with FibroScan VCTE
Quick Card
FibroScan ® VCTE ™ by Echosens is an integrated
module on the LOGIQ™ S8 XDclear™ 2.0 ultrasound
system, located in the console under the operator
panel. There are two probes supported for acquiring
fibrosis measurements – the M+ and XL+ probes.
This guide is meant to assist the user in performing
quick and reproducible measurements.

1. The FibroScan module is located in the console under the operator 3. Acquire an image of the rt lobe of the liver or select an image of the rt
panel. FibroScan probes can be plugged directly into this module in lobe from the clipboard; freeze; activate the FibroScan module on the
either of the available ports. operator panel. The monitor will automatically display a dual screen
with ultrasound image on the left.

2. Patient should be fasting 3 hours prior to exam and be positioned

supine with the right arm abducted over the head with a slight
bend of the torso to the left side to open up the intercostal space
for better access.

4. Place the FibroScan probe in the mid axillary line approximately at the
level of the xiphoid process – holding the probe perpendicular, using
adequate pressure and positioned over the liver.

5. Select the correct probe and place on the patient. Look at graphics to 6. Keep the probe perpendicular to the skin surface.
confirm correct pressure and good quality acquisition. Utilize the pre-measurement indicators covered on page 4 to know
when conditions are optimal to acquire measurements. When all the
conditions are met — “3 P rule” — measurement can be triggered:
Position of the probe over liver
Pressure
Perpendicularity

There are two probes available: M+ and XL+. Choose which to use based
on guidelines and the Automatic probe indicator.

7. Press the measure button on the probe to acquire the liver measurement.
Repeat this 10 times. Check the probe perpendicularity along both axes.
Probe recommendation is based on real time SCD (Skin-to-liver Capsule Check the elastograms. The shear wave propagation should be visible
Distance) and operates in real time as soon as the probe detects ultra- throughout the depth of the elastogram. The sides of the black strip
sound signals (probe in contact with patient skin). representing the shear wave must be parallel. Results
are available on screen and in the worksheet.
Note: If the probes are changed during the FibroScan exam, any mea-
surements acquired from previous probe will be discarded.

Interpreting the FibroScan Pre-Measure Guidance:

1. Probe/Pressure Indictor: Indicator of adequate probe to skin
pressure and which probe is active.

2. Time Motion Mode: Reflected ultrasound graphic display of depth

over time. Look for homogeneous smooth pattern indicating good 1 6
liver positioning. 4

3. Amplitude Mode: Display of ultrasound signal strength. Looking

for a good consistent signal strength indicating good probe
positioning with adequate gel coupling.

4. Liver Targeting Tool: When both of these bars are green, this
5
indicates overall good condition, perpendicularity and contact.

5. Shear Wave Propagation Map: Indicates the shear wave

generated in a ratio of how far/how fast.

6. Probe Calibration Indicator: These are seen only when there is

an action needed by the operator. They will indicate the status of
the probe selected for the exam.

FibroScan Result Window

• Stiffness (E) 1.7-75 kPa
• CAP (dB/m) 100-400 dB/m
Controlled Attenuation Parameter is a measure of signal
attenuation rate
• Median of all valid measurements within the current exam
which is updated in real time after each measurement
• IQR (kPa or dB/m) of all valid measurements within the
current exam
• IQR/med. (%) = IQR/Median Ratio
Must remain < 30% for E only if median E > 7.1 kPa1
Reflects the dispersion of stiffness (E) measurements.
There is no criteria for CAP.
• Number of valid and invalid measurements
