Coordinate geometry

You should be aware of these points very well

Gradient
Y-intercept
1- Finding the gradient
𝒚𝟐 −𝒚𝟏
a) If 2 points are given, you can use the formula 𝒙𝟐 −𝒙𝟏
b) If the equation of the straight line is given in the form y=mx + c , hence the gradient is m
c) If the equation of the straight line is given but it’s not in the form of y=mx + c, rearrange the equation to make y the
subject. Then the coefficient of x is the gradient.

For example:
Straight line L has equation 3x + 2y = 4, find the gradient.

Put the equation in the form y= mx + c

2y= -3x + 4
−𝟑 −𝟑
y= 𝒙 + 𝟐, hence the gradient is
𝟐 𝟐

2- Finding the equation of the straight line

To find the equation of the straight line you should have

a) gradient of the straight line
b) point lies on the line or y-intercept

3- If the straight line intersects either x-axis or y-axis

a) If the line intersects x-axis, y-coordinate will be 0
b) If the line intersects y-axis, x-coordinate will be 0

For example:

Line L has equation y= 4x – 3, line L intersects x-axis at point B. Find the coordinates of
point B.

Put y=0 in the equation, find x-coordinate0 = 4x – 3 4x = 3 , hence x =

4- If a straight line intersects either a line with equation x = a or y = b

In case line L meets line x = a, replace x in the equation of L with a.
In case line L meets line y = b, replace y in the equation of L with b.

For example:

Line L has equation 3x + 2y = 4 meets the line with equation x = 3 at point B. Find the coordinates of B

3x + 2y = 4, replace x = 3 3(3) + 2y = 4 9 + 2y = 4
2y = 4 – 9
2y = -5
