Explanation
DEFINITION
The definition may be stated
directly as “a/the … is …”, or by using
other words which tell you that the
term is about to be defined.

"The effort to completely get rid of


people by killing them is called
annihilation."
EXAMPLE
"Sharifah is very affluent. She drives
an imported sports car and wears
expensive clothes and jewellery. She
also lives in a huge house."

All the examples – 'sports car',


'expensive' and 'huge house' –
suggest wealth. We can
therefore guess that the word
affluent means wealthy.
EXAMPLE
"Salina is such an amicable person.
For example, she is friendly with
everyone in school and she never
argues with anyone. "

In the above sentence, the


examples given are:
1. She is friendly with everyone.
2. She never argues with
anyone.
EXPLANATION
In some instances an
explanation of the word is
given. By analysing the
explanation, you can get
enough information to help
you picture in your mind
what the term means.
EXPLANATION
"A lot of universities nowadays are
introducing the Flexi-Learning
Programme. This programme is a form
of self-education because the student
is in charge of his own learning. He has
to gather information on his own rather
than obtain it in a formal classroom. He
has to discipline himself to keep up with
his studies. "
