Alarm Parameters
• Each individual alarm prompts the operator for the
following.
– Setpoint: the violation value.
– Action: defines the alarm action, (STOP, STOP+LOG,
LOG, BYPASS)
– Retry Number: sets the number of restarts allowed
before lockout.
– Retry Time: the time delay before automatic start
– Start Delay: a bypass delay on startup.

Average Amps Average Volts
• Displays the average of the 3 • Displays the average of the 3
phase currents and the phase voltages and the
status of the overload and status of the overvolt and
underload alarm. undervolt alarm.
20 Initials
3/24/2006
Starting Current
• Captures the high current average attained during the
last start.
• The value is equivalent to the motors “locked rotor”
current.
• As the pump gets older and begins to wear this value
of current will increase which can be useful in
predicting immanent failures.
21 Initials
3/24/2006
Stall alarm
• Usually set at 3 times the motor rated current, with a
time delay equal to twice the motor acceleration time.
• Provides faster protection against a locked pump shaft
than a typical overload set point.
22 Initials
3/24/2006
Short Circuit alarm
• Usually set at 6 times rated motor current with no time
delay.
• Provides instantaneous protection to the electrical
system in the event of a short circuit.
• If not protected, short circuit current can be extremely
high and detrimental to other electrical machines on
the same power system.

Frequency
• Monitors the frequency of AC voltage supplied to the
motor.
• A high and low frequency shutdown alarm provides
protection against power supply abnormalities.
27 Initials
3/24/2006
Supply voltage
• Displays the 120 volt nominal supply voltage.
• Hi Supply alarm provides protection to the control
circuitry.
• Low Supply alarm will disconnect power to the
contactor coil to avoid open-close ratcheting during
power brownouts.
28 Initials
3/24/2006
Low power factor
• This alarm is useful for determining underloaded
operation (flowing well).
• useful to monitor this alarm in the historical event
logger without necessary shutting the pump down.
29 Initials
3/24/2006
Spin
• Displays the motor spin frequency and direction
(forward or reverse) when the motor has been
shutdown.
• Spin is useful in determining the correct pump rotation
on initial start-up.
• The spin alarm provides protection against twisting
shafts and motor damage by preventing the motor
from starting if it is back spinning.
30 Initials
3/24/2006
Leg ground
• Displays the phase to ground voltage unbalance in
percent when the motor is running.
• The displayed reading is indicative of insulation
degradation and ground fault problems. The larger the
reading, the worse the ground fault.
• Alarm provides protection to other components prior
to imminent failure.
31 Initials
3/24/2006
Loop two, hi and low alarms
• Provides additional protection to other analog signals.
• Some examples are:
– low bottom hole pressure
– low flow rate
– high flow rate
– high ground fault current
– high internal motor temperature
32 Initials
3/24/2006
Relay output status
• A diagnostic view screen that displays the status of all
controller output relays.
• If any switch is shorted to ground due to a wiring fault,
the Circuit alarm will occur and stop the motor.
• This simplifies troubleshooting and prevents control
power fuse failures in the event of a fault.
33 Initials
3/24/2006
Historical alarm Logging
• Alarm and time stamp history.
• All alarm setpoint violations are displayed in a 200 line
sequential table listing the event, the duration and the
time of occurrence.
• Useful in troubleshooting problem wells.
• Vortex records last 5 shutdowns, but they are not time
stamped

Time Delay Curves
• Improved protection with greater flexibility
• 16 point Overload curve.
– Vortex offers a 7 point curve
• 8 point Voltage Unbalance curve
– Vortex does not provide a curve
