USES OF WATER FROM THE DIFFERENT SOURCES
READ AND ANALYZE:
Water comes from different sources. It may come from open or closed sources. It may also come
from a small body of water or a big body of water. Rainwater comes from clouds.
KINDS OF WATER
1. Seawater is salty. It contains plenty of salt. It is found in the sea and oceans. It is also called hard
water.
2. Freshwater is also called surface water. It does not contain salt. It is found in open but small bodies
of water like rivers, lakes, creeks, and ponds. It comes mostly from rain.
3. Groundwater is found beneath the earth’s surface. It comes from water that seeps into the ground.
These accumulate in the underground layer called water table. It is the safe source of water. It is the
cleanest water and contains plenty of dissolved minerals which the human body needs. However due to
contaminants, groundwater is treated and tested periodically for sanitation and good health.
Natural Sources of Water
1. River- it is a small body of water that leads to an ocean or sea. The bottom part of the river is called
riverbed while its sides are called riverbanks.
2. Stream- it is also running water but smaller than rivers. You can even walk across some streams
with very shallow waters.
3. Pond- it is generally smaller and shallower than a lake. Its shallow waters allow sunlight to reach the
bottom part of a pond, hence, allowing plants to grow.
4. Lake- it is deeper and larger than a pond. Little amount of sunlight reaches the bottom of the lake.
Fewer plants grow in the deeper part of a lake.
5. Ocean- it is a large expanse of saltwater that covers three-fourths of the surface of Earth. Saltwater is
a complex mixture of 96.5% water, 2.5% salts and smaller amounts of other substances, including
dissolved inorganic and organic materials.
Oceans and seas are bodies of water that have dissolved salts in it. These dissolved salts make up the
saltwater.
Other Sources of Water
1. Clouds- it comes from evaporated water
2. Iceberg - solid water found only in very cold countries.
3. Glaciers
Two Important Sources of Water Supply
1. Surface water is any body of water above ground, including streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands,
reservoirs, and creeks. The ocean, despite being saltwater, is also considered surface water.
2. Ground water is a good source of potable drinking water. However due to contaminants,
groundwater is treated and tested periodically for sanitation and good health.
Uses of Freshwater
1. It used for cleaning, washing, bathing, preparing food and other household uses. 2. Sustains plant and
animal life.
3. For recreation.
4. Use as routes for transportation like boats.
5. For irrigation of farms.
Uses of Seawater
1. It produces 80% of the oxygen we breathe because of planktons, the tiny organisms that live in the
oceans and seas.
2. The habitat of aquatic plants and animals.
3. For recreation.
4. Routes for local and international transportation and marine navigation.
