CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

The student’s industrial work experience scheme [SIWES] is a mandatory training for all student’s

of higher institution of learning to put in practice the theoretical aspect of what they have learned

before graduation .The programmer is mainly designed to prepare student’s towards the challenges

they will meet future when given the opportunity to work .

It is aimed at exposing students to machines an equipment, professional methods and ways of

safeguarding the work areas and industries.

SIWES was established in the year 1973/1974 and was introduced to acquaint student with the skills

of handing employers. The industrial training fund (ITF) solely founded the scheme during it

formation years. But as the financial involvement becomes unbearable to them, it withdraws from the

scheme in 1979 to both the national University commission (NUC) and the National Board for

technological education (NBTE).

Later the federal government in November 1984 inverted the management and implementation of the

SIWES programme to the ITF again, and it was effectively taken over by ITF in July 1985 with the

funding solely borne by the federal government of Nigeria.

SIWES (Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme) is a scheme for the duration f sixteen weeks (

4 month) for polytechnics and twenty four weeks (6 months) for universities. It is usually done in the

first year (NDI) in the polytechnic and in the third year in the universities depending on the

institutions.

The effective management of student’s industrial Work Experience Scheme has been as a result of the

cooperation and well played roles of the federal government. IFT and Supervising agencies.
ROLES OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

Federal government being the major party in the establishment of SIWES, has ever since been

involved in the management of SIWES some of the roles played are:

i. To make it mandatory for all ministries, companies and parastatals to offer places of

attachment for students in accordance with the provision of Decree no 47 of 1971 as

amended in 1990.

ii. To provide necessary and adequate funds to ITF through the federal ministries of

Industries.

1.1 ROLES OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING FUND (ITF)

i. Provide logistics and materials needed to administer the scheme

ii. Supervise students through its Area Offices.

1.2 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

i. to prepare student for their industrial work and situations they will meet after graduation.

ii. For the student to acquire the theoretical aspect of what they learnt in the class room and

put them into practice.

iii. SIWES build student moral and standard in order to fit in the modern technology and

equipment installed in the world organization today.

iv. If the students are practically involved in the scheme, the journey of their academic is said

to be complete, if not it will be half way done.

v. It also discipline students and helps them to gain experience and ensure peaceful

coexistence in real life involving practical in their programmes.


1.3. ACHIEVEMENTS RECORDED BY THE SCHEME

The technical reports on SIWES so far have shown the programme is indeed a means of

practicalizing all works done or learnt during the student’s theoretical aspect of their course of

study. And some of the achievements recorded by the scheme are as follows:

1. The scheme has helped the students in performing well after their course of study as they

experience what is written practically in the class room.

2. The scheme has also recorded success on how to maintain peace and human relation among

students of various institutions.

3. Student acquires vocational and desirable habit for work which is essential to any successful

occupation.

CHAPTER TWO

2.0 RESUMPTION AND OREINTATION

I was introduced to the department and various staff that I would be working with or reporting to.

Schedules of attendance, rules and regulations as well as my duties were outlined to me.

This chapter outlines all the activities that were carried out as well as the orientation/lectures had

in the course of the four months of training.

We were introduced to the staff of the organization and the various departments.

1. Orientation about the various safety equipment used in the department are as follows:

2.3 PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

Despite the intense and interesting learning experience, I was faced with some challenges as follows:

1. Transportation from my home to the place of Industrial attachment.

2. Students were not given total access to some important information.

3.0 SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

3.1 SUMMARY

It is true that student industrial work experience scheme has been a tremendous help to

students and has recorded a great deal of man power development that led to the greater productivity

in both private and public sector of the nation’s economy.

This evidence shows that, the programme has helped the student with needed experience with they

are likely to faces after graduation. The industrial work attachment has created a lot of impact in the

area of boosting the knowledge and working experience for every student that undergo this exercise

before the program.

3.2 CONCLUSION

My experience during the past four month has indeed been stressful and challenging but I have in the

process become better in my field of study than before. I learnt a lot from the staff and other students

of the department in general.

3.3 RECOMMENDATION

It is however recommended that:

i. More provisions should be made towards the support of internship of students.

ii. The institution should confirm that each student partakes in the industrial training program

by making sure that they pay every student a visit before the end of the programme.
