DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE?

Sarah Whitesmith discusses how colour a ects our lives.

We all know that colour can affect our mood. Sitting in a

room painted brown for half an hour can depress us for
the rest of the day! However, the way we react to colours
isn't just in our minds: colour can affect our bodies too. Red
makes our heart beat faster. It doesn't turn us into monsters
but it's easy to see why it is considered to be the colour of
anger. Apparently though, it also increases our appetite;
so if you over open a restaurant, make sure that you
include red somewhere in your colour scheme!

Psychologists agree about the effects of some other

common colours, too. Yellow makes us happy. However, a
lot of yellow can make us feel anxious, so don’t use too
much when decorating your home! Blue apparently calms us down, while green helps
sick people feel better. Orange is warm and friendly. Have you noticed that at parties
guests always seem to go towards people wearing this colour? As for pink, most of us
associate it with romance or little girls, but Surprisingly it is used in some prisons too - in
two different ways. On the one hand pink is said to have a calming effect on violent
behaviour but on the other hand wearing pink prison clothes is supposed to
discourage prisoners from reoffending, they really don't like having to wear pink!

Colour can also affect people’s awareness of the passing of time. In one experiment
people stood in rooms with different kinds of light. Blue light made time pass more
quickly and easily, while red light made time go by more slowly. So, it's probably a
good idea to have blue walls in places where people often have to spend a lot of
time - like in waiting rooms at doctors and dentists!

Perhaps one of the most interesting things about colour in today’s world is its
importance in sport. Statistics show that it can make the difference between winning
and losing! In one experiment, they discovered that goalkeepers felt far less confident
facing a penalty from a red-shirt player than one who was wearing White or blue. Their
explanation is that when we see the colour red it makes us feel anxious but it makes
those who are wearing it feel more confident.

Sometimes, competitors have no choice over the colour they wear. In taekwondo, for
example, competitors are sometimes allocated red, sometimes blue. However, there is
Page 2 of 52
ff
evidence to show that referees usually favour the competitor in red. During the Athens
Olympic games, when the referee had to choose the winners of very close matches,
62 percent of the winners were wearing red. Is it perhaps time to use more neutral
colours in sport?

The effect of colours on our emotions is wide and complex. An understanding of this
can help us in a range of ways - from deciding on a colour scheme for a school or
hospital to choosing what to wear to make us feel different, or influence the people
we meet or work With. Whether it’s important enough to make a big football team
decide to change its traditional team colours - well, that's another question!
Somehow, I rather doubt it!

Complete the following chart with the positive and negative connotations of each
colour.

Positive Negative

Red
Brown

READING 1. HEALTHY HABITS.

1) Video games that contain a high level of

action can actually improve your sight.
Researchers at the University of Rochester have
shown that people who played action video
games for a few hours a day over the course of
a month improved by about 20 per cent in their
ability to do a visual test where they had to
identify letters that were difficult to read. After
just thirty hours, players could see letters and figures like those on an eye chart more
clearly. Action games push the human visual system to the limits and the brain adapts
to it. But it only works if there is a lot of fast action, when the eye has to quickly spot
things happening in all parts of the screen, not just the centre.

2) Living near parks or woodlands can improve people’s health and stop the negative
effects of poverty and bad inner-city conditions. Richard Mitchell and a team from
Glasgow University found that in the greenest parts of the country, the difference in
health between rich and poor people was much smaller than in the least green parts
of the country. One reason for this is that living close to a green space encourages
people to take more exerclse and keep in shape. If you
take more exercise, your heart gets stronger. The
researchers confirmed that for people living near green
areas, there were fewer cases of heart disease. There is
also evidence that just living close to a park or
woodland can reduce blood pressure and stress levels
and may even help you to get over operations faster. If
we had more green spaces, it wouldn’t just make
neighborhoods pretty. It would make a real difference to
people’s health.

3) Eating breakfast may be the key to keeping slim. In a

five-year study of almost 7,000 people, researchers found
that people who ate breakfast regularly put on the least
weight. They consumed more food overall than those
who ate less in the mornings, but they still lost more
weight. Big breakfasts will help you to lose weight as long
as you don't eat fatty foods like bacon, sausages or
cakes with lots of sugar. One reason that big breakfasts help to control your weight is

that if you eat a big breakfast, you will feel full and this should stop you from eating
unhealthy snacks before lunch.

4) Some people are calling the computer game World of Warcraft the world’s
deadliest after a Swedish teenager nearly died after apparently playing for 24 hours
without a break. Doctors said that the fifteen-year-old boy had suffered
convulsions and blacked out as a result of sleep deprivation,
lack of food and trying to concentrate for too long. The
phenomenon of ‘game addiction’ is associated particularly
with MMORPGS - massively multi-player online role
-playing games. World of Warcraft is one of the most
popular examples of this type of game, with more than 11
million people worldwide playing it. Psychiatrists only partly
understand how the addiction to games affects people. The
Swedish teenager’s father is trying to draw attention to the
risks of the game in case the same thing happens to others.

5) Unless you choose your breakfast carefully, you’ll probably find that you have
consumed half your recommended daily intake of salt before the day has really
begun. Most organizations recommend consuming no more than 6g of salt a day. if
you have a full English breakfast. (sausages, bacon, fried egg, toast with butter), you'll
pass the 6g limit immediately. But even a big bowl of breakfast cereal can be much
worse than you think. Some of today’s cereals can contain almost 2g of salt, as well as
40g of sugar. Processed white bread can also contain surprisingly large amounts of
salt. Consuming large amounts of salt is dangerous because it increases blood
pressure and the risk of a heart attack.

6) A researcher has claimed that half the population could be suffering from hay fever
by 2060. Hay fever is the name we give to an allergic reaction to pollen, one of the
most common allergies in the UK. Many teenagers suffer, and the worst period is
usually just when they have their final exams. Experts recommend avoiding parks and
woodland at this time of the Year, especially between 7am and 10am or 4pm and
7pm because this is when there is most pollen in the air. They
also suggest combining the avoidance of pollen with
medical treatment. Unfortunately, although it is effective, a
lot of the medicine makes patients sleepy, which is not ideal
in the exam period. An alternative is a course of injections to
increase the patient’s tolerance to pollen. However, this can
be expensive and it can take a lot of injections to relieve the patient’s symptoms.

THE SECRETS OF TRUE HAPPINESS

Lillie Barr reviews some recent research

A happy nature is a gift we all wish we’d been born with. Everybody knows someone
with this gift: the cheerful type of person with a positive attitude who will always say a
glass is half full rather than half empty. It’s the person who is not easily put off when
things go wrong and who appears to lead a happier life as a result. Such people may
be healthier too, since there seems to be a link between happiness and good health.
But what is the secret of happiness? And how can we achieve it?

Psychologists define this feeling of well-being as ‘when thoughts and feelings about
one’s life are mainly positive’.The key seems to be contentment with what you already
have, emotionally, materially and professionally. The more people try to keep up with
others, for example, the more likely they are to be dissatisfied with life. 1..............

David Lykken, Professor of Psychology at the University of Minnesota, is a leading

specialist in happiness. As a result of studying 300 sets of twins, he now believes that
happiness is more than 50 per cent genetically determined. He also believes that we
each have our own fixed ‘happiness point’, a level we always return to, whatever
happens to us in life. 2................

But does this mean we are stuck with the level of happiness we were born with? Dr
Michael Isaac, a psychiatrist, believes this is not necessarily the case. This is because
although a person’s temperament is not easily changed, their character can be. The
former determines what kind of things will make someone happy, but not how much
pleasure that person obtains from them. 3...............This is why Dr Isaac believes we
need to study happy people and learn how to be like them.

4..................They also tend to be interested in things other than themselves. This could

be through their day-to-day work, for example, or by caring for others less fortunate, or
by having some kind of spiritual focus to their life.

Happy individuals also tend-to relate to other people and are able to give and
receive affection. 5................They are, therefore, more likely to belong to things like
sports teams, choirs and political parties. Researchers at Harvard University have found
that people involved in such activities were happier than those who were not, and
that this had nothing to do with how well-off people were financially.

Another factor in happiness appears to be physical activity. Exercise improves a
person’s mood and gets rid of tension. But there must be a balance between activity
and rest, because stress results in unhappiness. 6.................

But mental activity can be just as important. Psychologists believe it’s possible to train
yourself to recognise happiness and, therefore, feel the benefits of it more often.
7............ One way of doing this is to set yourself the task of noticing, say, five different
happy moments in the day. The more you recognise when there’s a decision to be
made about how you feel, the better you’ll become at choosing happiness over
misery, it is claimed.

Seven sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences
A-H the one which ts each gap (1-7). There is one extra sentence, which you do not
need to use.

A. That’s why being part of a social group, such as a family, a community or a club
adds to their overall sense of well-being.
B. Such people, for example, seem to find satisfaction in activities which are
meaningful and give a feeling of personal achievement.
C. The latter develops in response to the experiences a person has during his or her
life.
D. There will always be someone else with more than you, so trying to compete can
often lead to frustration and anxiety.
E. To avoid this, it is important to pick a sport or activity you enjoy and which you do
when you want to, rather than when you think you should.
F. In other words, no matter how happy or unhappy an individual event may make
us, this is just a temporary state.
G. The key, apparently, is not taking your feelings for granted, but rather learning to
celebrate them.
H. Other scientists, however, maintain that happiness is not so difficult to achieve.

TIP: Match the sentences you are sure about to the gaps and skip the ones you are not sure
about. Go back and do them at the end. Having fewer options to choose from is easier.

READING

USAIN BOLT: FAST AND LOOSE.

When Usain Bolt was a young boy growing up in Jamaica, his parents took him to the
doctor because he couldn’t keep still. He was gifted at cricket, his first love. ‘But I just
happened to run fast. They said, try track and field, and I continued because it was
easy and I was winning. And my dad said I should concentrate on running because
it’s an individual sport and, if you do good, you do good for yourself.’

Nobody can hold a light to Usain Bolt —

he is a one-off. There's the size, for a
start: 1.96 metres. (ideal sprinters are
thought to be no more than 1.85
metres) Then there’s the scoliosis, a
curved spine which means one leg is
shorter than the other. 1……….. And the
attitude .— at warm-up his rivals look as
if they will explode with tension, but Bolt
smiles, even dances. And, of course, Bolt is said to be the fastest man ever , although
he wasn’t even giving his all when he broke the 100 and 200 meter records.

Bolt maintains that he isn’t quite as cool and laid-back as he appears to be. There are
things that bother him. 2……….. For example, he says he was so uptight before the
Junior World 'Championships final — where he became the youngest gold medallist at
the age of fifteen — that he put his shoes on the wrong feet. ‘I’ve never been so
nervous in my whole life. I was shaking because everyone was expecting me to get a
medal’

3……….. That’s when Jamaica turned on him. His own people said he was
undisciplined, he partied too much. And yes, he did; but the truth was he was suffering
with his spine. People, he says, are quick to criticise. Even now, say I‘m always
partying. Well, I do party. I work hard and I’m going to enjoy myself. I’m not going to
let people hold me back. That’s when the stress comes in and when you get stressed
you start to lose it.’

Bolt arrived in athletics at a time when the profession had lost a lot of respect over
drug-taking. Here was a man who looked and acted differently. In 2008, though, he

had to beg his coach to let him run the 100 metres at the Beijing Olympics. 4………..
Despite that, not only did he win gold but he broke the 100 metre world record.

“He can break his own record if he tries. ‘He’s lazy” says his manager. ‘But when he
trains, he trains very hard. The image on the track is that he just turns up and runs but it
isn’t true. He’s very competitive. And the thing is, says Bolt, if he weren’t easy-going, he
wouldn’t run so fast. 5……….. ‘If you’re tense, you’ll make mistakes.’ He looks a little
blank when I ask him what makes him such a good runner. Perhaps his height helps,
and those huge strides, he suggests. 6……….. ‘The way his feet move, the way the
mechanics are so perfect. And the strength he can generate from his hips and his
hamstrings, everything is perfect for running.’

I’ve never met a sportsman quite like Bolt. While so many are uncommunicative,
conventional and self-important, he is opinionated, funny and grounded. I ask him
about his ambitions. Eventually, he says, he’d like to make a go of playing football
professionally. 7……….. ‘People say I’m a legend but I’m not until I’ve fulfilled my
potential.’

Seven sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A—H the
one which ts each gap 1-7.There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use.

A. It took a lot of persuasion because Bolt had been running the distance for less than a
year and was surviving on a diet of junk food.
B. But before that he has more to achieve on the track.
C. This condition should have made it impossible for him to have a career in sport.
D. I ask him what's it like to run so fast, to race the wind.
E. "I try not to let them, but they do."
F. Having fun on the track helps him to relax.
G. His manager says he runs like a cheetah.
H. Winning that race changed his whole life, but for much of the next three years he was
injured.
