top
priority. It uses the Reimo Variotech 3000
seat system, which has passed European
safety tests for seatbelt anchorage, seat
strength and Isofix, and Reimo roofs
that meet strict German TÜV standards.
Its conversions also come with a three-
year/36,000-mile warranty.

conversion is the same and in day to day use it
retains the versatility of the donor car with a
sliding door on each side and five belted seats.
With its car-park-friendly height (just 1.92m),
you could even keep your GoCamper in a
domestic garage, although it’s worth noting that
the overall length is only fractionally less than a
short-wheelbase VW T6.1.
The key part of the conversion is at the rear
offside, where you can reach the galley via the
lift-up tailgate. Here, the smart white units with
contrasting wood worktop incorporate a 20-litre
Vitrifrigo top-loading fridge, a small stainless-
steel sink (as used in the Urban and Urban-S
conversions on the Transporter) and a Carbest
single-burner hob. In a significant change over
CMC’s previous Caddy conversion, both of the
rear side windows are unobstructed by furniture,
so the camper feels much lighter inside.
There’s still a front-hinged Reimo pop-top to
give up to 2m standing room in the rear and
flyscreened vents on either side ensure plenty
of roof-level ventilation. An optional roof bed
(1.90m by 0.90m) can also be added for an
extra £695.
Down below, a bench is revealed when the
car’s back seat is folded forward and a further
forward-facing seat folds down from the nearside
wall. There’s even room to store a Porta Potti.
Then, at night, the camper’s seats convert into a
2.00m by 0.97m bed – a bit tight for two maybe,
but generous for one. If you prefer to keep an
aisle between the bed and the galley, that’s
possible with a 65cm-wide berth.
This is a truly compact campervan but a rear
tailgate awning adds extra living space (£240)
and blown-air heating is offered on diesel
models (£1,850). Standard spec includes a
12-litre fresh water carrier, storage for one
Campingaz 907 cylinder, mains hook-up and
a 60Ah lithium battery, and the conversion is to
CMC’s usual high standards.

Coachman Affinity One

Two years after the first Coachman motorhome comes its first campervan

WHO IS COACHMAN?

The first ever Coachman caravan was

built in a small factory in Hull in 1986.
In 2001, a management buyout saw
the company break away from its then
parent, the Explorer Group, and three
years later it invested £1.5m in an
extension at the factory.
However, the biggest change in its
history has a Swedish twist. Kabe Group
AB took a 21.5% share in the business in
2018 and, in February 2021, completed
a deal to buy the rest of the company.
This has led directly to the introduction
of Coachman’s first motorhomes, since
followed by the Affinity campervans.

C
ARAVAN manufacturer, Coachman,
entered the motorhome market in 2023
with its Travel Master – and immediately
scooped the Best Luxury Motorhome award. It
has now followed that up with a flagship A-class
and a more compact, 3.5-tonne model (see page
25), but perhaps most exciting of all is the first
Coachman campervan, the Affinity One.
Unlike the motorhomes, which are built in
Sweden, the campervan comes from OzorkÓw in
Poland. In Europe, Affinity is a separate brand –
which we’ve long admired when we’ve seen them
in Düsseldorf – but here the vehicles will be
badged Coachman. On the Continent, it also
offers six models on a mix of MAN and Fiat
Ducato panel vans; the One will be the first one to
come here, with selected other models to follow.
This is not just yet another lookalike imported
campervan, though. The example shown here is
left-hand drive (it was exhibited at the NEC in
February to get feedback) but right-hand drive
versions will be fully UK-handed with the sliding
door on our nearside.
Yes, it’s the ubiquitous Fiat that is the basis
here but it’s not just any Ducato; the 180hp engine
and automatic gearbox are included in the £86k
price tag. Standard spec also includes LED
headlights, front fog/cornering lights, the Safety
Pack, four-season tyres, climate control, the
electric parking brake, 16in alloy wheels, a leather
steering wheel, digital dashboard and a 10in
touchscreen with reversing camera.
This is also the biggest Ducato derivative, not
simply an L4 (6.36m long) but the extra-high H3,
while, to disguise the boxiness of the tallest van,
Affinity adds its own overcab pod with a sunroof
and smoother lines. There are flares at each side at
window level to increase the internal width, too,
and a Thule awning and 240W solar panel are also

standard. Then, at the rear, the barn doors open
onto an irregularly shaped under-bed boot area
that’s ideal for all your outdoor gear; internal
height there can be varied from 75cm to 1.15m.
So, the Affinity One is quite handsome on the
outside but it’s inside that it really stands out as
something special. That starts with the layout,
which has more of a motorhome feel about it and
includes a double floor as well as a sound-deadening
headlining and handmade Nordic Oak furniture.
The most conventional component is, perhaps,
the half-dinette lounge with swivel cab seats but,
even here, the high-backed rear passenger seat
with its comfortably inclined backrest strikes a
note of individuality, as does the table which lifts
out of the way to increase the impression of
space. Even neater is the way this bench
transforms into an extra bed (a version that
makes into bunk beds is also available).
The main bed is set to one side at the rear, so
it’s a French bed. That’s rare enough to see in a
campervan but here the bed rises and falls
electrically to adjust the size of the storage space
below. The mattress measures 1.88m by 1.25m.
Alongside the bed, in the back corner, is the
washroom with Dometic’s upmarket loo, a
wooden duckboard and a tip-up basin with gas
strut assistance. This space is also a fully lined
shower cubicle (no curtain required), while hot
water and space heating come from a Truma
Combi 4 E system. Water tanks are a good size
– 110 litres each – and insulated.
The L-shaped kitchen sits between the lounge
and bed and includes a 90-litre under-counter
fridge and a two-burner hob. There’s no oven but
a decent amount of worktop is provided – plus
acres more (and loads more storage) thanks to a
long sideboard opposite. Then there’s the quality
which seems superb throughout.

The original gets a little brother that you can drive on a car licence…

F you were tempted by Coachman’s first ever
motorhome, the award-winning Travel
Master, but wanted something a tad smaller
that could also be driven on a standard car
licence (with none of the other disadvantages of
a heavier vehicle), the company now has the
answer – the Travel Master Sportivo.
Launched at the February NEC show (we had
originally hoped to see it last October), the
Sportivo is, again, built in Sweden at the Kabe
factory and is based on its Novum range. Here,
though, for now at least, there’s just one model
– the 565, with single beds. An island bed
version (to match the choice in the Travel Master
Coachman Travel Master Sportivo 565
line-up) may follow.
Crucially, the new Sportivo is shorter and
narrower than its big brother but it still aims to
have all the luxury fittings and spec. Equally
important is the fact that it retains the (front-
wheel drive) Mercedes Sprinter chassis, complete
with the 170hp engine and nine-speed automatic
transmission – so competition comes primarily
from Carthago and Hymer. In 3.5-tonne
configuration the new Coachman is expected to
have a payload of around 300kg, while those
seeking more capacity will be able to upgrade to
a 4,500kg gross weight.
Although this is a smaller Coachman, it has a

clear family resemblance to the bigger ’vans and
it is, by any other measure, a full-sized model,
measuring almost seven and a half metres in
length. It has balanced aluminium side walls,
floor and roof with Ecoprim insulation and
carpet trim on the internal walls and, as you’d
expect with a Scandinavian vehicle, it has Alde
‘wet’ central heating. But that’s not all – here
there’s AGS II underfloor heating, too.
Externally, there’s a distinctive angular
roofline, framed habitation windows and a
140W solar panel, as well as a larger (fixed)
overcab Skyview window. Alloy wheels are

Of course, there’s a generous rear garage, as
you’d expect with a motorhome of this ilk, but
the loading doors’ shape (narrower at the
bottom) may impede the loading of some larger
items. Internally, there’s 1.07m headroom in
addition to useful shelves and adjustable tie-
down hooks.
Inside, it’s a typically continental layout with
twin beds above the rear garage and a half-
dinette-style lounge up front – a key point,
however, is that it’s UK-handed (the habitation
door is on the left side). Rather than opposing
shower and toilet areas at the foot of the beds,
it has a single unit for the ablutions, but it’s
clear both that the Sportivo has the same DNA
as the original Travel Masters and that, here
again, the model has been developed to suit
the UK market. Although there’s no habitation
air-conditioning this time, it still has a high
spec. Note, though, that this is a two-berth
(with four belted seats) – there’s no drop-down
bed in this model.
As in the bigger Travel Masters, the cab chairs
are in contrasting black leather, while a novel
feature is the folding table that hinges against the
offside wall. Then, backing onto the seating, is
an L-shaped galley with plenty of drawers, a
three-burners-in-line hob and a small oven/grill
mounted below the counter. Alongside is a tall,
slim fridge.
The washroom may place all the facilities in
one zone but it uses screens for the shower and
offers plenty of room to use the swivel cassette
loo. Water capacities are a little disappointing,
though, at 87 litres fresh and 90 litres for waste.
The rear beds aren’t found wanting, at 1.97m
long, and each one can be tipped up on a ratchet
system for chaise longue-style relaxing. In fact,
throughout, this newcomer feels like a Travel
Master, just a more manageable one. It seems
well priced for the spec, too.

ANBURY is one of the oldest names in
the campervan business and has long
been associated with VWs. Its back
catalogue, however, includes campers based on
Bedford, Fiat, Ford, Nissan, Renault, Seat and
Subaru vans and now, with its Final Edition
models signalling the end of T6.1 Volkswagen
conversions, it has returned to the Fiat Ducato
with its latest model, the Royale (a name
previously used on a VW T6 with rear toilet).
The new Royale is based on the six-metre,
long-wheelbase version of the ever-popular Fiat
and comes in two formats – the rear lounge
model shown here or, in place of that seating
area, you can have a raised fixed double bed with
garage below.
Both layouts come in Silver specification,
priced at £85,000, on a white 140hp van with
manual gearbox, or you can upgrade to Gold (for
an extra ten grand) to have a Lanzarote Grey
Ducato in Primo trim with the nine-speed
automatic gearbox. Even at £95k, however, there
are still options to consider – a Thule awning
(£1,500), leather upholstery (£2,500), sound
system (£1,200) and Remis cab blinds (£750). Or
go for all four options as a Lux Pack for £4,950.
Externally, this Silver version looks
unremarkable but it does come with alloy
wheels, framed habitation windows, a colour-
coded front bumper and neat, modern graphics.
There’s no overcab sunroof as the shelf above the
front seats is retained for storage.
Inside, the floorplan is a perennial UK
favourite with a half-dinette up front adding rear
travel seats as well as a second seating area for
when the back is made into a bed. That process
is simply one of sliding the two seat bases
together to form a 1.86m by 1.25m double bed
that’s reassuringly flat.
The front seating area can cater for four once
the cab seats have been swivelled and passengers
in the back will welcome the sliding window

here which can be opened while you travel. The
bench seat has some shape, the duo-tone
upholstery is nicely finished and the wall-
mounted table has an extension leaf. The
cabinetwork also mixes two colours – a dark
wood with mid-grey doors – while the headlining
is a plush leatherette. A full-width LED strip
above the cab ensures that this area isn’t gloomy
and a wind-up Heki rooflight is fitted over the
table.
The rear lounge is where you’ll want to
unwind on a fine day, with the back doors open.
A raised floor here ensures a comfortable height
for the settees as well as providing stowage for
the island leg table underneath. Scatter cushions
are provided and a roller shutter in the washroom
wall hides the TV cupboard.
Amidships, the galley includes plenty of
drawer-based storage as well as Staron solid
surface worktops, including a pop-out extension

WHO IS DANBURY?
The Danbury name comes from a small
town in Essex where this conversion
company began in 1964. Whilst it has
built campers on a wide variety of base
vehicles, it has a long association with
VWs and continued building on the classic
shape Type 2s (alongside a range of T6
models), sourcing vans from Brazil until
production finally ceased in 2013.
In 2017, the company was bought by
the Pilote Group and it briefly mixed
British-converted Fords and VWs with
French conversions on the Fiat Ducato. It
changed hands again in 2020, becoming
part of the Vanworx Group and is now
based in Somerset.

premium aspect of this conversion. Water tanks
are underslung and have capacities of 85 litres
(fresh) and 65 litres (waste), while also under the
’van is a 25-litre LPG tank. A 150W solar panel is

100Ah lithium one.
With dimmable lighting throughout and a
very high-quality finish, the Royale feels like an
upmarket alternative to mainstream campervans.
It’s pricey but Danbury plans to extend the
model’s appeal with additional variants, such as
a pop-top and a swamper.

WHO IS ESCAPE CAMPERS?

Escape Campers
launched in
November last year,
but its founders
already had many years of experience
in the campervan conversion industry.
It has financial backing from Blue
Light Services, one of the UK’s leading
ambulance conversion companies.
At the time of writing, Escape had
already carried out 25 conversions,
with the aim of doing four a week.
However, it insists it is a workshop, not
an assembly line, with each vehicle “a
labour of love”. You can either go with
a standard design or customise the
interior to create your own personal
look. Alternatively, you could have a ’van
built specifically for your needs on a VW,
Renault Trafic or Ford Transit Custom.

T
HE campervan market is crowded and, if
you’re a new converter, you need a
method to push your way to the front and
grab the attention of the ’van-buying public.
That’s certainly what Escape Campers has done
with the lilac colour of this T6.1 VW.
To say it’s eye-catching is something of an
understatement. As we inspected the ’van for this
review, we were regularly joined by passers-by keen
to have a look. Obviously, lilac is not everyone’s cup
of tea, but, for the most part, the feedback was
positive. ‘Nice to see something a bit different’, was
the prevailing view but if lilac is not to your taste,
Escape has plenty of other options available.
Of course, most people don’t buy a campervan
purely because they like the colour – or at least,
we hope not! The practicalities of the interior are
much more likely to inform your decision-
making than how pretty it looks, even if that’s
what first turns your head.
So, with that in mind, what does Escape
Campers have to offer? The Breeze+ is the
company’s top-of-the-range model, based on a
brand-new T6.1, which goes some way to
explaining the near-£70k price tag. It has a dual-
clutch (DSG) automatic gearbox and the base
vehicle features the Highline spec, including cab
air-conditioning, cruise control and electric/
heated mirrors. There are front fog lights with
cornering function and front and rear parking
sensors, while 16in alloy wheels and colour-
coded bumpers add to the aesthetic appeal. A
huge range of optional extras is available,
including a solar panel, heated seats, LED lights,
a reversing camera, bike racks and roof bars.
Escape’s focus is on family camping. The
Breeze+ sleeps up to four, with a double bed in
the Skyline elevating roof that would be ideal for
two small children. In warm weather, they’ll be

grateful for the three large ventilation panels.
Downstairs, there’s the so-often-seen
M1-tested RIB bench seat, which has seatbelts,
adjustable headrests and Isofix. It converts to a
double bed in about 20 seconds, simply by
folding the three sections flat, creating a
sleeping surface that measures 1.86m by 1.12m.
The front passenger seat can be swivelled, but
that’s still only three seats when camping... The
windows have dark coloured curtains, but there
is the option to upgrade to Vanshades blinds.
The dining table is stored in the boot when not
in use – not ideal when the area is full of
walking or welly boots (and other gear), or if it’s
raining when it comes to mealtimes.
The layout includes a standard side kitchen
with a typical combination sink and two-
burner hob, but it also features a microwave – a
rarity for a Transporter conversion. A 50-litre
front-loading Dometic fridge is fitted and water
comes from a 60-litre underslung tank.
The kitchen has a limited amount of worktop,
with a narrow strip in front of the cooker and an
area alongside the sink – the latter is not
especially convenient as it also incorporates a
top-loading cupboard. Storage-wise, there’s also
a drawer under the hob, a cupboard below the
microwave and two top lockers above the galley’s
window, all with flush-fitting doors, plus another
cabinet with a tambour door next to the back
seats. There’s more storage under the bench,
with a cubbyhole for the Porta Potti.
The Webasto diesel heater and 100mm
Rockwool insulation cater for cooler weather
and the camper’s electrics are controlled from
the Montana touchscreen control panel, which is
compatible with Android and iOS phones, and
there are a couple of USB slots in the back, along
with two mains sockets.

WHO IS RAPIDO?

Founded as a maker of folding caravans

in 1961, Rapido’s first motorhome
was launched in 1983. Since then, the
company has expanded to become a
wider group of leisure vehicle makers,
including Fleurette (from 2005), Itineo
(2006), Campérêve (2009), Westfalia
(2010), Dreamer (2014), Giottiline
(2016), and WildAx and Stylevan in
2017. However, despite such huge
expansion, this remains a family
business, with the third generation of
the Rousseau clan, Nicolas, joining his
father in the business in 2014.
The home of Rapido remains Mayenne
in northern France, where Itineo,
Dreamer and Rapido models are built.

AUNCHED in 2021, Rapido’s compact
range – the C Series – now numbers four
layouts (with transverse double, single beds
or an island), two of which are also available in
A-class form (now with the option of deleting
the drop-down bed in the cab). Here, though,
we’re focusing on the low-profile C55, which has
been enhanced for the 2024 season with a much
larger fridge.
Like the rest of the ‘C’ range, the C55 is just
2.17m wide and, although it’s the second
longest model in the line-up, its 6.72m length
is typical for a model with fixed single beds
over a garage at the rear. Just as importantly,
this is no economy-spec ’van. It has typical
Rapido styling with framed habitation
windows, aluminium side skirts, a huge glass
overcab sunroof and central locking on the
habitation door.
Rapido also considerably enhances the
standard spec for the UK market, to include
electric heating (as well as diesel), a heated
and insulated waste water tank, an oven/grill,
carpets, rear steadies and an external shower
in the garage. Then, in the Peugeot cab there’s
Traction Plus and Hill Descent Control, front
fog/cornering lights, and a leather steering
wheel with radio/phone controls. The Boxer
base vehicle comes with the 140hp HDi engine
and six-speed manual gearbox; you have to
switch to a pricier Fiat if you want the (also
pricey) nine-speed automatic gearbox.
You’ll still need to add the Select Pack,
though. For an additional £1,730 that adds a
glazed habitation door, second leisure battery,
cab blinds, a 6.8in touchscreen with Android
Auto and Apple CarPlay, a reversing camera,
ESC with ASR, Roll Over Mitigation,
Crosswind Assist, towing stability control and
automatic post-collision braking, plus both
cab seats come with twin armrests as well as
height adjustment.

An important part of a model like this is the
rear garage, here featuring loading doors on
either side, fixed lashing points, the gas locker,
the leisure batteries and habitation electrics
and, most importantly, headroom of 1.20m
(plenty for cycles). The extra cushion for the
front bed stows here against the back wall.
Maximum weight in the garage is 150kg, while
the overall payload is a pretty generous 600kg.
Inside the comfortable living area, a wind-
up Heki rooflight over the lounge and the
biggest of big overcab sunroofs make the
lounge light and airy, while artificial lighting
is even better – there are downlights, reading
lights in the cab, LED strips under the top
lockers, ambient lights and a swivelling lamp
over the table.
The rear seating is L-shaped and, in
addition to the swivel cab chairs, there’s also a
flip-up jump seat by the entrance – better,
perhaps, as a foot stool than an actual seat.
The table folds in half to become an ideal
surface for coffees – or un verre du vin! The
only negative here is the slightly odd trio of
floor levels – the cab (highest), the main
living area (lowest) and a mid-height under
the table.

into the bedroom area, which can be entirely
separated with a pair of sliding doors, and
then two more to ease access into the twin
beds. These are of unequal lengths – 1.86m on
the nearside and a more generous 1.94m
opposite, although the mattress here tapers
slightly at the foot. Again, a roof vent and
windows on either side, plus plenty of artificial
lighting, make for a light interior – especially
so with this Nuceo furniture option (Nacarat
is the optional darker wood with white locker
doors). It’s just a shame that you can’t sit up in
bed as there are overhead lockers along the
back wall but that is so often the case in this

type of layout.
There’s a large cupboard under the nearside
bed, while a wardrobe (with top and front
access) is under the foot of the offside berth.
It’s a good-sized space with an 83cm drop
from its hanging rail.
You can also convert the lounge into a third
berth (1.88m by a maximum of 1.10m) but it’s
a fairly fiddly process (aren’t they all?) that
rather makes you wish for a drop-down bed
instead. As it also blocks the entrance,
consider it a bed for very occasional use (a
visiting grandchild?) only.
In the centre of the C55 is Rapido’s clever

Duo’Space washroom. In here there’s plenty of
room to use the swivel cassette loo and good
space around the white oval basin, too, but the
best bit is the swing-wall design for the
shower. There’s only a single outlet in the
shower tray but there’s room to flail your arms
as you wash your hair, without injuring
yourself, and Rapido even fits a basket on the
wall for your Head and Shoulders.
As you might expect in this class of
motorhome, the final aspect – the galley
(running aft of the door on the offside) – is
quite compact, but it does have a proper oven
(with a grill, too, and mounted sensibly below

There’s a slot-in extension to provide a tad
more workspace but, in reality, more
adventurous cooking is likely to mean
spreading preparation onto the table.
The storage here is in large drawers –
yippee! – which are centrally locked at the
touch of a button – yippee again! – but the star
feature of the kitchen is undoubtedly the new
feature for 2024, the 140-litre Vitrifrigo
compressor fridge with its separate bottle
drawer (last year’s C55 had only 85 litres of
cooled capacity).

OU might expect a campervan named
after a Greek god to be something special
and, with a price tag (as shown) of
£137,760, the Adonis is certainly competing at
the very top of its sector. Its base vehicle is
familiar – a Mercedes Sprinter in sub-6m
iteration – but its converter’s name, Robeta, is
unlikely to be known to readers.
This is a Slovenian company that exhibited
in the UK for the very first time at the February
NEC show. It was there to test reaction and
appoint dealers, ready for the first right-hand
drive vehicles to arrive in June.
At first glance then, this is another fixed bed
campervan from the Continent, although
there’s much to make it stand out from lesser
rivals. In Germany (its main market), it sees
premium brands such as La Strada and
Westfalia as the key opposition.
Let’s start with the base vehicle, which comes
with the 190hp engine, LED headlamps, fog/
cornering lights and an electric sliding door.
The cab seats (with twin armrests) are heated
and there’s Thermotronic automatic air-
conditioning, as well as wireless phone
charging, the 10.25in MBUX display with sat-
nav, plus a 360-degree camera system for
stress-free manoeuvring. All the assistance
safety systems are here, too – blind spot,
crosswind, lane keeping, attention, high beam
and hill start, plus adaptive cruise control.
It looks the part, with multi-spoke alloy
wheels, Tenorite Grey metallic paint (Selenite
Grey or Obsidian Black are also available) and
distinctive bronze graphics. There are framed
habitation windows and flares on either side to
create more space in the bedroom. The pop-top
is an £8,690 option for those needing the extra
berths – it incorporates a 2.20m by 1.45m
double bed with USBs, lighting, a clock and
extendable ladder.

Mobil started
by designing
interiors for other
manufacturers before developing its
own range of premium campervans.
Today, the firm from Slovenj Gradec
in Slovenia manufactures around 700
vehicles per year, with two thirds of
production going to Germany. It is
represented in most European countries
and launched onto the Canadian market
last year.
Its range includes Dionysos, Ares,
Helios, Kronos and Apollo models, as
well as the new Adonis. Base vehicles
are the Fiat/Citroën/Opel vans from
Stellantis in addition to Mercedes-Benz.
Its flagship is the Schumacher Edition,
developed with input from former F1
driver, Ralf Schumacher.

furniture, manufactured from recycled plastic.
This was developed for light weight as well-
equipped campervans can struggle for payload
at 3,500kg, especially when based on premium
chassis like the Merc. The company claims this
cabinetry can save up to 220kg, as well as
eliminating issues such as squeaks on the road
and loose screws. It is also covered with a
0.6mm skin of scratch-resistant HPL.
The colour scheme here isn’t the only option,
though – there are six permutations available,
each harmoniously mating cupboards, flooring,
upholstery, walls and ceiling. Then there’s
Kerrock (artificial marble) used for the
worktops and the clever way that the kitchen
extends, not with a flimsy flap, but by the sink’s
cover sliding to one side, so there’s no loss of
worktop space when the sink is in use.
Up front, this might be a half-dinette-type
lounge but the rear seats are automotive in style
and shape, they slide apart to give more
shoulder room when required, and Isofix is
fitted. Or you can have the For Two version,
with a sofa and extra storage, if you don’t
require rear seatbelts.
The washroom is special, too, incorporating
a ceramic macerator toilet and a 180-degree
bifold door in glass, while the rear transverse
bed features a tip-up head section for chaise
longue-style reclining with a cuppa – just like
in the best A-classes.
You’ll have gathered by now that this is a
truly top-notch ’van and its spec also includes
a 230W solar panel, 100Ah lithium battery,
electric drain valves on the water tanks, and
25mm Armaflex insulation.
For those wanting even more, there’s an Off
Road Package, which includes a rear wheel
carrier, Maxtrax recovery tracks, a shovel, roof
rack, front bull bar and additional vehicle
lighting. That makes the Adonis into one mean-
looking ’van!

Buying advice
The price is right
What is your current campervan worth? And are you getting a good deal on that potential
purchase? Rachel Scholes looks at how you can assess the prices of secondhand ’vans…
I
f you are looking to sell your motorhome, setting
an accurate value is always tricky, although it’s
been made much easier by the internet. The
same goes when buying a motorhome, as you’ll
want to work out if the price of your intended
purchase is fair – you won’t want to pay too much
but a very low price is almost certainly indicative of
a scam, so take care.
The problem is that there’s a vast variety of makes

and models on sale each year – we list 812 different
motorhomes and 461 campervans in our 2024
buyers’ guide! – and some will only sell in tiny
numbers. In fact, with 12,179 new vehicles registered
in 2023 (according to NCC data), that’s an average of
each model selling just 10 units. Obviously, some
popular models from mainstream brands will sell in
greater volumes but, in contrast, Nissan sold 8,931
Qashqais in the month of March alone.
Then there are options and accessories added at
the time of sale, as well as afterwards, before we
even consider condition. So, it is unlikely that there
will be two secondhand ’vans available at the same
time that are exactly the same.
So how do you value your own motorhome or
campervan or one that you’re planning to buy? It’s
time to do some research…
TIMES HAVE CHANGED
In a normal world, motorhome values generally
follow a curve. In the first couple of years, values
drop faster and then depreciation would normally
even out or, perhaps, even virtually stop. Recently,
though, prices of new ’vans have reached record
highs. For example, a Bailey Autograph 81-6 was
listed at £63,145 in 2020 but entered the 2024
season at £88,999, while an Auto-Trail Scout rose
from £73,444 in 2019 to £100,454 this year. And
we’re not picking on these manufacturers, or
suggesting that they’re reaping the rewards – costs
have skyrocketed (chassis prices especially) and
those increases have had to be passed on to
customers. Many makers have had fewer vehicles to
sell, too (squeezing profit margins) – annual UK
motorhome registrations peaked at 14,074 in 2021.
 Secondhand motorhome prices

Demand is still strong and, since Covid, poor

availability of base vehicles (especially the dominant
Fiat Ducato) has seen it exceed supply. Meanwhile,
increased new prices have seen the values of
secondhand motorhomes harden. The biggest gains
have been seen on vehicles aged between five and
10 years old, but almost all ages and models have
seen significant gains in value. And, if the layout or
style of your ’van is more desirable – campervans
with washrooms, compact models with drop-down
beds, and fixed single bed layouts are especially
popular – then values will be even greater.
Recently, it hasn’t been rare to trade in a ’van and
get back close to what you originally paid for it.
That’s great news if you have a ’van to sell but, if
you’re trading up to a newer model, the cost to
change may have risen substantially more than
you’re expecting.

THE £50,000 QUESTION

Looking at the Motorhomes For Sale section of our
website outandaboutlive.co.uk the bulk of vehicles
available are priced above £30,000, with only around
3% being under £20k. That does mean that your
choice will be much more limited if your budget is
restricted but, if you’ve got an older, low-cost
motorhome or campervan to sell, you are competing
with far fewer models. However, the bulk of website
views are for motorhomes costing over £50k, so don’t
fret if you are selling a more expensive model, there
are still plenty of buyers out there.
In terms of accessories, remember that a roof
air-con unit costing £2,500 might add very little
extra to a vehicle’s used value, while features such as
roll-out awnings and reversing cameras have
become expected by buyers, so it may just be the
case that it’s harder to sell a ’van without these.
One option that can certainly add a premium on
a pre-owned motorhome is an automatic gearbox.
The spec will have been enhanced but the list price of
an Auto-Trail Scout has risen by nearly 37% since 2019
Although now widely available on new models,
used ’vans with an auto’ gearbox are relatively rare
– and harder to find the older/cheaper you go. But,
as so many of us now drive an automatic car, two-
pedal driving is sought after by an increasing
number of campervan and motorhome buyers.
As your motorhome gets older, it is its condition
that is (almost) everything, along with proof of its
careful and regular maintenance. Signs of water
ingress will decimate a vehicle’s value (due to the
cost of repairs) and, for some buyers (especially city
dwellers), older diesel vehicles may become a no-no
due to low emission zone requirements. It’s the

popular brands are likely to be easier to resell because
buyers will know what they’re getting and may search
the web for that make or model. Campervans that are
registered as a ‘motor caravan’ and not a ‘van with
windows’ will be worth more, too, as will those that

converted from a tradesman’s workhorse some time
later). And, before you commission that one-off build,
do ask yourself if you’ll be able to find another buyer
with similar tastes and needs…

common problem on older coachbuilts, and should
be relatively easy to identify (spongy floors and a
distinct smell), or take a damp meter with you. Ask
for recent servicing and damp check certificates,
check the ownership if buying privately (does the
viewing address match the V5?) and, if the deal
either seems too good to be true or you feel uneasy
about anything, it’s best to walk away. Less than half the price of a new one…

ARMAPLATE RESOLUTE GOLD £199

Remember Krookloks? They were all the rage in the 1980s when vehicles had poor locks and little else
in the way of security. This new device, called the Resolute, from Armaplate, is a new version on the
same theme, locking the brake pedal to the steering wheel and providing a very visible deterrent to
thieves. At a time when the criminal fraternity seem to find ways around electronic security, this could
be very welcome, especially as it has a Sold Secure Gold award to prove that it won’t easily be defeated.
It’s said to be lighter than other steering locks (but will still need to be stowed properly for travel to
avoid damage or injury in an accident) and comes with a lifetime guarantee. Fitting it in our VW T6
seemed easy enough and Armaplate says it will fit virtually any car, campervan or motorhome.
However, there was insufficient clearance to the dashboard to fit it to the Editor’s car and it is not
compatible with classic vehicles where a non-airbag wheel leaves big gaps between the spokes.

PER PAIR Now, here’s a really clever bit of kit that could prove
super-useful and which its maker says is unique. It’s
truly multifunctional, too.
Firstly, the CS Free is a regular battery charger,
which many of us need for a vehicle that isn’t being
driven day to day. Just attach it to your vehicle battery
at one end and the mains supply at the other. However,
unlike conventional battery chargers and maintainers,
you can disconnect the 230V supply and it will keep
charging your ’van – it is a portable unit with its own
internal battery. That’s great if you’re staying off-grid
engine, you can then use the CS Free’s boost function
to start it within 15 minutes but, unlike most
conventional boosters or jump starters, this won’t
damage your vehicle battery or the ’van’s delicate
ECUs. Your battery is analysed automatically by the
unit and the right amount of charge is supplied in a
safe way.
Afterwards, CTEK recommends recharging the CS
Free straight away – which you can do immediately,
by simply plugging it into your vehicle’s cigarette
lighter. And, once recharged, the unit will keep its
