Assignment 2 CPE656 CPS 20242 version 2
Semester: 20242
Lecturer Ir. Ts. Mohd Fadhil Majnis
Credit Hours 3
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This assignment utilizes a problem-based learning approach related to the petroleum refinery's process
flow, unit operations, technology, and health and safety issues. This assignment is motivated by
understanding the characteristics of crude oil, refinery technology and the health and safety aspects that
should be considered in the petroleum refinery's design and operation.
2.0 COURSE AND PROGRAMME OUTCOMES WITH COMPLEX ENGINEERING PROBLEMS &
KNOWLEDGE PROFILE
This assignment addresses two (2) course outcomes and one (1) programme outcome (PO), which are
mapped to complex engineering problem characteristics (WP) and the required knowledge profiles (WK),
as shown in Table 1.

4.0 DESCRIPTION
Crude oil assay is a critical step in the petroleum refining business that thoroughly evaluates crude oil
feedstock chemical composition and physical qualities. Understanding these properties is crucial in
designing efficient and optimized petroleum refinery processes. By analyzing the chemical composition and
physical properties of crude oil, engineers can make informed decisions regarding the selection of refining
processes, equipment, and operating conditions while ensuring compliance with environmental and safety
standards. Crude oil assay data serves as the foundation for petroleum refinery design, enabling engineers
to develop tailored solutions that maximize product yields, quality, and operational efficiency. Table 1
depicts the available crude oil assays that provide critical insights into the molecular structure, sulfur
content, API gravity, viscosity, and other essential characteristics of crude oil.
(a) Illustrate a complete process flow of a crude refinery by considering the crude oil assay listed in
Table 1 (based on your group) with a clear justification of refinery objective(s). The process flow
must consist of five process categories: (i) crude processing, (ii) treatment process, (iii) cracking
process, (iv) combination process, and (v) blending process in the form of a block flow diagram.
(10 marks)
(b) Based on Task (a), develop a process flow of a unit operation using a complete label process flow
diagram (PFD). The PFD should use the appropriate standard symbols. Table 2 shows the unit
operation assigned for each group.
(10 marks)
(c) Explain the suitability of the unit operation (Task (b)) in your proposed crude refinery in terms of
cost, relevant role of stakeholders, safety, and health aspects.
(10 marks)
(d) Recommend a technology (in terms of equipment design, reactor design, retrofitted design, or
process system, etc.) that can enhance the performance of your unit operation. You may include
any appropriate diagram.
(10 marks)
(e) A progress presentation for Task (a) will be held on Week 10 or 11.
(f) This assignment should not exceed 15 pages.
(a) This assignment is a group assignment of 4 - 5 students. The assignment should be submitted only
by the group leader in hardcopy and softcopy to the given link:
https://forms.gle/Tdu7aFCTvywi2Z2T6
(b) Use the following file name for the softcopy submission: Group No.X_EH2438A/B_CPE656_20242
(c) Plagiarism is not allowed, and PENALTY will be given to those involved.
(d) Late submissions will not be entertained and will be considered no submissions.
(g) The final page of the assignment must include a list of references and the marking rubric.
