Two wires of ...

Question

Two wires of resistance R1 and R2 have

temperature coefficient of resistance α1 and α2 ,
respectively. These are joined in series. The
effective temperature coefficient of resistance is

α1 + α 2
A
2

B √ α1 α2

α 1 R1 + α 1 R 2
C
R1 + R 2

√R1 R2 α1 α2
D
√R21 + R22

Solution

α1 R1 + α1 R 2
The correct option is C
R1 + R 2

Step 1: Resistance of wire 1 and 2

Resistance of wire 1,

R′1 = R1 [1 + α1 t]

Resistance of wire 2,

R′2 = R2 [1 + α2 t]

Step 2: Calculate equivalent resistance

Now, since the wires are joined in series,

R′eq = R′1 + R2 '

R′eq = R1 [1 + α1 t] + R2 [1 + α2 t]

R′eq = R1 + R2 + (R1 α1 )t + (R2 α2 )t

R1 α1 + R 2 α 2
R′eq = (R1 + R2 ) [1 + ( )] . (i)
R1 + R 2

Also,

Req ' = Req [1 + αeff t] … (ii)

Comparing equation (𝑖) and equation (𝑖𝑖)

We get,

R1 α1 + R 2 α 2
αeff =
R1 + R 2

Hence, option (c) is correct.
