Different Speaking Styles:
Formal Speaking Styles
Formal Speaking Style

• As name suggests, Formal speaking follows some


codes of conduct or rules.

• This speaking style is useful in official


communications, seminars, workshops, academics
and other formal setups.

• This requires careful selection of words and


sentences.
Informal Speaking Styles
Informal Speaking Style

• Anything which is not formal is informal. Hence,


informal communication style is an umbrella term for
various speaking styles which do not follow codes of
conduct or rules.

• Personal communication, communication during


casual social events and functions, communication
among friends, relatives and family members etc. all
come under the category of informal speaking style.

Personal Speaking Style

• Very much personal and informal in nature.

• Generally, occurs among family members, close


friends and relatives.

• Personal speaking style is the most natural type of


speaking style.

• Examples include husband speaking to wife, parents


speaking to kids etc.
Ceremonial Speaking Styles
Ceremonial Speaking Style

• As name suggests, such speaking style is generally


limited to ceremonies, festivals, parties, functions
etc.

• This speaking style is very much like the public


speaking style where one needs to speak Infront of a
large audience.

• Focused on the theme of the event.

• Examples include raising a toast, eulogy or award


ceremony speech.
Informative Speaking Styles
Informative Speaking Style

• This style is used to convey or deliver information.

• The major focus in this speaking style is on making


the content easy to grasp and understand.

• Speaking style used in teaching, presentation, news


reading etc. are some of the examples of informative
speaking style.
Inquisitive Speaking Styles
Inquisitive Speaking Style

• The major goal of this speaking style is to inquire or


ask questions.

• When a student asks questions from his teacher,


interviewer interviews a candidate, an anchor
interviews celebrity or political leaders etc. are some
of the examples where inquisitive speaking style is
used.
Negotiative Speaking Styles
Negotiative Speaking Style

• When two parties communicate with each other to


reach a common ground or settle on common terms,
Negotiative speaking style is use.

• Such style is used between employers and


employees, sellers and buyers, service providers and
clients etc.
Consultative Speaking Styles
Consultative Speaking Style

• As name suggests, Consultative speaking style is


used in consulting.

• Doctors, advocates, experts, veterans, and


professionals use this speaking style in providing
consultancies to their clients.
Instructive Speaking Styles
Instructive Speaking Style

• Instructive speaking style is used while instructing


somebody to do or to learn something.

• The sender in communication delivers the


instructions while the receiver receives them.

• Major examples of instructive speaking style are


Teacher teaching students, Mentors or coaches
mentoring their disciples etc.
Complimenting Speaking Styles
Complimenting Speaking Style

• As the name suggests, this speaking style is used


particularly in case of appreciating or complimenting
somebody.

• The major premise here is giving feedback.

• If the feedback given is negative in nature, the


emerging speaking style is called complaining
speaking style.

• A teacher commending his students for their good


work is an example of such speaking style.
Persuasive Speaking Styles
Persuasive Speaking Style

• This speaking style is used when the objective is to


persuade somebody to do something the speaker
wishes.

• This speaking style is very important and extensively


used in sales pitches, presentations, marketing and
promotions.

• Candidates competing in shark tank by presenting


their startup ideas is an example of persuasive
speaking style.
Motivational Speaking Styles
Motivational/ Inspirational Speaking Style

• This speaking style is specially used by motivational


speakers with an objective to motivate and inspire
audience to take an action.

• An example of motivational speaking style is Sandeep


Maheshwari's talks and speeches.
