Experiment 5: Variable Speed

Centrifugal Pump Characteristics

Section: 1
B.N: 18
Introduction:
The importance of water to the community
makes it necessary to measure the discharge in
streams and rivers. Any project involving the use
of water resources must have precise flow data.

Numerous flow measurement devices have been

created, all of which are based on the critical
flow principle. In these devices, the critical depth
is typically produced by either building a weir,
which is a hump on the channel bottom, or by
creating a critical flow flume, which is a
contraction in the cross section.

Objective :
To measure the flow rate in an open channel
using different open channel structures.

Experimental Procedure:
1- Each case's discharge is determined using the following
formula:

𝑄 = ∆𝑉/∆𝑡
2- We use the following formula to determine the system's initial
power:

𝑃 = 𝑉𝐼
3- The following formula is used to determine the operating
head (Hp):

𝐻𝑝 = 𝐻𝑑 − 𝐻𝑠
4- We calculate the water power that comes out of the
system by the following equation:

𝑊𝑃 = 𝛾𝑄𝐻𝑝
5- We set the needed graphs to compare and notices the
differences between the different cases.

Equipment and Instruments:

- Sensors and observation equipment to

measure and set the data used in our
calculations
- A pump and a system of pipe line
