STATEMENT 2022
Introduction
IOGP is the global voice of the oil and gas industry, pioneering excellence in safe,
efficient and sustainable energy supply - an enabling partner for a low carbon future.
The Safety Committee is accountable for a wide scope of safety related activities and
sets the tone and direction for safety efforts in our global industry.
Project Safira, initiated in 2017, aimed to eliminate fatalities in our industry through work in four focus areas:
land transport, helicopter transport, process safety and standardization and application of the IOGP Life-Saving
Rules. Since Project Safira’s inception, there has been significant progress in reducing fatalities through the
development and effective application of Member resources, the development of practical tools and guides, and
the building of alliances with other industry bodies. But, as our data shows, fatal events, however reduced their
number, continue to occur, and therefore the Safety Committee felt it was time for a refocused direction.
The Committee convened a workshop to set a refreshed course for the next five years. This position statement
is intended to inform IOGP Members and other industry stakeholders of the output of that workshop to build
alignment and common purpose towards realizing our shared strategic objectives.
The Safety Committee delivers most of its output via workgroups under its Subcommittees, and by setting up
Task Forces to deliver ad-hoc work. The diagram below illustrates the current range of efforts:

The workshop focused its efforts on addressing and identifying impactful opportunities in three areas of
upstream safety: personal safety, process safety, and transport safety. Throughout each area, the participants
were requested to maintain a focus on human performance opportunities.
For the Safety Committee’s new focus areas, the following activities were defined:

Industry collaboration and shared direction
IOGP will continue to be guided by Project Safira’s goal of eliminating fatalities. We also believe environmental
stewardship is a shared imperative across our industry. We will therefore:
• Seek to engage other global trade associations, regulators, and the industry at large and influence the
industry towards a common direction; we will leverage the reach of others, including national-level
entities, towards that common goal
• Avoid duplication of guidance by maintaining an awareness of existing material and point companies to
sources of relevant material
• Work towards an industry wide CEO-led safety forum to listen and embed the shared direction across the
entire supply chain
We invite readers to take direction from our positions, engage your decision makers, and play your part in
making the industry safer.
