Problem 1:
A 1-m-long curved gate is located in the side
of a reservoir containing water as shown in
the Figure. Determine the magnitude and
line of action of the resultant force acting on
the gate?
-Solution-
Given : w = 1 m , R = 2 m, h = 6 m
Find: on the curved gate
= = 146.9 KN

( solution using free body diagram of the

water block)
From the free body diagram of the water
block, the summition of forces in the x-
direction is:

To calculate , the summition of forces in

the y- direction is

= = 146.9 KN

Line of action of horizontal force FH = line of action of Fx

The Line of action of the vertical force Fv is found by summing moments about
C

From tables for the

Problem 2:
A tank wall has the shape shown in the Figure.
Determine the horizontal and vertical
components of the force of the water on a 1.5 m
wide of the curved section AB.
-Solution-
Given : w = 1.5 m , R = 2 m, h = 6 m

Find: on the curved gate

Problem 3:
An open tank containing water has a bulge in its vertical side that is semicircular
in shape as shown in Figure below. Determine the horizontal and vertical
components of the force that the water exerts on the bulge. Base your analysis on
a 1.25 m wide of the bulge.
-Solution-

Given : w = 1.25 m , R = 1 m, D = 2 m
Find: on the curved gate

= 73.575 KN

You can solve the problem using another method as follow:

From the free body diagram of the water block, the summition of forces in the x-
direction is:
To calculate , the summition of forces in the y-
direction is
