Section D
IX. Case -based study questions: (5x3=15)
A. Friction is a force between two surfaces that are sliding, or trying to slide, across each other. Friction always
works in the direction opposite to the direction in which the object is moving or trying to move. It always slows
a moving object down.
Friction also produces heat. If you rub your hands together quickly, you will feel them get warmer. Friction can
be a useful force because it prevents our shoes from slipping on the pavement when we walk and stops car tyres
skidding on the road. When you walk, friction is caused between the tread on shoes and the ground. This friction
acts to grip the ground and prevent sliding. Sometimes we want to reduce friction. For example, we use oil to
reduce the friction between the moving parts inside a car engine. In many machines, friction is reduced by using
ball bearings. The reduced friction means there is less wear on the moving parts and less heat produced.
i) When does friction arise?
ii) Why should we apply oil on the hinges of the door?
iii) Gymnasts apply some coarse substance on their hands. Why?
iv) Explain why sportsmen use shoes with spikes.
B. The discovery of atmospheric pressure gives a fact that air has weight. The weight of the atmosphere presses
down on the earth’s surface and creates pressure on it. The pressure at any point exerted by the weight of the air
above is called atmospheric pressure.
The atmospheric pressure on the earth’s surface at sea level is one hundred thousand pascals i.e., 100 KPa. The
Final Exam/Class 8/Science/ Page 4 of 6
atmospheric pressure at a place decrease with an increase in altitude. The atmospheric pressure at a place is the
force exerted by the weight of the air column above that place. As we go up the length of the air column above us
decreases. This means that its weight and the atmospheric pressure are smaller at higher places than at sea level. If
the pressure of the atmosphere is removed suddenly, our blood vessels and tissues will rupture due to the pressure
of the blood and other fluids inside. Thus, the spacemen also wear special pressurized suits as in space there is no
air and hence, no air pressure. At the top of a mountain, some people can feel their ears “popping” due to a
decrease in air pressure. The ears pop to balance the difference in pressure inside and outside the body.
Answer the questions given below:

a) What is atmospheric pressure?

b) We know that there is a huge amount of atmospheric pressure on us. But we do not experience its effect.
Why?
c) Why do some people feel their ears “popping” at the top of the mountain?

C. A great variety of plants and animals exist on earth. They are essential for the well-being and survival of
mankind. Today, a major threat to survival of these organisms is deforestation. We know that deforestation means
clearing of forests and using that land for other purposes. Trees in the forest are cut for some of the purposes
mentioned below:
 Procuring land for cultivation.
 Building houses and factories.
 Making furniture or using wood as fuel.
Some natural causes of deforestation are forest fires and severe droughts. Deforestation increases the temperature
and pollution level on the earth. It increases the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Ground water level also
gets lowered. They know that deforestation disturbs the balance in nature. They were told by Professor Ahmad
that if cutting of trees continues, rainfall and the fertility of the soil will decrease. Moreover, there will be
increased chances of natural calamities such as floods and droughts. Recall that plants need carbon dioxide for
photosynthesis. Fewer trees would mean that less carbon dioxide will be used up resulting in its increased amount
in the atmosphere. This will lead to global warming as carbon dioxide traps the heat rays reflected by the earth.
The increase in temperature on the earth disturbs the water cycle and may reduce rainfall. This could cause
droughts. Deforestation is a major cause which leads to the change in soil properties. Physical properties of the
soil get affected by plantation and vegetation. Fewer trees result in more soil erosion. Removal of the top layer of
the soil exposes the lower, hard, and rocky layers. This soil has less humus and is less fertile. Gradually the fertile
land gets converted into deserts. It is called desertification. Deforestation also leads to a decrease in the water
holding capacity of the soil. The movement of water from the soil surface into the ground (infiltration rate) is
reduced. So, there are floods. The other properties of the soil like nutrient content, texture etc., also change
because of deforestation.

1) Which among the following are some of the natural causes of deforestation?
(a)Reusing (b) Recycling (c) Plantation (d) Forest fires
2) Due to the process of soil erosion fertile land gradually gets converted into deserts. This process is called
(a) Desertification (b) Extinction (c) Eradication(d) Denitrification
3) Water holding capacity soil………… due to deforestation.
(a) Increases (b) Decreases (c) Remains the same (d) None of the above
4) What are the effects of deforestation on the environment?
5) Mention any one reason for cutting of trees in forest.
