Summer Vacation Home-Assignment

2024-25

CLASS: Xll SUBJECT: PHYSICS

1. Assignment should be written by the student in his/her own

words.
2. Holiday Homework should be submitted as soon as School
reopens.
3. Periodic Test –I grades will be awarded on Holiday H.W.
Assignments & Projects.

1) Total charge – Q is uniformly spread along length of a ring of

radius R. A small test charge +q of mass m is kept at the center
of the ring and is given a gentle push along the axis of the ring.
a) Show that the particle executes a simple harmonic
oscillation.
b) Obtain its time period.
2) Two charges -q each are fixed separated by distance 2d. A third
charge q of mass m placed at the mid-point is displaced slightly
by x (x<<d) perpendicular to the line joining the two fixed
charges. So that q will perform simple harmonic oscillation of

3) Consider a sphere of radius R with charge density distributed as
ρ (r) = kr for r≤R

= 0 for r> R.
a) Find the electric field at all points r.
b) Suppose the total charge on the sphere is 2e where e is
the electron charge. Where can two protons be
embedded such that the force on each of them is zero.
Assume that the introduction of the proton does not alter
the negative charge distribution.
4) Five charges, q each are placed at the corners of a regular
pentagon of side a and distance of any corner from center O is
r.
a) i) what will be the electric field at O, center of the
pentagon?
ii) What will be the electric field at O if the charge from
one of the corners is removed?
iii) What will be the electric field at O if the charge q at
any of the corner is replaced by -q?
b) how would your answer to (a) be affected if pentagon is
replaced by n sided regular polygon with charge q at each
of its corners?
5) Two charges q and -3q are placed fixed on X axis separated by
distance d. where should a third charge 2q be placed such that
it will not experience any force?
6) Calculate potential on the axis of a ring due to charge Q
uniformly distributed along the ring of radius R.
7) Two charges q1 and q2 are placed at(0,0,d) and (0,0,-d)
respectively. Find locus of points where the potential is zero.
8) Prove that a closed equipotential surface with no charge within
itself must enclosed an equipotential volume.
9) A capacitor has some dielectric between its plates and the
capacitor is connected to a DC source. The battery is now
disconnected and then the dielectric is removed. State whether
the capacitance, the energy stored in it, electric field, charge
stored and the voltage will increase, decrease or remain
constant.
10) A capacitor is made of two circular plates of radius R each
separated by a distance d <<R. The capacitor is connected to a
constant voltage. A thin conducting disc of radius r<<R and
thickness t<<r is placed at a center of the bottom plate. Find
the minimum voltage required to lift the disc if the mass of the
disc is m.
